Your post should be a minimum of 150 words. Identify a couple of different types of rhetorical methods Barber uses. Don’t use vague terms, like logos, or examples. Be precise enough that you are describing his essay and not arguments in general. In other words, if he uses a hypothetical example, describe his specific example and not hypotheticals in general.
What is his thesis? A thesis is the main point, not the topic. It often identifies a problem and provides a solution. To help you figure out what his thesis is, it is often useful to breakdown his essay into parts, and think about how the parts work together to express and support a central idea.
Note: This article was written almost thirty years ago, yet our educational system seems worse now than it was then. Barber’s concern for the role education plays in a functioning democracy seems more important now than it ever has before. When significant parts of our population lack basic critical thinking skills, and struggle to separate truth from fiction, the public interest faces serious threats.
