Getting Started
Before you start, click the button on the top right corner of this assignment window with the three vertical dots and click “Show Rubric”. This is the rubric that will be used to grade your assignment so be sure to address all of the required components. Note that the different criteria have different values attached to each. You will be creating at least three discussion forum posts: your primary post discussing how theory is connected to the different sides of the argument on your issue, and at least one reply to at least two of your classmates.
What to do:
Apply theory to the conflicting arguments on your controversy. Using the theoretical perspectives you identified in Forum 1, or corrections from the instructor feedback, break down the controversy surrounding your chosen issue and apply theory to them. This is a modified pro/con assignment. Take each position and explain in good faith the positions of those who are on all opposing sides of the controversy. Pretend you have just interviewed a person who is a strong supporter of your issue. What arguments did they use to justify their position? Now pretend that you have interviewed a person who is strongly against your issue. What arguments did they use to justify their opposing position? Flesh out both of these sets of arguments and identify the theoretical perspective school of thought being used by each.
Identify the theoretical perspectives (social- race- gender- conflict theory, structural-functionalism, and symbolic-interactionism) connected to all of the opposing positions and explain the theoretical connections. Refer to section 1.3 (Links to an external site.) of the textbook for initial guidance. Additional information can be found in the textbook chapter that your controversial issue “belongs” to according to the sign-up sheet and the course instructional videos.
Set your personal opinion aside for now. The phrases “I think”, “In my opinion”, etc. should not be present at all in this post.
List at least two sources that you used to research the controversy in MLA format at the end of the discussion post. You should have at least one source for each side of the argument.
Next, choose at least two classmates discussion post from a different unit than your own and not the same from Discussion Forum 1. Respond to their post by supporting one of the positions you agree with. Explain why you think the way you do and support with the theoretical approach(es) your own thinking is grounded in.
Technical Requirements:
Primary response must be at least 500 words and classmate responses must be at least 200 words each to qualify for grading. You must write at least three total posts to receive a grade. You will be able to see your classmates’ posts once you post your own primary post. Do not create any post before your primary post as your first post is the one that will be graded as the primary post. College-level writing, spelling, and grammar are expected.
The subject of your created thread should be the controversial issue. For example I would create a thread with the subject “Death Penalty” if that was my chosen issue.
