Requirements: This research paper must be 3-4 pages in length. Double spaced, 12 pt, one-inch borders. Times New Roman font.
Titles of art works should be listed in italics. You must include images of the art works you discuss in your paper. You must use 3 sources other than your textbook, and each source must be cited. These papers should NOT be biographies. I am more
concerned about the artwork of each artist. Tell me why your chosen artist, object or culture is important, why do we study this
particular artist or artwork?
These 10 questions are for your benefit and you may use them in your paper if you wish. They do not need to be answered in your
research paper, however, past students have used these questions as a guide to follow as they prepare their papers.
Which art/artist did you choose to research? What media do they use? (paint, clay, photo)
What is the particular style or technique (abstract, realism, non-representational, cartoon) the artist uses in his/her artwork? Why do you believe the artist chose to work in this particular style versus another?
Where / When did the art/artist live? Can you see this displayed in the artwork?
What is the content of the artist work? (war, slavery, equal rights, propaganda, family, religion)
Choose one work of art you would like to discuss in detail. What is the title?
Describe what you see. What formal qualities does the work have? (size, shape, color, materials, composition). Do you recognize any iconography? Could these be symbolic or a metaphor for something else?
Choose three or four words that you think accurately describe what is being communicated by this work.
What are the visual elements / principles of design that are dominate in the composition?
Are there different interpretations among other viewers? Explain.
Do you believe this artwork is successful? Did it properly communicate or explore a specific idea? What do you feel could be changed to improve the visual interest or meaning? Why is this artwork still relevant to today?
