Discuss how the specific cinematic techniques or elements of a film support the message or point it is making?

For this response, you should focus on one of the films you have watched for class.
Film Analysis Essay Assignment
Write an essay of about 3 pages on the following topic.
Topic:
Your goal for this essay is to isolate a particular aspect of one of the films we’ve watched this semester (a character, a scene, a literary/cinematic device) and then write an essay in which you analyze and interpret this element. You want to be sure to limit yourself to a very focused topic as this essay is rather short (see below).
As you analyze and write about film, remember that you aren’t writing a review. Reviews are generally subjective: they explore an individual’s response to a film and so do not require research, analysis, and so on. As a result, reviews are often both simplistic (thumbs up, thumbs down) and “clever” (employing the pun-driven or sensational turns of phrase of popular magazines). While reviews can be useful and even entertaining pieces of prose, they generally don’t qualify as “academic writing.”
How do the specific cinematic techniques or elements of a film support the message or point it is making? As much as possible, choose the films and point out techniques in such a way as to make some general point about the way(s) in which a film exposes its themes.
Tips for Writing an Essay on Film
Mechanics
For any formal essay, you should follow the formatting guidelines of the professional style in the
field – in this case, MLA style. That means you should have
a heading (your name, the course, &c.),
a “header” (your last name & the page number, which you can add using functions under the Insert tab in your word‐processing program), and
 an original, relevant title.
 Avoid references to yourself or your thoughts/opinions – just state them directly.
 Avoid references to your writing (“I’m going to discuss…”) or your essay (“This essay is
about…”).
 Avoid references to your reader; avoid the 2nd‐person pronoun (you, your) altogether.
 Minimize references to the artists involved in the creation of specific techniques. It’s fine to name someone once (e.g., the director, the cinematographer, or the scriptwriter) if you happen to know who that person is. But don’t constantly say things like, “In this scene the director uses lighting to show….”
 Avoid references to the intentions of the film or its makers, like “The movie is trying to make the point that….” Again, just state those points directly, e.g., “The high‐contrast lighting supports the theme of the dark side of human nature.”
 Avoid references to the film’s audience, e.g., “The viewer notices that….”
 In all the above cases, just state your points directly – e.g., “The high‐contrast lighting in this scene symbolizes…” or “The expressionist style underscores the liberal message that…”
Content
Don’t just make broad generalizations about how great, how ineffective, how confusing, &c. the techniques are in the films that you’re using as examples. Instead, discuss in detail (while of course writing concisely) how the technique delivers its effect.
Finally and probably most importantly: You should have a central idea, a thesis, for the whole essay – an argument that is original, complex, relevant, specific, and debatable. Thus, instead of just sort of parroting my question and saying something obvious like, “The films we’ve watched in this class use a variety of cinematic techniques to create meaning,” you should try to narrow the focus to something specific – perhaps some pattern that you noticed from week to week, or some aspect of film that you found yourself particularly interested in as we went along.

Describe an example of a sample of this student population that would not represent the population well.

In real-life applications, statistics helps us analyze data to extract information about a population. In this module discussion, you will take on the role of Susan, a high school principal. She is planning on having a large movie night for the high school. She has received a lot of feedback on which movie to show and sees differences in movie preferences by gender and also by grade level.
She knows if the wrong movie is shown, it could reduce event turnout by 50%. She would like to maximize the number of students who attend and would like to select a PG-rated movie based on the overall student population’s movie preferences. Each student is assigned a classroom with other students in their grade. She has a spreadsheet that lists the names of each student, their classroom, and their grade. Susan knows a simple random sample would provide a good representation of the population of students at their high school, but wonders if a different method would be better.
In your initial discussion post, specifically address the following:
Introduce yourself and describe a time when you used data in a personal or professional decision. This could be anything from analyzing sales data on the job to making an informed purchasing decision about a home or car.
Describe an example of a sample of this student population that would not represent the population well.
Describe another example of a sample that would represent the population well.
Finally, describe the relationship of a sample to a population and classify your two samples as random, cluster, stratified, or convenience.
In your response posts to at least two peers, discuss the following:
Choose two different sampling methods from among your peers’ responses. Then, identify bias in each peer’s sample and explain how you think they could remove the bias from their sample.
To complete this assignment, review the Discussion Rubric.

What kinds of personal stories and experiences would you want to hear about to help you think through the topics in your research project?

SWA6 – Field Research: Conducting Your Interview for MWA 3

For this SWA, the goal is to keep you moving forward on your MWA 3 by helping you reflect on the best possible interviewees related to your topic, so that you can then plan and conduct your interview. First, if you are not familiar with how to set-up, conduct, record, and reflect an interview that you conduct, take a look at this PowerPoint from Purdue OWL.

Prep work:

Decide on a pool of possible interviewees. What kinds of personal stories and experiences would you want to hear about to help you think through the topics in your research project? Who do you know that might have experienced these kinds of things?
(Hint: don’t just think about who YOU know; instead, think about the people you know
and who THEY know. For example, you might not know a politician, but maybe your grandmother does. Those secondary connections can help you find a better interviewee that you might actually have access to.)
Go through the process of scheduling and planning your interview. The earlier you schedule this, the better.
Plan for how you will record the interview (you will need this recording for MWA 4, probably). You will NOT need to submit the recording. There are some newer interviewing phone apps to help you record and transcribe your interview, so maybe check out your app store. Otter is one recommendation. You could also just use the voice recorder that comes standard on all smart phones.
Put together your interview questions. The Field Research PowerPoint will help with this. Having excellent interview questions is the key to making field research useful.

For the written portion of this SWA, reflect on the interview by responding to the following:

Summarize the interview. For example, you might talk about who you interviewed, the questions you asked, and other such things.
What did you learn about your topic and the concepts you are researching for your MWA 3? What does your field research add to your understanding for your research project?
What was surprising from the interview?
How did you do with your prep work? What should you have done differently? If you didn’t get the information you really needed, do you need to conduct a follow-up interview?
Anything else you want to note about the interview and field research?
Be sure to use MLA formatting for this SWA assignment. Remember to format your response with a clearly and fully developed body. Refer to the sheet on D2L explaining my expectations and grading rubric for these types of writings before submitting your final draft. Also, remember to only use “I, me, my” pronouns when you are talking about personal experiences, so avoid “I think/ feel/ believe” kinds of statements; they hurt your credibility. “You” is almost always inappropriate in academic writing, so consider words you could use that are more specific and say exactly what you mean.
Include a Works Cited page for the interview in order to avoid plagiarism.
