Grade:
Your report will be graded in a 0-100 point scale based on the following criteria:
Content (0-70 points): Do you address the topic or question for this assignment? Do you fully
comprehend and understand your reading? Do you provide textual evidence to support your
analysis?
Structure and Organization (0-20 points): Is your paper logically organized? Do you develop
your main argument? Do you provide supporting evidence?
Style (0-10 points): Are you sure your paper does not contain misspellings, grammatical
mistakes or incomplete sentences? Do you use correct punctuation? Do you cite references
correctly?
Reading Report #1
Objective: The purpose of these reports is to practice your close reading skills, and for you to
evaluate textual evidence (text, audio or film) based on interpretation. You should demonstrate
that you closely read the primary material, and that you are able to identify significant themes.
Task:
1. Choose one of the primary sources that we have been discussing in class:
a. Veronica
b. “Santi”
c. “A Truthful Letter…”
d. “The Spirits’ Mountain”
e. Cronos
f. “The Decapitated Chicken”
2. Type your report. You must:
a. Contextualize the primary source: author/director, publishing date, place.
b. Contextualize the story (where and when is set, and who are the main characters).
Briefly summarize the plot.
c. Identify one or two themes and explain how these themes work in a successful
horror/fantasy story.
d. You may support your analysis with a secondary source (scholarly paper).
i. You are strongly encouraged to use resources available through our
library.
ii. Don’t forget to cite your sources following the MLA guidelines.
3. Your report must be 2-4 pages long, typed in Times New Roman #12 and double-spaced.

4. Submit your report by uploading your file in Canvas > Assignments > Reports
