Assignment 3: Comparative Analysis of Texts in a Profession

In this assignment, you’ll select two pieces of writing from a profession of your choice (though I
suggest you choose whatever profession you plan to join) and compare how those texts succeed
in achieving their rhetorical purposes.

Two pieces of writing you will use:
ARTICLE 1: Podgorica, Nertila, et al. “Identifying Ethical and Legal Issues in Elder Care.” Nursing Ethics, vol. 28, no. 7/8, Nov. 2021, pp. 1194–209. EBSCOhost, https://doi-org.libproxy.csudh.edu/10.1177/0969733020981761.

ARTICLE 2: Norton, Wendy, and Elaine Wright. “Barriers and Facilitators to Fertility-Related Discussions with Teenagers and Young Adults with Cancer: Nurses’ Experiences.” Journal of Adolescent & Young Adult Oncology, vol. 9, no. 4, Aug. 2020, pp. 481–89. EBSCOhost, https://doi-org.libproxy.csudh.edu/10.1089/jayao.2019.0092.

You will use the two texts that talk about the same subject matter, but
differ in the audience – with one being written to members of the profession/discourse
community and one being written to outsiders/laypeople.

Purpose: The purpose of this assignment is to consolidate your knowledge about rhetorical
situations and discourse communities, and then apply this knowledge to a professional discourse
community. It also demonstrates your ability to do research.

Audience: Your audience for this project will be your peers in this classroom. You can assume
that they have the same general knowledge of rhetoric that you do (since they’ve read the same
material about it), but that they’re not familiar with the discourse community you’re describing.

Length: Six pages minimum

Key concepts: RHETORICAL SITUATION, DISCOURSE COMMUNITY. GENRE

Be sure to cite all sources in proper MLA format and include a Works Cited Page. At this
the juncture of the semester, you must know who to clearly cite sources and include an
accurate Works Cited page.
