After watching these two short clips- consider this information not shared by the media:

The suspect I arrested was 17 years old in 2019. He committed the rape just before his 14th birthday. From 2015-2019 while I prayed for a DNA match he was arrested numerous times for violent crimes and gang participation. The DNA we got that linked him to the rape was from a gun arrest! Because he was 13 at the time of the rape, family court took this case. He was released from the court room hours after the arrest and hours before I was done with my paperwork. He has not spent one day behind bars. Since I arrested him in August of 2019- he has committed more violent crimes, but still is covered under Raise the Age, as he is only 18 now.

The victim who was 12 when she was raped is now 17. This boy took away her innocence, something she can never get back. She has spent years in therapy and will forever struggle with this traumatic crime. She has struggled with her self identity, in school, and with living in fear. For years she prayed we would solve the case to bring her justice- the outcome that he walked free is heart breaking. Justice and closure did not go hand in hand.

For your initial post these are your 3 questions to answer (it’s opinion based, but back up your responses- no need to use citations or reference section):

Consider the perspective of the victim, the criminal justice system, and the perpetrator. What are your reactions to this case?

Have your thoughts on Raise the Age changed? Do you think Raise the Age should be revised in any manner?

Should we incarcerate violent juvenile offenders for long periods of time—10 years or more? Are there any exceptions to this?
*Feel free to ask me any additional questions as well*

In your response posts: Lets have some FRIENDLY, RESPECTFUL DEBATES! Find someone (at least 2 classmates) who does not share your same perspective. Support your stance using sources (textbook, or news stories)- make sure you have included in text-citations and reference section to meet the standards of valuable response posts. Check back to your original thread to ensuring you are responding to follow up questions or concerns.
