Instructions:
• This essay should be 800 – 1000 words in length (this word count does not include your name, ID, title, date, map portion, or the Bibliography/References section).
• You must also demonstrate knowledge of basic geographic theory by using key definitions related to the topic (use terms from the textbook or other material from the course, just please remember to format these as formal references and link them to your essay sentences through intext citations)
• Your work must include at-least one additional reference (textbook or a popular news forum – i.e., The New York Times) that relates to your chosen dish. You must include this reference in a separate page using only one of the following titles: Bibliography, Reference, or Works Cited; making a full citation of this/these source/s.
I will provide both the textbook pdf / Core Concepts and Definitions
Including the reading with the assignment
Note: pdf page number is not the same as textbook page number. Also. I already defined ten concepts you are more than welcome to use others not defined
Summary:
For the first assignment option one, you may compose an essay where you explore one of your favorite foods. You must explore the complex global history of this type of food and the ingredients. This may sound simple, but it can get quite complicated quickly, so take your time and be methodological as you deconstruct the history.
HINT: The more details and complicated entanglements, the better!
Overall Breakdown of the Essay (by all means, use these headers to organize your essay)
Title:
Title your essay “The Geography of _______”
Introduction and History:
This is not an exercise where you need to include the recipe, although you may include a full recipe as an attachment. The purpose of this assignment is to unpack the complex global histories of a specific dish in a way that explores not only the dish itself, but also the history of the ingredients required to make it.
History of the Ingredients:
Once you describe the background and history of the dish, then list at least ten ingredients that go into making the dish. (If you select a simple dish, then you can extrapolate ingredient lists of the ingredients; for example, Adobo or Sazon, you can break down the list of ingredients in that part of the recipe).
This can be presented as a table that classifies each ingredient as one of the following:
• Indigenous
• Meso-American
• Andean Uplands
• Eastern Brazil
• Mediterranean
• West Africa
• East Africa
• Southwest Asia
• North Central China
• Southern and Southeastern Asia
Areas of Domestication:
Most dishes will contain several plant and animal ingredients that have been domesticated (at some point in history). Use the “Centers of Plant and Animal Domestication” (attached) as the main source reference.
You may also draw on the information and discussion concepts included in week four, when we talk about the environment and domestication.
Discuss at least three domesticated ingredients.
Ten course concepts:
In this section you will demonstrate a command of at least ten course concepts from the assigned reading from week one. These concepts will help you explore and explain why, when, and how ingredients moved around the world.
Think about where the ingredients were originally from and where the ingredient is currently sourced for this dish. How did that ingredient get there and become a major crop? Or is this an ingredient only a few people cultivate in a diaspora? Or even in a window sill?
Conclusion:
Briefly reflect on the complex global entanglement that must be acknowledged when describing this one dish.
Core Concepts and Definitions
It is considered best practice in academic writing to define each core concept or term the first time you use these in your assignment. Be sure to include the citation and a clear definition in your own words.
Think of the reasons why our ancestors were moving around and try to develop a geographically informed rationale to explain early cultivation, gathering, hunting or domestication of the ingredients.
Include at least ten of these core concepts/terms
Week 1 reading, pages 3 – 7, 21 – 25, 33 – 38
1. Human geography
2. Places
3. Sense of place
4. Regionalism
5. Scale
6. Globalization
7. Colonialism
8. Capitalism
9. Communism
10. Diaspora
11. Religion as cultural identity
12. Language as cultural identity
13. Dialects
14. Ethnicity
15. Race
16. Gender
17. Class
18. Sexuality
19. Urbanization
20. Migration
In the essay, I’ll be looking for you to use at least ten of these words in a context that explains what the concept means. These definitions should be part of the essay and include an in-text citation to show that you are using the definition from the text.
For example, the text describes human geography as research that ” focuses on the spatial organization of human activity and how humans make Earth into a home” (Marston et al., 2016; 4).
So, the above is the direct quotation of the definition. For the essay, you need to use the concept in a way that demonstrates you understand the meaning of the term.
For example:
The corn that is the base of this dish has a long history that is explored in this essay by drawing on the concept of human geography; this means that I will be investigating the way humans moved around the world and made places their homes by cultivating key food in these places (Marston et al., 2016; 4).

Write an essay in which you discuss issues of crime and punishment in the United States, as depicted in six films – The Thin Blue Line, Bowling for Columbine, The Farm, Capturing the Friedmans, Inside Job, and 13th (Ava Duvernay), What do these films tell us about crime in the U.S? What do these films tell us about the relationship between crime, punishment, and economic class? What do they tell us about the politics of punishment? Use specific elements from these films (eg., characters. scenes, themes, etc.) to illustrate your points, and cite the films using time code. Try to compare and contrast among films to make more general points and to speak to general themes.
To cite films, use the director’s name (or directors’ name) and timecode. Timecode identifies the hour and approximate minute to which a note refers. Seconds are not recorded.
