An IRAC summary.

Please read this Supreme Court decision in the files and write an IRAC summary. IRAC = Issue + Rule + Analysis + Conclusion

What is IRAC?
-IRAC stands for issue, rule, analysis, and conclusion. An IRAC is a standard formula you can
follow when you “brief” a case. A “brief” is a short summary and analysis of the case. A well-
crafted IRAC helps a reader understand the people involved as parties, the issues presented
before the court, the court’s analysis, and the final conclusion.

How to IRAC?
IRAC should be organized in the following manner:
1. Case name
2. Case citation : This is how a case is referenced. A citation should include the name of the case, the date
it was decided, and the court that decided it
3. Justice or judge who wrote the opinion : This name is found at the beginning of all case opinions.
4. Facts : Begin the IRAC with a few sentences of the relevant facts. The facts should explain the
reasons for the lawsuit and a short explanation of the parties’ arguments.
5. Issue : State the question or problem the court is trying to answer.
6. Rule : State the statute or legal, principle that the court relied on for its decision.
7. Analysis : State the reasons given by the court for its decision.
8. Conclusion : State the decision ruled by the court. This should answer the issue stated in 5 above.
