In the history of colonial American history (otherwise known as colonial American historiography), there have been several different “schools” or approaches to the subject of colonial America, including the Nationalists, the Imperial School, the Progressives, the New Social History, and the Atlantic World approach (among others). Each school or approach has made contributions to our understanding of America’s colonial past, but each has done so through a particular perspective. By definition, a particular perspective on any subject carries with it an agenda and a set of biases. Analyze what agendas and biases are at work in each of the aforementioned five “schools” or approaches to the study of colonial America.
