Mental Health and Recidivism – Research Proposal

Part 2 is a continuation of part 1 (attached) through to completion of the research proposal and will include the following:

1) research design
2) justification of chosen research design in view of appropriate safeguards against: measurement bias, and related validity and reliability concerns
3) operationalized variables
4) sampling strategy (if appropriate) with discussion supporting selection of sampling strategy in view of appropriate population representation
5) data collection methods with discussion supporting selection of data collection methods in view of appropriate safeguards against: measurement bias, and related validity and reliability concerns
6) discussion of limitations, including qualitative research questions/methods that could fill gaps, and
7) a thorough discussion of potential implications of findings (assume the hypothesis is supported by evidence).

I am looking for 5 additional pages added onto what I already have with the above information used as a guide.

Research design: quasi-experiment using social systems theory as the framework to understand how individuals are embedded into their larger societies and how their environment plays a role in their likelihood or lack of likelihood to return to prison following their incarceration.

Justification: The goal is to analyze the difference between qualified and non-qualified providers, since several prisons don’t have clinicians/people who are qualified to provide clinical mental health services.

Operationalized variables: Independent variable (IV): The provision of mental health services, specifically the presence of qualified clinicians in prisons

Dependent variable (DV): The rate of recidivism, which will be measured as the proportion of individuals who return to prison within 5 years following their release

IV attributes: Presence or lack of presence of qualified clinicians, which will be measured as a simple yes or no

DV attributes: higher rates or lower rates of recidivism, measured along a continuum

Sampling strategy: I would want to take a sample of at least 1000 previously incarcerated individuals in California, Texas, Georgia, Florida, and Ohio (top 5 states with the highest incarceration rates) who had a history of meeting with mental health providers. Whether those providers were qualified, it doesn’t matter. the state with the highest rate of incarceration and recidivism.

I am struggling with 5 through 7, so I would really appreciate help with those. For 5, I am thinking about using state incarceration records from the 5 states mentioned, but I’m not sure how bias and threats to validity would play into that. Thanks for any help you can provide.

Please let me know if there are any questions!

Consider the three arguments in support of the existence of God: the Ontological Argument, the Cosmological Argument, and the Teleological Argument. Explain these three competing arguments by making reference to the authors included in our course readings. Which argument offers the most plausible justification for the existence of God? Explain why.

Please read the PDF attached and the instructions below before answering the question.

This short essay question. It will be graded out of 100 marks. The main intent of this short essay question is to ensure that you have a sound grasp of the fundamentals of the material presented in this unit. To that end, there is a 4 page (1000 words) limit for this question. Remember: I’m not so concerned with whether you agree with a particular author or not. The quality of your answer is based on your exposition of the competing positions, your comparative analysis of those positions and, lastly, your argument in support of the position you defend.
As with all the short essay questions in this course, this short essay question is not designed to be a “research” question. There is no requirement to get material from external sources such as other authors, or reference websites, who have summarized, or criticized, the authors you are dealing with. In effect, including such material defeats your purpose in completing your essay because you are essentially telling me what some other person thought about the material you should be explaining and assessing. If you make reference to sources external to the course readings it will be detrimental to your mark. In some cases, I may ask you to revise and re-submit your short essay. The point of your essay is to formulate the course material and develop your critical response. You can only do this by working with the course material and developing your own ideas about the issue.
I encourage you to work closely with the online instructional content and the assigned course text readings in completing this essay. To this end, I will be expecting you to make appropriate citations in your essay when referring to the authors in the assigned course text readings. Please refer to the Coursework Instructions for the acceptable format for citations in your short essay.

What Is an Academic Paper?
An academic paper is a document that critically analyzes a specific topic. It begins with general information about the topic and then moves into the specifics. The specifics are explained by answering the who, what, when, where, and why about the topic. Academic papers should be written in the third person and maintain an impersonal tone. This paper isn’t about your opinion and shouldn’t include words like I, me, we, or us.

Sections of the Paper
The paper should include the following sections:

Title page
Table of contents
Abstract
Introduction
Body
Application
Approaches or treatments
Expected outcomes or recommendations
Conclusion
Reference list
Title Page
The title page identifies the title of the paper, your name, the course name, and the date. The title of the paper should reflect the content.

Table of Contents
A table of contents identifies the sections within the research paper. This part of the paper is typically created last, since it lists the topics and their associated page numbers within the paper. In Microsoft Word, you can generate a table of contents automatically by using headings such as Heading 1, Heading 2, and then using the TOC command.

The following is an example of a table of contents:

Abstract—Page 1
Introduction—Page 2
Vitamin C: An Essential Nutrient—Page 4
Conclusion—Page 8
Reference List—Page 9

Abstract
The abstract is a summary of the paper. This part of the paper is also written after the entire paper is complete. The length of the abstract should be about 100 to 200 words and should include information that appears elsewhere in the paper.

