Overview
A person’s diet and activity choices can be affected by a wide variety of factors. Some influences may be positive and encouraging, while others can have a negative impact on a person’s body image or self-esteem. We are also bombarded with information about the “best” way to lose weight or get in shape. There are tons of popular weight loss plans available, but how do we know which ones are safe, healthy ways to go about making a lifestyle change?
There are two different parts to this discussion. You are responsible for responding to one of the questions based on your last name, but you are welcome to follow up on any/all of the other topics.
If your last name begins with A-M: Find a weight loss strategy that is popular today and make an educated evaluation of it.
Try to find where this program is advertised and evaluate it in terms of the information we have learned in this class.
Is it a safe, reliable method of losing weight? If not, what is wrong or dangerous about the strategy? Are there any health consequences that may result from high or low intakes of specific nutrients?
Do you know anyone who has tried the strategy? What was their experience?
There are some very odd weight loss methods out there (do some digging and see what you find).
In addition to the really off-the-wall methods that some of you will find, it is perfectly acceptable for some of you to post weight loss/lifestyle change methods that are respected and healthy. The choice is yours.
If your last name begins with N-Z: Address cultural messages and attitudes that may have an impact on food choices, body image, self-esteem and disordered eating.
How do societal factors influence eating behavior and self-image?
What influences are present in the American culture? Are these similar or different from other cultures?
Discuss your opinion regarding this issue. What would you like to see change?

Notes:
There are many options for additional posts in our discussion forum. For example, read over your classmates’ original posts and reply posts. Their posts may lead you to comments or questions, or to a way to build on your original post. Current news articles from the internet or print media are also always welcome in our discussion forum as long as they pertain to nutrition (or the specific topic we are discussing) and include the appropriate citation.
Participate often in discussion – it is the easiest way to get full credit.
See the Schedule and Course Rubrics pages in the Syllabus Module for due dates and grading information.
