Close Reading Exercise

Goal: Close reading, rereading, reflection, and synthesis by identifying a key word to explore how deeply you can read. This assignment also encourages you to tune into textual echoes, or patterns of words and ideas that recur over the course of a single text.

Task: In Edwidge Danticat, “A Wall of Fire Rising,” choose one word (or series of synonyms) that seems ripe for following. You might think of these as patterns, or echoes, that catch your attention as you read: recurring ideas, themes, concepts, questions, problems that the text is invested in. This word (or its synonyms) should appear across the short story in at least three instances. This word should be a noun, verb, or adjective, and not a word such as “and” or “the” or a pronoun such as “she” or “they.”

Once you’ve identified the word you want to track through the narrative, ask yourself what key word (in other words, a theme, concept, or major idea) your chosen word (or synonyms) suggests to you. For example, if the echoes are words such as “devil,” “diabolical,” and “wicked,” your keyword might be “evil.” Remember that the keyword will be a larger concept, issue, subject, topic, tension, or problem with which the text is concerned, not necessarily the exact word(s) you’ve identified in the text. Again, your word could be related to several synonyms you find in the reading.

As you select your keyword, consider these questions:

What kind of “career” can you describe for your key word as you track each appearance? By “career,” I mean what work does that key word do for the text? How does it develop over time from usage to usage, word to word, synonym to synonym?

When the word appears the first time, what’s happening in the narrative? How is the word used? Consider its connotation and denotation. In other words, what is the word’s meaning and what does the word imply?

Does its usage change or deepen in each subsequent context, in its turns and returns, as the author changes it, chooses different synonyms or positions it in new contexts?

Does the key word have a changing meaning, or connotation, in each instance? If so, how is each appearance different from the one before and the one after?

How might your key word focus the narrative’s larger issues and themes?

If you’re fluent in another language, what’s your key word in that language? Is it used the same way in that language as you see it used by the author of the text?

As you follow your key word across the text, first consult the Oxford English Dictionary aka OED (FIU Library > Research Tools > A-Z List) to investigate the word’s nuanced meaning, its etymological history, its related verbal forms, and its historical usages. This is a key component of the assignment.

With this history of your key word in mind, return to the text and ask yourself:

Why did the author select this word and not another?

What precise ideas or values does the word convey?

Does it vary, repeat, return? Why and to what effect?

Write a paragraph (min: 350 words, max: 500 words) on your analysis of this key word. Consider the following:

What questions occurred to you as you followed the career of your key word?

What larger historical or cultural or linguistic associations does your key word suggest? How has it been used historically? How might your author be “playing” with the slippage of the word’s meaning to suggest other meanings in the text?

What specific thematic or conceptual issues does it evoke in the text?

Example Paragraph: In Chaucer’s Prioress’s Tale, the murdered boy is consistently referred to as “litel,” little; he even has a “litel book,” and the item that is used to keep him singing after death is a grain—a little seed. In the MED, the connotations of the adjective “litel” suggest “sympathy or affection. . . implying innocence or ignorance.” Indeed, the boy is also referred to as “this innocent” (which the OED’s etymology indicates develops from a negation: in-noxious, without harm). Chaucer thus mobilizes littleness and innocence to engage readers’ sympathies and shape perceptions of the boy as fragile, harmless, and pure. These associations would emphasize medieval readers’ horror at his degradation as his body is mutilated and tainted by disposal in a refuse pit, and delight as God’s might is shown through the smallest of seeds. It seems like the work of littleness in the text would predispose readers to perceive the Jews, in contrast, as great monsters. Yet this treatment of littleness is complicated: In the poem, the Jews live in a ghetto (a little area) in a “greet citee,” and are themselves a minority population (a little group). As a result, how does Chaucer use littleness both to excuse and to justify persecution?

