Ancient Greek & Roman Concepts

Choose two concepts from the document provided titled Greek & Roman Concepts to discuss in connection with examples of those concepts from ancient Greek or Roman literature or art (you may choose one concept from each listGreek and Romanor both concepts from the same list).
Analyze each concept in relation to the concrete example you have chosen to illustrate the concept (e.g., a quote from Homer’s Iliad involving Achilles may exemplify the concept arete). Each section (total of two) must include (at least) one concrete example illustrating its concept. One of these examples must be a direct statement from primary literature of the period (e.g., epic poetry, plays, history, philosophy). The other may be taken from visual art or architecture of the period, or may also be from a literary source. Write your paper in MLA format, using in-text citations to name your sources (see also the MLA Format Template provided).
Each section should be c. 250-350 original words (500-700 words total)
Essay graded out of: 50 points
Your paper must include:
A Bibliography or Works Cited
An original title
A clearly stated thesis, highlighted or in bold, for each section
Note: Do not use any repetition of your material from previous writing assignments in the course.
Organize your essay in the following format:
Your essay should have two clearly demarcated sections, one for each concept. Begin each section with a clear thesis. E.g., The concept of arete (in the sense of martial excellence) is illustrated in the figure of Achilles in Homer’s Iliad.
In each section, be sure to define the concept in view.
Example from literature:
o Context: Before providing your literary example of the concept, briefly describe the work and explain the context of the quote that you will provide as your example of the concept. (The context of a quote is essentially what is going on in the book at the point the quote is found; you want to provide the relevant surrounding information so that the meaning of the quote is clear.)
o Example: You must use a direct quotation from the work to illustrate/exemplify the concept.
o Interpretation/Connection: Explain the meaning of the quotation and how it illustrates the concept.
Example from visual art
o Description: Give a substantive description of the work of art/architecture (esp. with an eye to how it relates to your concept.
o Interpretation: Interpret the meaning of the piece and what the artist/architect was trying to convey (esp. with an eye toward the concept you think it illustrates). o Connection: explain how the work illustrates or “incarnates” the concept.

Total = 50 points
