Case Study: Alliance Ntakwinja (Democratic Republic of Congo)
A 22-year-old married woman with two children living in the Democratic Republic of Congo revealed that she was raped by four men who came to her house. Her husband was home, and they took him outside and tied him to a tree. Later, she was taken to a local hospital, where she spent three weeks recovering from her injuries. Other women who were in the same hospital ward had also been raped, with subsequent injuries. An organization called Women to Women funded by Soroptimist International later contacted her, and she was able to get job training making soap, which financially helps her entire family. This organization helps women survivors rebuild their lives and is committed to ending violence against women and girls by raising awareness about violence against women and advocating for governments to be accountable and responsible for protecting women and girls. This organization gives refuge, protection, and rehabilitation for women who have experienced violence, which includes safe housing and mental health care.
