Essay Prompt: Immigrant children of color experience ethnic identity crises while growing up in the U.S.
Some Asian American children want to deny their ethnicity to be assimilated into the
mainstream culture, and tend to lack self-esteem and hold negative, distorted views of their
own ethnicity. Researchers such as Min Zhou state that Asian American students who proudly
identify themselves with their own ethnicity in America (i.e., as Korean American, or as
Chinese American) do better in school and life. Considering these findings, t is imperative that
educators understand how and why many AA children experience ethnic identity crisis growing
up in America and find out how to help. In your essay, explain and discuss how American
history (e.g., Chinese Exclusion Act, Japanese Internment Camps) has been influencing AA
children to negatively view themselves, using Bronfenbrenner’s ecological theory (Week 4);
suggest how AA children might be encouraged to develop healthy ethnic identities. Your
references must be from course materials.
