Welcome to unit 6. Are you the kind of person who needs to go through every channel on the television before selecting the one you want to watch or are you okay stopping at the first program you think you might like? Some people are okay making a quick decision and going with that while others need to run through every option before making a choice. These different decision styles have to do with how individuals use a number of cognitive rules. We will learn about these rules in this unit.
Another cognitive psychology topic being explored this week has to do with problem solving. We solve problems a number of ways. Just like decision making, problem solving takes on a number of strategies and each strategy is susceptible to a number of issues. Think about it like this. You have a problem that you solved in the past and now you are faced with one that is similar but not exactly the same. You may use analogies to solve the problem based on what you learned from solving the first problem. This is a powerful way we solve problems but it also means we are “stuck” in our paradigm. We struggle to solve the problem because the way we solved it in the past is stuck in our minds. Like any strength we have, it comes with weaknesses.
When completing this unit you will complete the following learning objectives:
Comprehend key ideas and theories regarding problem solving, impediments to problem solving, and decision making (CLO1).
Comprehend key ideas and theories regarding reasoning, decision making and cognitive illusions (CL01