Introduction
The introduction is where the topic of interest is introduced to the reader. This is also known as the statement of purpose—that is, what you want the reader to learn from this paper and the perspective they’ll learn it from.

This part of the paper should be four to six paragraphs in length, totaling about one page. Information that appears here may include generalities about the purpose of the paper, who will benefit from reading the information in this paper, why the topic is important, and the overall goal of writing the paper. This section should answer the question of what this paper will be about—but of course, answering that directly with a phrase such as, “This paper is about. . .” is unacceptable.

The last sentence in the introduction needs to be your thesis statement. If you’ve never written a thesis statement, the online writing center, The Writer’s Block, has information to help you write and develop a thesis statement.

Body of the Paper
The body of the paper should be three to five pages long. It should include why the chosen topic is important, who the topic affects, when it needs to be addressed, how it can be prevented, any statistical information you’ve found about the topic, where changes can be made, and what’s going well in relation to this topic.

You can break the body of your essay into different parts if it’s easier for you to organize the information this way. For example, you might section it off using these subsections: application, approaches, treatments, outcomes, recommendations, and so on.

Conclusion
The final section of the paper is the conclusion or summary. Here, all of the major points discussed in the paper are reviewed, along with the conclusions you’ve formed by analyzing the topic.

Reference List
All academic papers must contain a list of the references used when researching and writing the paper. It should be formatted using APA format. Again, Penn Foster’s online writing center, The Writer’s Block, is a great resource for creating and formatting a proper reference list.

Keep in mind that there are good and bad internet resources.

Primary sources are written by the scientists who are actually doing the research, carrying out experiments, and drawing conclusions.
Secondary sources consolidate and translate the work of the primary sources for more general audiences.
Tertiary sources are sites that gather information from other sites and aren’t necessarily reliable.
When evaluating websites, be aware of who or what organization has created the content. Make sure you use sites without a bias or hidden agenda that might lead them to present material in a deceptive way.

Wikipedia is a tertiary source. While it’s a great place to start your research, you must validate every statement you offer, and that means referencing secondary and primary sources only. No tertiary sources should be used.

Be sure that any website you reference is a primary source or a secondary source such as the following:

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)
World Health Organization (WHO)
MedLine Plus
National Institutes of Health (NIH)
Recognized agencies such as the American Diabetes Association (ADA), American Heart Association (AHA), the American Lung Association (ALA), and the American Cancer Society (ACS) are also considered valid secondary sources.

Writing the Paper
The following instructions should be implemented when preparing your paper.

Set all page margins to 1-inch.
Begin each section on a new page. For example, the abstract should be on one page, the introduction should start on a new page, and the body of the paper should start on a new page.
Use Times New Roman 12-point font.
Support your data by citing specific information from the textbook, websites, and any other references, using correct APA guidelines.
Write the table of contents after the entire paper has been written, or use the automatic TOC generator in MS Word.
Write the abstract after the entire paper has been written.
Proofread your completed paper several times to check for typographical errors. You can also use websites such as Grammarly.com to help with these types of errors. Reading the paper out loud is another excellent way to find your errors. Use spell check and grammar check in Word.
Save the completed paper as a Word document (.doc or .docx) file to ensure that your assignment can be evaluated.

2. Discuss the type of change that this implementation will involve. Do you think that this type of change will be successful? Why or why not? What might you do to improve this change?

Assignment Description:

For this assignment, you will be placed (virtually) in a real-world scenario that occurs in schools. Please read the following description of the authentic performance task and complete the requirements as described in the scenario.

Imagine that you are now heading-up the team that will work to implement the two-week curriculum module for all of the 10th grade teachers in your district that you developed in Week 5. You have a meeting scheduled with your implementation team to discuss how the implementation of the curriculum, as well as professional development for the teachers, will proceed.

1. Address best practices for implementing change within an organization, including the five guidelines for successfully curriculum implementation in your textbook.

2. Discuss the type of change that this implementation will involve. Do you think that this type of change will be successful? Why or why not? What might you do to improve this change?

3. Identify the key players in this change and how you can facilitate successful communication and cooperation between all involved parties.

4. Describe how you will create and deliver appropriate professional development that will make implementation successful. What factors would you need to consider?

5. Identify the resistors to change that you may encounter and how you can work to successfully alleviate these resistors. Discuss how recognizing and anticipating these resistors can make the implementation process more successful.

The plan should be 2000 words and should include at least three (3) citations. The sections should be clearly marked with headings so that your instructor knows which points you are addressing. Follow the guidelines for APA writing style. The title page and references page do not count towards the minimum word amount for this assignment.

The following specifications are required for this assignment:

*Length: 2000 words; answers must thoroughly address the questions in a clear, concise manner.

*Structure: Include a title page, introduction, and reference page in APA style. These do not count towards the minimum word count for this assignment.

*References: Use the appropriate APA style in-text citations and references for all resources utilized to answer the questions. Include at least three (3) scholarly sources to support your claims.
