Step 1: Choose a Greek sanctuary site where Hera was worshiped extensively. At the end of this week’s lecture, I suggest Agrigento, Paestum, Corinth, Tiryns, Perachora, or Delos, as important cult sites; of these, you will probably find Perachora or Paestum to be the easiest to research. Hera was worshiped at numerous sites throughout the Greek world– you are free to discuss any site except Olympia, Samos, or Argos (as we have already looked at these sites in depth). If you chose a Hera sanctuary for your previous discussion board, please select a different one for this assignment.
Step 2: Write a two-to-three paragraph summary of the site. Your summary might include the history and architectural development of the site, important ritual activities (such as procedure of sacrifice, types of dedications, and/or festivals) known to have taken place there, foundation myths, and/or discussion of who used the site, and why.
This information can be found in numerous handbooks on Greek archaeology, classical mythology, and ancient religion located in the library. One text that is particularly useful is The Princeton Encyclopedia of Classical Sites, Richard Stillwell, ed., Princeton, NJ: Princeton University Press, 1976 [DE59 P7, Art & Arch Library]. This text is available to be searched online at http://www.perseus.tufts.edu/hopper/search?doc=Perseus%3atext%3a1999.04.0006 (Links to an external site.), although the format is not terribly user-friendly, in my opinion. Useful websites for Greek archaeological sites include whc.unesco.org and wikipedia.org,; for mythology, greekmythology.com, theoi.com, and pantheon.org are all helpful.
