ARTICLE SUMMARY AND CRITIQUE
The goal of this assignment is to show that you can understand, summarize, and critique a research article.
· This assignment should be written in full sentences and paragraph form (no bullet points!)
· Reference in APA format https://owl.purdue.edu/owl/research_and_citation/apa_style/apa_style_introduction.html
· Do not use direct quotes, everything must be written in your own words
What to include
CITATION (1pt)
Prior to the summary and critique, include the article citation in APA format.
SUMMARY (13pts)
In your own words, summarize the study. Ensure that you use proper citations where appropriate necessary. You should briefly highlight each of the following points (please organize the summary using appropriate section headings and sub-headings, as is done here):
Introduction and background (4pts)
· What is being investigated?
· Briefly discuss relevant background information that helps frame the research question(s).
o Note: look for information that is directly related to the research question(s) and hypotheses
o Note: this only needs to be between 3-5 sentences
· What is/are the research question(s)?
· What are the hypotheses? – if these are not stated, mention this in your summary Methodology (5pts)
Participants
· Describe the participant population with any relevant information (e.g., age, language(s) spoken, relevant language background, etc.)
Experimental tasks
· Name and describe the experimental task that was performed
· Describe the type of stimuli used (e.g., phonemes, words, sentences, etc.)
· What was the task measuring? Results (2pt)
· Summarize the main results of the findings
o Note: you do not need to go into any form of statistical detail here (no stats or graphs), just provide a few sentences on what was found
Discussion/Conclusion (2pts)
· How do the results relate to the research question(s) and hypotheses?
o Note: do not use the word “prove” or “proof” here! In scientific research we find “evidence supporting X, Y, and Z”
· Summarize the main points of the discussion
· Briefly mention any future directions (if the authors touch on this)
CRITIQUE (5pts)
In this section, provide your own thoughts and critique on the article. Topics of discussion can include the following:
· Did you find the article to be well structured?
· Was the rationale for the research question(s) and hypotheses sufficiently justified? How?
· Was the task sufficient in tapping into the research question?
· If you were to do a similar study, would you do anything differently? If so, what?
Note: You may provide your thoughts on other aspects of the article that are not mentioned in this list. Make sure that you analyze the article and provide thorough thoughts. You will not get full points for simply stating that the article was well written.
RELATED ARTICLE (5pts)
Find one related primary source article (must be published in an academic journal) that is not mentioned in the article. Please include the following:
· Briefly summarize the article
o Note: this should only be a couple of sentences talking about the topic and research outcomes
· Discuss how the article you found is related to the article you read
o E.g., the study focused on similar research questions, the study was an extension of the article you read, etc.
REFERENCES (1pts)
Include a list of any references (in APA format) that you cite in your assignment. You do not need to include the reference for the article, this is already included at the beginning of the assignment.
