Assignment Overview:
Learning to form arguments in dialogue with your opponent’s arguments is actually crucial to fortifying your own persuasive argument. We’ve already begun to lay the groundwork for this exercise in the previous assignment.
To map out and begin to plan dialogic argument, it’s crucial to list as many arguments as you can for the binary positions and then to figure out which arguments from each position dialogue with each other.
Not all of them do dialogue, but the ones that can be constructed in conversation with the other binary position are ripe ground for growing a Rogerian or conciliatory argument.

In it they took everyone’s favorite subject, legalization of marijuana, and fleshed out the binary position arguments FIRST and then drew connections between the arguments that “talked” or “dialogued” with each other.
So, for example:
The anti-legalization position might argue that marijuana is harmful to your health.
The pro-legalization position might argue that the health benefits of marijuana far outweigh the harm.
These arguments are in dialogue with each other. They’re related. One could form a conciliatory position between them by offering up:
“Marijuana should be legalized only for medical use because while there are many amazing health benefits from using THC, it should be highly regulated in situations where the harm could outweigh the benefits.”
Mapping out as many arguments as possible and finding the points of dialogue is crucial to forming a strong Rogerian argument.
Assignment Directions:
1. Following the example in the Coggle that I shared above, choose an issue that you want to explore. THE ISSUE BEING ( ANIMATED VS LIVE ACTION MOVIES)
2. Map out as many arguments as you possible can for each binary position (8-10 for each position).
3. Then indicate which of those arguments are 1) in dialogue with each other and 2) offer the opportunity for a Rogerian argument.
4.
Finally, identify and explain the three most viable potential conciliatory arguments and tell me why they are viable.
Keep in mind that the Rogerian argument seeks to promote understanding, find a solution, or at least find some kind of common ground between positions.
Assignment Format Options:
1. I would LOVE for you to map out your positions using a visual method. Using the coggle given above or in the uploaded files, as an example.
2. For item #4 above, you should write a few sentences of explanation for each potential conciliatory argument that you identify.
Assignment Deliverables:
. A visual depiction or list of 8-10 arguments for binary position 1
. A visual depiction or list of 8-10 arguments for binary position 2
. A clear indication of which of the arguments are in dialogue with each other (visual or list form)
. An identification of the top 2-3 potential conciliatory arguments from the arguments that are in dialogue with each other
. An explanation (2-3 sentences) for each of the major potential conciliatory arguments that you’ve identified.