Role of immune checkpoints in the early stages of cancer

I have already wrote the introduction and some body paraagraph i need help on the other half body paragraphs and conclusion to finish my paper. The body paragraph needs to cover this information down below

Body paragraph :
Tumor cells strategies to proliferate and escape in the immune checkpoints
1) Program Cell death (PD-1) and Program Cell death ligand (PD-L1)
2) Anti PD-1/PD-L1

Body paragraph :
Drugs used to inhibit the early stages of CancerDrugs

conclusion: should wrap up everything in more depth :
In general, there is growing evidence that inhibiting the interaction between Pd-1 and PD L1 can increase T-cell proliferation and can have a significant anticancer effect during immunological checkpoints. Unfortunately, owing of ignorance, carelessness, financial limitations, and religious views, early phases are frequently difficult to identify. While in some industrialized nations, early stages of cancer can be identified using a variety of methods, including diagnostic imaging, gene testing, chemotherapy, or immunotherapies. Finally, this paper’s goal was to show how the immune system faithfully carries out its duty in ludicrous and dangerous circumstances. In general, there is growing evidence that inhibiting the interaction between Pd-1 and PD L1 can increase T-cell proliferation and can have a significant anticancer effect during immunological checkpoints. Theories of Emotion

Neuropsychology: Theories of Emotion and the role of the limbic system and frontal lobe in processing the emotion.

For this Assignment, you will write a 2–3 page expository paper analyzing theories of emotion and the role of the limbic system and frontal lobe in the processing of emotion.

Utilize the following scenario in the construction of your paper:

John is a 42-year-old construction worker who was leaving the construction site to take his lunch break. While walking from the site, he heard a loud crashing sound. John turned around to see a crane tip over and fall to the ground. Initially, John experienced feelings of terror at the sight of the crane falling and fear that someone would be hurt. However, as the crane landed, he was able to see that it fell on an unoccupied plot of land.

Include the following in your paper:

Examine the three theories of emotion in the context of the scenario.

Analyze the different features of the three theories of emotion with respect to the cognitive and neuropsychological processes involved in John’s processing of the events.

Differentiate the three theories of emotion and how processing of the events would be different under each theory.

State which theory of emotion you feel is the most accurate and why.

Break down the neuropsychological processing of emotion with respect to the functioning of the limbic system (hypothalamus, thalamus, amygdala, hippocampus), and the frontal lobe.

Analyze how the different parts of the brain are involved in the processing of emotion as well as the flow of information within the limbic system and frontal lobe.

The Last Victim Book Report

must be on The Last Victim by Jason Moss. After reading the book, students must critically analyze it from a criminological standpoint according to the following sections. Consider the following sections as an outline for what your final project should contain (and separate your paper into these sections accordingly):

summary:
In this section of the project, students must summarize The Last Victim. This section is typically one to two pages in length and discusses the plot of the story as well as the significant individuals involved.

Analysis of Jason and His Behavior:
Analyze Jason and his behavior from three vantage points, which should be separated as sub-sections within this area of the final:
1) How Jason aligns or not with typical victims of serial murder in terms of demographic background (age, race, gender) and the relationship to the offender
2) How Jason aligns or not with typical victims of homicide in terms of demographic background (age, race, gender) and the relationship to the offender
3) What Jason’s likely source of fascination was relative to homicide (see The Will to Kill, Chapter 1)
this section is two pages

Analysis of Gacy and His Behavior
Analyze Gacy and his behavior from the following vantage points, which should be separated as sub-sections within this area of the final:

1) How Gacy aligns or not with typical perpetrators of homicide in terms of demographic background (age, race, gender), the relationship to the victim, and their methods of murder
2) How Gacy aligns or not with typical perpetrators of serial murder in terms of demographic background (age, race, gender), the relationship to the victim, and their methods of murder
3)How Gacy aligns or not with the childhood risk factors of serial murderers (specifically, the MacDonald Triad)
4) How Gacy engaged in impression management pre-incarceration and post-incarceration (particularly with Jason). In this section, ensure you explain what Impression Management is and the front/backstages.
5) Explain at least three sexual paraphilias that Gacy may have had based on information from the book, lectures, and readings.
6) Explain whether Gacy was likely a psychopath or a sociopath
This section is 4 pages

Theoretical Perspective
Select two theoretical perspectives discussed in class that BEST explains Gacy’s crimes. In your explanation, ensure you discuss the premise, all key components, and then spend time applying both of those to Gacy’s crimes. Given it is discussed in prior sections, you may NOT use psychological disorders or explanations in this area.
This section two pages.

