(The link of the story The Chinese Violin) https://youtu.be/j_hF8mCNDHY

Write a topic sentence that includes the full title and full name of the author and defines the main focus of situation of the story. Example: The contemporary realistic story, The Chinese Violin by Madeleine Thien, is about a young Chinese girl and her father immigrating from
China to Toronto, Canada. Do NOT copy or plagiarize my example but use it to help write
your own topic sentence.

Summarize the plot of the story. Be sure to include enough details so that someone who has not read the story can understand what the story is about.

Discuss why Madeleine Thien writes The Chinese Violin in the first-person point of view.
Why is it important to know the young girl’s thoughts

Discuss the setting, particularly given the importance to establishing the realism of this
immigrant story. How is living in Toronto different from living in China?

Discuss the characters. Discuss how Lin Lin changes over the course of the story. Discuss
how Lin Lin’s dad changes. There are important supporting characters that help develop the father and Lin Lin. Think about the role of the criminals, the role of the school friend that
helps Lin Lin learn English, the role of the restaurant owner who gives the father a job. How do these supporting characters help add to the overall theme and message of the story as well as to its realism?

Discuss key themes in the story. Think about Lin Lin’s experience in school where she is
made fun of for how she speaks and looks, or when the dad has difficulty getting work as a new immigrant from China. Think how the immigrant story is intended to educate young
readers about acceptance of immigrants.

Discuss the symbolism of the dream sequence in the story. Discuss how the author makes
the dream sequence clearly a dream so that it is not confused for fantasy.

Discuss the symbolism of the violin. Think about what the violin symbolizes about memories of China that Lin Lin and her dad share in their new country. The violin could also symbolize how Lin Lin and her dad at first struggled and found the new country unaccepting, when the violin was broken and their money stolen and Lin Lin was made fun of at school and the dad was discriminated against because he was foreign. When people started to accept Lin Lin
and her dad, their future changed as did the ability to get a new violin.
