Film and TV Project

FTV – Project 2
For this project, you will take what you’ve learned about film and television and use that knowledge to craft a pitch for a new film or TV series based on the following podcast, which you can access in the FTV material within the “Readings & Viewings” folder on Blackboard:
Scamfluencers season 1 podcast, “Ballet’s Lethal Start-Up” (use episodes 1 and 2: “Black Swan, Inc.” and “Pointe and Shoot” as the basis for your pitch)
Your idea and writing must be your own. Do not copy ideas from your discussion section, peers, or real films or television shows. Plagiarized projects will fail and be reported as academic misconduct.
Requirements for the pitch:
Your new film or TV series should be based on the details of the podcast listed above. Do not pick a different podcast of your own or create a different story.
Required information, in this order with clear labels:
Identify whether you are pitching a film or TV series, and state your new film’s or TV series’ title (~5 words or fewer for the title)
A specific existing American TV broadcast network, basic or premium cable channel, or streaming platform that your film or TV series would best fit—with an explanation for why it would fit well there, including comparisons to other films or shows on the same network/cable channel/streaming platform. (~100 words)
A log line and “it’s like” sentence for your film or TV series (~25 words each)
More details on your film or TV series’ central story: (~200 words total)
Primary setting(s): city and country
Brief description of the two main characters, such as age, gender, ethnic identity, key personality or style traits
Main characters’ goals
Key conflicts the main characters face
What genre(s) could the film or TV series be identified with, for production and marketing purposes? Explain how your film or TV series fits the genre(s).
Two labeled images of specific locations that you would feature in the film or TV series, with a brief explanation of why you chose those locations (how they connect to the story and add visual interest). (~25 words for each location)
A description of your show’s soundscape design and what you want the sound to convey. For each of your locations above, describe sounds you would feature, such as nature sounds, sounds related to the plot, or sounds connected to the specific location. Do not use the score as part of your sound design. Please include sound files or links to sound clips you created or found online that illustrate the kinds of sounds described and clearly identify which location these clips are associated with. Note: We will share some helpful sites for sound clips (~100 words total, not including links)
Assignment continues on the next page.
Other requirements for the project:
Your header must include your name and your TA’s name and your discussion section letters (AC, BD, etc.).
Must be 450-550 words in length (approximately 2 pages, not including the images), double-spaced, Times New Roman, 12-point font, with 1” margins.
Use complete sentences, proper grammar, and logical paragraphing. You should organize the paragraphs into the six sections listed above. You may use personal pronouns, but do not use filler phrases like “I think,” “I believe,” etc. that make writing seem hesitant and unsure.
Use only these formats: .doc, .doc, or .pdf; no GDocs or .pages.
Due Date: March 30th (before midnight)—do not wait until midnight to submit it!

Essay 2: Personal Essay

PROMPT

Write a personal essay that focuses on one or two of the following themes: gender, sexuality, race, ethnicity, national identity, friendship, love, family, or mental health.

This is a personal essay, so write about personal experiences; and include some insights about those experiences.

Remember to SHOW, not tell. In other words, instead of merely “telling” or generalizing, be specific (in relation to the theme).

Note: You are allowed to use the short stories Junot Diaz and the essays of Roxane Gay as sources of inspiration, but not imitation. The essay you write must be entirely your own.

Tip 1: Before rushing to find answers, spend time trying to better understand the assignment. Break down the assignment into parts. And continue to revisit the prompt as you write.

Tip 2: To go deeper into any issue, whether you are reading or writing, go beyond questions that start with WHAT. Instead, delve into questions that start with HOW and WHY.

Tip 3: Rewrite and revise your essay continuously. Read it aloud: read with your ears, not just your eyes! Be proactive about asking for help. Rewrite. Rewrite. Rewrite. It is not a race to the finish line. Writing is a step-by-step process.

Format and other requirements for the Final Draft:

Times New Roman typeface, size 12, single space
An essay without a listed, accurate word count will receive no credit
An essay above or below the word count will receive no credit

For the Strategic Analysis and Operational Considerations assessment, you will create a 5-7-page environmental analysis for the fictional St. Antony Main Medical Center. Also, as part of your submission you will address the importance of creating a strategic framework to help the organization address the results of the analysis.

