this is what needs to be written in the essay please. Is Medea a villain or a victim? (Neither? Both?) Is her rage at all justifiable? Write an essay in which you explore the character’s motivations for her horrific act of revenge.
Possible areas of exploration: Is Jason in any way culpable for Medea’s actions? Is his pain at losing his children convincing?
How might the low status of women in Ancient Greece factor into Medea’s revenge? In addition to being betrayed by Jason she has also been abandoned in a land that is not her own.
There are indications in the play that Medea has some divine blood, making her into a demi-god like Gilgamesh. She is also referred to as a witch, or a sorceress. (This is confirmed by the earlier myth the play is based on). Does making Medea not fully human make her crime seem less awful? After all, audiences are used to the idea of supernatural beings and vengeful Gods acting in ways we would not accept in mere mortals.
Are there elements of xenophobia being criticized in the play? Research the term “barbarian” in relation to Ancient Greece to get a full idea what some Greek citizens might have thought of Medea.
