Genre Analysis Research Report
Introduction: This quarter we have discussed the writing process, analyzed rhetorical situations, and employed rhetorical moves to successfully write in different genres for different purposes. You have examined yourself as a college (and future) writer and made an argument about where you stand in relation to Pigg’s study on college writers. You have also read about and used specific rhetorical moves to successfully write a personal statement—an important genre for your future. This assignment asks you to look ahead to the types of writing you may be asked to do in your chosen future career or discipline.
Purpose: The primary purpose of this assignment is to help you learn about the writing practices in a profession or discipline that you may be joining in the future and to analyze those findings in light of both course concepts we’ve discussed already and some secondary research you will conduct. What do you want to investigate about the kinds of writing/ writing situations these professionals do / face? What audiences do they write to? For what purpose? In what ways? Under what circumstances? What unfamiliar genres may you need to learn as you enter this field? You will conduct and integrate both primary and secondary research about writing in the field in your report. The most effective papers will analyze how the findings from your primary research (interview and actual genres/types of writing people in your chosen field do) shed light on/complicate/contradict/reinforce what your secondary research has told you about writing in that profession/field.
Audience: Write to an educated, yet uninformed, audience. You are educating them about the writing practices in the field.
For example:
— A UC Davis sophomore considering majoring in your discipline or planning a career in the profession.
— Another novice researcher who is interested in conducting future writing research in the discipline or profession.
Writing Tasks: This assignment requires you to conduct both primary and secondary research on writing practices in a discipline or profession. You can choose a profession or discipline you plan to work in after graduation, or simply choose the one you are curious about. This assignment has three components:
1. An Annotated Bibliography (see handout)
2. Report:
1. Your report should have the following sections:
· Title: Specific and catchy; indicates the topic of your report
· Introduction: Introduces readers to your profession, including what is known about writing in that profession from secondary sources you’ve uncovered. Explains why your study is needed and leads to your research question(s).
· Methods: Describes how you conducted your primary research (interview and sample genres you decided on)
· Results: Provides your results/findings from the primary research; includes effective visuals (usually tables/graphs) as needed
· Discussion: Analyzes your findings in light of course concepts and secondary research. Relates back to your research question. Clarifies what you learned.
· References (all primary and secondary sources used in APA format)
· Appendix: Include genre samples and interview questions & answers (optional) that you collected
Evidence: You will use several types of evidence in this report. Evidence will include secondary sources on writing in the field, and primary sources such as information from your interview and genre samples. To integrate this material into your report, you will need to summarize, paraphrase, and/or quote from your research.
Analysis: You have several options on how to analyze your findings. The point of the Discussion section is to tell your readers why the Results matter / how you make sense of them in relation to course concepts/ what we know about writing in that profession or discipline. How you do this will depend on what your topic is/ what you wanted to find out, and what you found out. You should organize your Discussion section in a way that flows logically and that expands upon the Research Question that you generated at the start of the writing process. In your Discussion, you may choose to:
· Analyze how someone in the profession utilizes/moves through the writing process
· Analyze how someone in the profession utilizes rhetorical concepts that we have learned this quarter: rhetorical situation, genre, rhetorical moves
· Analyze your evidence is based on the secondary research you conducted
· Analyze the “moves” of the genre samples that you collected
Sources: Your report must make use of a combination of 2 primaries (interview of someone in the profession and genre samples–more is usually better, if possible) and 4 secondary sources. Secondary sources include research articles, books, or other sources that deal with the topic of writing in your profession. You must have 2 scholarly, peer-reviewed sources. Your other 2 secondary sources can be an article we read for our class, a newspaper article, or some other kind of credible source.

Length: 1750 words (report) + 600 words (annotated bibliography)= ~ 2,350 words total
APA Format (in text citations and References page)
Visuals: Must include at least one original visual (chart, graph, etc.), likely in the Results section.
In addition, I made up the interview questions but I can not find the genre sample. ( 2 primaries interviews of someone in the profession and genre samples). Please find a genre sample for me. Also, I will upload two peer reviews from my classmates to help you rewrite my essay.
