What do you hope to learn from your peer research about teacher unions today and why?

Remoralizing or Demoralizing? Here’s what I want to know about the situation of Teacher Unions….
You’ll see in the readings for this learning module that joining a teacher union is no longer mandatory. Teachers today have decisions to make about whether to join their union and why. Teachers need to consider what will change about teachers’ work and teacher pay if teacher unions lose membership and power, and whether the demise of teacher unions would be good for the profession/ schooling in general.
This thread invites your initial thoughts on the question of whether teacher unions are a sign of a demoralized profession or a remoralizing one. This is also a good place to ask questions -no matter how basic or how probling) about the role of teacher unions, teacher support for and criticisms of teacher unions, and whether teacher unions public help or hinder the profession from garnering public support. What do you hope to learn from your peer research about teacher unions today and why?

Here’s what I want to know about Teacher Activism and Teacher Strikes
2018 and 2019 saw an avalanche of wildcat strikes across the states. This thread invites your questions about the strikes – what prompted them, what did they accomplish, what if anything was different about them. You can also ask your peers to share their personal opinion on the value and shortcomings of teacher strikes as a bargaining strategy. And you can tell them whether you would join a strike and ask whether they would persuade you to think differently about the issue. This is a good thread for us to take the pulse of the class on the deeply contentious issue of teacher strikes.

Here’s what I want to know about the experiences of Teachers of Color
Teachers of color feel demoralized within the profession, but they also hope to draw others to the field in the hopes of remoralizing their work, i.e. making a meaningful and appreciated contribution. This thread invites reflection on the sources of demoralization and hopes for remoralization via increased recruitment and retention of teachers of color, along with changes in the way teachers of color are viewed by colleagues.
This is a place to reflect on the experiences of teachers of color in general and African-American teachers in particular in U.S. schools. This thread also invites questions about what prompts teachers of color to join the profession, whether and why it matters for students to have a more representative teaching profession, and what would make the profession more inviting to younger teachers of color.
We can also use this thread to take the pulse of our class’s exposure to and experiences of racial diversity in the teaching profession. If you’ve been a teacher of color or if you’ve been taught by teachers of color, what do you want your peers to know about these experiences? If you’ve discouraged or encouraged a student of color to enter the profession – or if you’ve been encouraged or discouraged by others as a person of color – tell us what we need to know.

Here’s what I want to know about the effects of the Coronavirus pandemic on the teaching profession…..
Has the pandemic contributed to teacher demoralization or might it contain the seeds of remoralization? This thread invites reflection on the effects of the pandemic on the profession in the post-pandemic era. What would you like to know about the effects of the school shut downs on teachers, the job market for teachers (i.e. job security vs precarity for teachers), working conditions, teacher salaries, teacher attrition (turnover) and the future of the profession? What questions about the effects of the pandemic on teachers do you hope your peers will be able to help you answer based on their research?
Post 5 (1 page)
Here’s what I want to know about teacher demoralization …..
This thread invites your reflections on the phenomenon of teacher demoralization in general. Why might experienced teachers leave the profession early? Why might it be increasingly difficult to attract new teachers to the profession? Why are teachers of color particularly demoralized? What do you want to understand about these and other manifestations of teacher demoralization? What steps could be taken to counter the phenomenon of demoralization? For MAT students and other prospective teachers in the course: What worries you most about the prospect of entering a demoralized profession? For cultural foundations students in the course: how do we set about trying to understand and counteract demoralization in the work we do in our field?
Post 6 (1 page)
Here’s what I want to know about teacher remoralization….
This thread invites your reflections and questions on remoralization in general. What are some signs of remoralization on the cusp of the post-pandemic era? What would enable teachers to do good work in the moral sense? What steps need to be taken to remoralize teaching and teachers? What gives you hope for the future of the profession? What worries you about the future of the profession?
Final Post (2-3 pages)
Your final post to the course is an in depth analysis of how teacher demoralization and remoralization manifest in your chosen topic, and how you will navigate the tension between the two.
Your posts must demonstrate your understanding of issues raised by the readings below***
Your post should also indicate your position in relation to the issue(s) in question, i.e. what do you personally find remoralizing about your chosen focus? What do you find demoralizing?
For a shared context, we’ll all start with the following three shared readings/listenings/watchings:
1. Listen to the Edsurge podcast on Teacher Demoralization – or read the article here: https://www.edsurge.com/news/2019-11-19-many-frustrated-teachers-say-it-s-not-burnout-it-s-demoralization (you can access the podcast within the article also)
2. Read “From ‘Rotten Apples to Martyrs: America has Changed it’s Tune on Teachers” by Madeline Will edweek.org Sept 28, 2018 https://www.edweek.org/ew/articles/2018/10/03/from-rotten-apples-to-martyrs-america-has.html
3. Watch this short video “Perspectives and Reflections of Teachers of Color” about the Education Trust Report Through Our Eyes AND/OR this open letter to school leaders Teaching While Black.
4. Read this article about a new teacher who started her first year during the pandemic
4. Pop onto the Demoralized or Remoralized? Here’s what I want to know Discussion Board and post your reflections and questions on each of the four threads on that board. We’re interested to learn what you know about the issues we’ll be exploring in this learning module and what you’d like to know about them. This discussion board is worth 50 points, and must be completed by Tuesday night.
5. Then, choose one of the four focal topics for this week and read as many of the articles in the content folder for that topic as you need to in order to respond adequately to your peers’ reflections on how it reflects teacher demoralization and may or may not contribute to the remoralization of the profession. Remember Santoro’s definition of demoralization is not simply that teachers feel bad, but that they are no longer able to do good work.
The four topics are:
Teacher’s Mobilize: Teacher Strikes and the New Teacher Activism
The effects of the Janus decision on teacher unions
Teachers of Color Speak Out About the Profession
The Coronavirus Recession and the Challenge for Teachers