Introduction

Success in strategic planning requires an understanding of the organization, the environment in which it operates, its resources, competitors, vision and mission, and its capabilities on a day-to-day basis. How does one gain this understanding? Strategic thinkers evaluate changing environments, analyze data, questions expectations, and develop new ideas (Ginter, Duncan, & Swayne, 2013). Understanding and analyzing the situation requires analyzing the environments in which the organization exists and developing or refining the organization’s strategy (Ginter, Duncan, & Swayne, 2013). Various techniques and analyzes are conducted to identify these important considerations.

Engaging in the strategic planning process requires leaders to be aware of their organization’s internal operations as well as the external environment in which it operates. Various tools exist to aid organizations in the strategic planning process. The strength, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats (SWOT) analysis is a common tool utilized to conduct an environmental analysis. An additional tool is Porter’s five forces model. This framework is utilized to examine the competition the organization faces in the environment in which they operate (Healey & Marchese, 2012). Other tools include mind maps and balanced scorecards. Data obtained via these analyzes and examinations will guide the organization in determining what it wants to do and what it is capable of doing (White, 2012).

Preparation

This assessment is based around the Vila Health: Strategic Analysis and Operational Considerations media simulation. Be sure you have completed this activity before completing this assessment.

You may also find it useful to research on strategic planning, Porter’s five forces model, environmental scanning, and strategic frameworks beyond the resources provided.

In addition to the scenario presented in the Vila Health: Strategic Analysis and Operational, incorporate the following change in the organization’s environment when creating your analysis for this assessment:

A new for-profit 50-bed acute care hospital is slated to open in the next eight months, offering a full complement of services.
The goal of this assessment is to create a succinct and thorough analysis of the internal and external environment for St. Antony Medical Center. This report should help stakeholders understand the importance of understanding the environment in which the organization operates. Additionally, it should clearly lay out an analysis of the internal and external environments and apply one or more strategic frameworks to analyze the environment and raise operational considerations.

This assessment has two distinct parts:

Part 1: Understanding the Environment
Part 2: Organizational Analysis
When completing your assessment, read the instructions carefully to make sure you are addressing all the scoring guide criteria.

Part 1: Understanding the Environment
For this part of your assessment, the focus should be on providing a brief analysis of the ways in which competition within the health care industry effects and should be incorporated into strategic planning. As part of your analysis you should consider the types of evidence and analysis that would be compelling to the stakeholders at St. Anthony Medical Center to ensure that they are onboard and understand the importance at considering the competition in the environment when undertaking strategic planning. This relates to both internal and external factors.

As you create this part of your assessment, it may be helpful to think about these areas and aspects of an organization that compete for time, attention, and resources:

External competition.
Staffing.
Stakeholders.
Organizational Capacity.
Part 2: Organizational Analysis
For the second part of your assessment, you will present an environmental analysis for the organization. Additionally, you will discuss one or more strategic frameworks (for example, a SWOT analysis) and apply it to the scenario presented in the media simulation. Finally, you will create a compelling argument as to the need for utilizing a strategic framework and the potential implications for the organization’s future if nothing is employed.

It may be useful to apply Porter’s Five Forces of Competitive Position Analysis when conducting and communicating your analysis.

Additional Requirements
Structure: Include a title page, table of contents, and reference page.
Length: 5–7 pages.
References: Cite at least three current scholarly or professional resources.
Format: Use APA style for references and citations.
You may wish to refer to the following APA resources to help with your structure, formatting, and style:

Font: Times New Roman font, 12 point, double-spaced.

Exploring a Communicative Event in your own linguaculture

Steps you need to take
There are four main steps you need to do in order to complete this assignment.

You will need to:

1. Record
2. transcribe
3. explore and
4. report on a ‘communicative event’
Dell Hymes’ ethnographic framework
You need to use Dell Hymes’ ethnographic framework which is set out in the Saville-Troike (2008) article which can be accessed via the Reading List and also found in Chapter 14 – Analysing Discourse – of your prescribed text by Holmes & Wilson (2022, p. 516).

Communicative Event – Holmes & Wilson (2023, p.521; pp.516-520)
For this assignment, a communicative event is an exchange with obvious boundaries in a typically occurring situation, where the participants have clear role relationships. You will need to provide a more detailed, referenced definition in your essay and the event you choose should conform to your definition.

Record
Collecting data for your Communicative Events
1. choose a simple spoken communicative event (CE) where the interlocutors are speaking their first language (also your first language). (NB: You can choose to be a participant-observer or just an observer. This is an exercise in self awareness as well as in careful observation, so you must be mindful of your own cultural filters).

