Read pages 44-59 and answer questions below.
1) Pryor argues that while the 1840s witnessed a “transportation revolution,” it was also “the dawn of the age of segregation.” Segregation depended on the *process* of criminalizing black life. (Remember, race is the product of the act of racism). Using examples from the text, describe the process of black criminalization and its meaning for both black (free or enslaved) and white Americans in a changing nation.
2) Pryor analyzes runaway slave ads that were ubiquitously published in newspapers by the 1830s/1840s. She describes them as the visual representation of black mobility criminalized. She uses terms like “standardized” and “fungible” (51,52). How does Pryor use this to talk about the gendered experience of travel for black people? (Remember, gender is about men and women and everything in between).
3) Come up with **one** discussion question based on the reading. It could be about something from the text, about the primary sources she used, or about the larger implications of Pryor’s work. Try to make it a “why” or a “how” question, as opposed to a “what.”