Arguement: Research Arguement. I need 3 things (seperate) Proposal, Annotated Bibliography, and Outline

PROPOSAL for Argument 2: Research Argument
DUE Friday, July 2 midnight
PREPARING the PROPOSAL
1) Make your preliminary choice (Make sure your issue is original, has a personal relevance). Do not choose bumber-sticker issues, such as gun control, abortion, global warming, drinking age, capital punishment even if you feel strongly on the issue. Why? Because it is hard to say anything interesting or original about it.
2) Research your issue using DMACC library databases and Google Scholar
Research Guides: DMACC Libraries: DMACC Library Home
Research Guides: DMACC Libraries: DMACC Library Home
If you need more tips on how to do library database reserach, study the resources in the folder Library Resources in this week’s folder.
WRITING the PROPOSAL
In your short proposal
1) Explain what issue you are planning to research. Respond to the question “So what?” (i.e., Why is the issue timely, relevant, debatable? In other words, why should we care? ) (200 words min)
2) Introduce preliminary sources you have found so far (3 sources min; 2–from library databases)
Here is a link to the library.
Just paste your proposal into the window. DO NOT upload a file.
MOST IMPORTANT: The proposal is due by Friday, July 2 midnight. I will give you feedback by Saturday July 3 midnight . After you get my feedback, you can continue working on your research and submit Annotated Bibliography and Developed Outline by next Tuesday, July 6 midnight
ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY and OUTLINE
ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY and DEVELOPED OUTLINE 30 points
After you receive my feedback to your proposal, you will start finalizing your research and thinking about the structure your argument will follow.
SUBMISSION format: Please submit as ONE attached file (one file for both Annotated Bibliography and Outline)
ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY 15 points
I expect you to cite at least FIVE secondary different sources. Primary sources (email or face-to-face interview, a survey) are not necessary, but will certainly add to your argument if they are relevant and smartly incorporated in the texture of the argument.
For this paper, I expect you to prepare an annotated bibliography: instead of a regular list of sources, provide short annotations (summaries) for FIVE of the sources you will use in your paper. After each MLA entry in Works Cited, provide a one-paragraph summary (5-7 sentences) of the article.
If you need to refresh your memory on how to write a summary, watch this video

You have done summaries in this class before, so this is just a refresher
Begin with the author, title, and thesis and/or topic. For example: In his interview ….. Joan Smith argues that in the 21 century, advertising acquired new forms
Reword the author’s ideas. Do not use any of the same vocabulary unless the terms are necessary to convey specific points. Not to reword is to plagiarize. If you use direct wording, use quotation marks. Avoid unacknowledged or excessive use of direct quotation. Instead of “Authors need to evaluate their ideas.” –argues Smith, say Smith argues that authors need to evaluate their ideas.
Include main ideas that support the thesis and capture the essence of the article.
Organize the summary to present the most important ideas first. You do not necessarily have to follow the structure of the original text.
Continue to attribute ideas to the author with the help of signal (tag) phrases: For example, “The article focuses on…” “In the essay, the author (or last name of the author) argues (compares, provides reasons for, describes, reflects on, contends, maintains…” The purpose of the essay is….
Check your summary against the original for accuracy, brevity, proportion, focus, and tone.
Revise where necessary. Insert transitional words (e.g., however, therefore, at the same time ) and phrases where necessary to ensure coherence. Check for style. Avoid series of short, choppy sentences. Combine sentences for a smooth, logical flow of ideas. Check for grammatical correctness, punctuation, and spelling.
The first time you mention the author, provide his/her first/last name and the title/affiliation of the author (if possible). Next time, the author is mentioned, you can just use his/her last name. Do not refer to the author by the first name (even if you know him/her personally).