2. plan to do an audio recording, and if possible, a visual recording of your specific communicative event. There is a plethora of electronic devices available for this, but choose something that can be turned on without participants’ knowledge. You want an AUTHENTIC, SPONTANEOUS event, not something staged by well-meaning “actors” (See 4. Privacy and confidentiality issues).

3. Keep the recording short so that you can give a detailed description and in-depth analysis of it. (Half a minute is likely to be adequate, but five minutes is definitely too long. If you are only audio-recording it and the interlocutors are face-to-face, take care to try to note and write down all the gestures and facial expressions used as soon as possible after recording the communicative event.)

4. choose an event of a type, which occurs fairly regularly so that your intuitions about social norms and conventions can be explored and validated by reference to similar situations in your experience.

Some examples which have been successful in the past include a short telephone conversation, a short chat with a neighbour over the back fence about the weather, ordering a meal in a restaurant, the beginning of a lesson in your classroom, buying cough medicine at a pharmacy, buying the daily newspaper, and making a withdrawal at a bank.

Privacy and confidentiality
Ideally, the person in your communicative event will not know that they are being recorded. This will ensure that the communicative event is authentic and not staged.

If you feel uncomfortable recording without the participant’s knowledge, choose to use a communicative event with a family member or close friend, who you know will not mind.

After the communicative event has finished, you will need to tell the other person(s) that you recorded the conversation, explain the purpose of the recording, how it will be used, and seek their permission to use it in an assignment. Very rarely people will not give permission, in which case you will need to delete the recording and seek out another situation.

If there is the possibility of a breach of confidentiality, you should get signed written permission from your participant/s and include it as a scanned appendix to your essay.

Transcribe
According to the Communication Research Net, ‘Transcribing is the process of representing, in written form, some stretch of lived activity. The resulting transcription provides a document that is easily perused and examined, and in a variety of institutional settings it serves as the official record of the actual proceedings’.

Before you begin to record your Communicative Event click on the following link to view the following video to see how the Jefferson Transcription method is used. You should consider how you will adapt this method of transcription to your situation. We don’t expect that you will become proficient in transcribing at this level but this video will provide you with a guide for the basic requirements for transcribing.

When writing up your transcription:

Give participants’ pseudonyms (A, B, C, etc., letters of their first names, or P1, P2, etc.). If you choose to use full names as pseudonyms, then make sure that these are not participants’ real names.
If your data are not in English, provide both a transcription in the language of the data and an English translation.
Although several different transcription methods are used in the readings, you are to use the recommended one in the unit. You will find that the concentration and detail required to transcribe your CE will help you pinpoint some of the intricacies, which you would not otherwise notice.Transcribe

Report on a communicative event
Model for your written assignment
Under Assignment 1, I have provided a model from a previous year. You should not copy anything from this example, but it does provide a good structure for this assignment. While this model was based on a radio interview. I would recommend that you use a more personal text for your transcript and written report.

How to structure your report
Introduction
Clarify and reference your understanding of what a communicative event is
Give a brief description of your Communicative Event
Explain how the CE was recorded and note any issues of “observer paradox” which may have distorted the data
Provide full details based on Del Hymes’ ethnographic framework (using headings)
Explain why it is useful for language teachers to be aware of the complexity of authentic, everyday discourse.
In your conclusion, draw together the key points about your Communicative Event and briefly discuss the implications for you as a teacher in your particular context.
In the section using Del Hymes’ framework, you need to comment on each of the eleven components identified by SavilleTroike (2008) and Holmes & Wilson (2022, p.516):
Genre or type of event
Topic
Purpose/function
Setting
Key or emotional tone
Participants
Message form
Message content
Act sequence
Rules for interaction
Norms of interpretation.

Statement of Facts from Defenses POV- OJ Simpson Case

It is 1994, and Orenthal James Simpson has been arrested for—and charged with—two counts of
first-degree murder in the killings of Nicole Brown Simpson and Ronald “Ron” Goldman. Your
supervising attorney has tasked you with drafting a brief Statement of Facts for a motion they are
writing.

In writing your Statement of Facts, be mindful of the facts that pertain to each element of the
alleged offense—particularly those most favorable to your position. That said, the final product
must be a fair, accurate, and ethical presentation of the facts of the case. You are to assume you
work for the side you were assigned during the first class—that is, the opposite side for which
you expressed a preference on the first day.

A template has been provided for you to use. The assignment’s body must be typed in 12-point
font, double-spaced. There is no minimum word count, though the final product is not to exceed
three pages, including the caption and preliminary information. Proper spelling, grammar, and
punctuation will be considered, and repeated mistakes will result in a deduction.