What does food mean?

Hello,

I am needing a compare/contrast essay paper on What does food mean reading passages from the The Carolina Table.

What does food mean (in terms of cultural significance, emotional significance, personal identity, etc.) to North Carolina writers? Compare and/or contrast writers’ food experiences/memories using essays from The Carolina Table to answer this question.

Before you begin, please ensure that you are familiar with how to synthesize sources (MLA-3d in A Writer’s Reference) and with The Carolina Table. Review these resources if needed. You should also view the UNC Writing Center’s resource on Comparing and Contrasting Links to an external site. as that is the organizational pattern (specifically, point-by-point in most cases) that this essay will follow.

View Synthesis Essay Topics and Sources. Choose ONE of the topics listed and read the prompt carefully.
Read as many of the source texts listed as needed in order to familiarize yourself with the topic. If the topic is one that you are already familiar with, you will need to familiarize yourself with at least two assigned sources regardless as this essay will require you to synthesize them.
Determine your answer to the topic question. The prompt indicates the subjects that you will be comparing and/or contrasting. You should consider whether you will be exploring similarities, differences, or both. Your thesis statement will reveal the subjects (who or what is being compared) and indicate what similarities and/or differences exist between them.
Next, brainstorm similarities and/or differences.
Once you have a list of similarities and/or differences, choose at least three that you can
elaborate on. While you may use some prior knowledge, you will be required to use assigned sources as well. At least one body paragraph must demonstrate synthesis by including evidence from multiple sources. You do not have to use multiple sources in every paragraph, however.

Use your outline as a starting point to draft a 500 to 1,000-word (about two-to-four double-spaced pages) comparison-contrast essay that uses multiple sources. You should compose your essay in Microsoft Word or a program that can save in Word file format (.docx).

Build an introduction around your thesis statement. Use the introduction to establish the topic and its importance. The introduction and thesis statement should set up the essay’s comparisons.

Include at least three body paragraphs. Under point-by-point organization, each body paragraph will focus on a particular similarity or difference between the subjects compared. This similarity or difference will be stated in a topic sentence and supported by relevant evidence (examples, descriptions, explanations, etc.). At least one body paragraph must demonstrate synthesis by including support from two or more sources. You are not required to use multiple sources in every paragraph. You may include relevant prior knowledge, and, potentially, personal experience, but you are still required to use multiple sources assigned for your topic.

Use transitions when needed to move between ideas and show relationships between them.

Include a conclusion. Your conclusion should reinforce your thesis albeit not in the exact same words as you used in the introduction. Your conclusion can also sum up the essay’s similarities and/or differences and offer a final thought on the topic.
IV. Cite and Format

Finally, apply MLA page and citation formatting.

To apply page formatting, please refer to the Document Formatting Guide.

To apply citation formatting, please first ensure that you understand what MLA citation requires. See MLA-2a in A Writer’s Reference or watch the Video tutorial on MLA documentation style if you need a refresher.

Use signal phrases to attribute ideas taken from sources. If the person you are attributing is not the person who wrote the source, include the author’s last name(s) in parentheses after the information appears (parenthetical citation). You would also use parenthetical citations to include page numbers for books and ebooks.

Source information may be presented through summary, paraphrase, or direct quotation, but all of them require attribution. Use quotation marks when you are borrowing exact words. Do not quote excessively. When synthesizing, use transitions and explanations/analysis to balance your use of source material and create a home for it inside of your paragraphs.

Include a Works Cited page with an entry for each article. See A Writer’s Reference MLA-4b. For online articles and Web pages, see the model for “Short work from a website” (or this resource
Download this resource or this video). For an ebook, access the source, and look for Cite Book. Make sure MLA is the selected format. For essays in The Carolina Table, follow the models for “One selection from an anthology or collection” (if you only use one essay) or “Two or more selections from an anthology or collection” (if you use multiple essays). See also this video.
