Article Review James

In order to successfully complete this assignment, the student must:
1. Choose ONE of the following articles to read and review:
Graham, Cooper C. “The Kaiser and the Cameraman: W. H. Durborough on the Eastern Front, 1915.” Film History 22, no. 1 (2010): 22-40.
Ramshaw, Sara. “‘He’s my man!’: Lyrics of Innocence and Betrayal in The People v. Billie Holiday.” Canadian Journal of Women & the Law 16, no. 1 (2004): 86-105.
Rosenthal, Nicolas G. “Representing Indians: Native American Actors on Hollywood’s Frontier.” Western Historical Quarterly 36, no. 3 (Autumn 2005): 228-252.
2. Locate your chosen article in the library database:
a. Step 1: From the CTC homepage, click on the “Academics” tab. Locate the Library section and click on “Databases”.
b. Step 2: Under the “A-Z Listing of Databases” link, click on the “Academic Search Complete” link.
c. Step 3: Follow the directions on screen and sign into the online database.
d. Step 4: In the search box, type the title.
e. Step 5: You have the option to read it on screen or to download it. I recommend downloading it as PDFs right away. In the event that there is an unexpected disruption of the databases, you’ll have the reading.
3. Read the article carefully and completely. Take notes on the key points in each section and organize them in the following manner in preparation to write the paper.
a. The first paragraph of your essay: i. What is the author’s primary argument? You should be able to state this in one sentence. Be clear and concise.
ii. Summarize the source material used to defend the argument. Explain what types of sources are used (government documents, letters, military records, newspapers, books, other academic articles, etc.).
iii. To be clear: Source material is found in the bibliographic documentation provided by the author. Depending on your article, this documentation can be found at the end of the article in a “Notes”, “Bibliography”, “References”, or “Works Cited” section. Some authors place this documentation at the bottom of each page. These notes are known as “footnotes.”
b. The second paragraph of your essay: i. Provide a summary of the article’s content. What important people, places, and events are examined?
c. The third paragraph of your essay: i. In your view, what are the article’s strengths? That is, what did the author do well?
d. The fourth paragraph of your essay: i. In your view, what are the article’s weaknesses? That is, what could the author have done better?
4. Write a paper addressing the items listed in #3 above.
5. Review the “Article Review Paper: Guidelines” provided below. These guidelines include content reminders and instructions related to formatting, editing, and submitting the paper.
6. Reminders: (1) Put your name on the paper; (2) Place the bibliographic citation for your chosen article at the top of the first page.
7. Submit your paper by clicking on the “Article Review Paper” submission link below. Attach the document. Click the “Submit” button.
8. Grading. This essay is worth 200 points in your overall course grade. The instructor will award points based on the following:
a. The extent to which your response addresses the items listed in #3 above. [150 pts possible]
b. The extent to which your response reflects proper essay form (complete sentences, well-organized paragraphs, and proper use of style and grammar). [25 pts. possible]
c. The extent to which your essay demonstrates that you carefully read the selected reading. [25 pts. Possible]
9. Student duties and responsibilities. When completing the Article Review Paper, students are on their honor. Do your own work in your own words. Cite sources when necessary. Incidents of cheating or plagiarizing (or helping someone else to engage in these behaviors) will be handled at the discretion of the instructor. Depending on the nature of the infraction, the instructor may do one (or all) of the following:
a. Assign a score of zero on the assignment.
b. Refer the incident to the Dean’s Office with a recommendation of disciplinary action (probation, suspension, or expulsion).
c. Assign a final letter grade of “F” for the course.