Format to follow

Major Project Scenario

Major Project Scenario
During the course project, you have been analyzing teams within an organization that you chose at the start of the course. In Week 1, you evaluated the teams’ purpose, leadership, development, and dynamics. In Week 2, you constructed a values statement. In Week 3, you created a new virtual team, analyzing how to make it successful, and looked at decision making (DQ). In Week 4, you assessed the power dynamics in the teams. Along the way you’ve also looked at other topics such as conflict resolution and boundaries.
Building on your thorough review of the teams (and the organization through the lens of the teams), identify 4 to 6 challenges (i.e., problems, weaknesses, gaps, threats, opportunities for improvement, etc.) facing one or more of the teams and organization you have chosen for the final project.
Then, based on the knowledge you gained in this course, through previous course work, and through outside research, create a complete action plan to address the challenges you identified. Make sure you include the main concepts of the course and your weekly discoveries as you create and present your intervention action plan.
Consider the following questions as you are planning to make a sustainable difference in the team and organization:
What are the challenges that exist?
What systemic changes are required to make a sustainable difference for addressing those challenges? What benefit would the team/organization realize from the changes?
How would these systematic changes align with the overall organization design?
What are some potential consequences or impacts to the people involved? How would you reduce any negative impacts?
What are the action steps for the change process?
How would you lead this change process?
What internal team dynamics would you apply?

How does landfills effect the environment

For this essay you will complete the first part of the experiment process, which is to determine a research question, complete background research, and develop a hypothesis. Once you determine a topic, you must research the science surrounding your selected topic in order to create a hypothesis.
Then, write 2 page essay discussing what your research question/topic is, why you want to investigate it, your background research, and your hypothesis.
You will need to have at least 2 sources that give scientific information. Do not use sites such as Wikipedia or Yahoo Answers as sources. Make sure to include sufficient scientific detail from your research to explain why you chose your hypothesis.
Here is a checklist of the basics to help you progress. You do not need to turn in the checklist, but all components should be in your essay:
Topic/Research question
How does ______ affect _______?
2 sources of scientific information
Answers questions like: what causes ___? When does ___ happen? What is the relationship between ____ and ____? How does ___ work? Why does ___ happen?
Includes scientific vocabulary
Sources are reliable and relevant to the topic
Summary of research
Includes main ideas of the research
Includes scientific vocabulary
Supports or gives reasoning for the hypothesis
Hypothesis
Developed after completing the research
Has an independent and dependent variable
Predicts the relationship between the variables

Western CivILIZATION

Answer one of the following essay questions for 160 points. This is an open-book exam, which means I expect you to use your books and lecture notes to answer the following questions. I do not, however, expect you to use Wikipedia or other Internet shortcuts, including sites such as Chegg, Course Hero, etc. If you choose to do that and do not acknowledge your sources, you will receive a 0 for this exam. That included basing your work on someone else’s without acknowledging it. As always, using the pimary sources to support your analysis will improve your score. You should use footnotes to identify the sources you use and do your best to demonstrate that you have in fact read and understood the books by answering these questions in your own words. These essays, if well argued and written, need not exceed three to four pages.
1.) In the eyes of many historians, the nineteenth century began and ended with violent upheavals. For them, this “long nineteenth century” began with the French Revolution in 1789 and ended with the Russian Revolution in 1917. What did these revolutions have in common and how were they different? (What were the leaders of each trying to achieve, and who opposed their goals?) In what ways do these movements define the beginning and end of a century? (If this is the beginning and end of some sort of period or era, what made it one? What was different in a political or cultural sense about the centuries that preceded and followed it?) Which of these revolutions, in your opinion, had greater historical consequences and why?
Note: Using information effectively from the Lualdi readings to support your argument will improve your essay.
2,) Some historians have argued that the years from 1914 to 1945 define a period that was essentially a second Thirty Years’ War. (Please note that you don’t have to say much at all–if anything– about the Thirty Years’ War of 1618-1648 to answer this question.) In what ways, in your opinion, does it make sense to describe this period as one of constant warfare? In what ways doesn’t it? What were some of the key political and social problems that remained unresolved during this period? If religious tension was one of the driving forces durind the first Thirty Years’ War, what was its equivalent during the second one? What forces, ideologies or conditions produced these tensions? (To answer these questions, you should consider how the World Wars were related and how they were similar and different.)
Note: Using information effectively from the Lualdi readings to support your argument will improve your essay.
3.) Not long after the national unification of Italy and Germany, the nation-states of Europe began to project their power outward, colonizing new territories around the globe. We read excerpts of documents that both supported and criticized the “new imperialism” that began in the late nineteenth century. Which countries dominated this expansion? What sorts of arguments did imperialism’s opponents or proponents use to sway opinion? Whom were they attempting to convince? What consequences or effects did these ideas and arguments have in Europe and the colonies? How was life in the societies of the imperial powers and their new overseas possessions changed as a result of this process?
Note: Using information effectively from the Lualdi readings to support your argument will improve your essay.
Short Answer Section: (4x 10= 40 Points).
1.) In what ways was late-nineteenth century imperialism related to industrialization in Europe? Was industrialization the only factor driving “new”imperialism? When did the empires created during the nineteenth century break apart and why?
2.) Describe three of the main “causes” of World War I. Why was this war a pivotal moment for many Europeans? How did it change the map of Europe?
3.) Why was the Russian Revolution so important in twentieth-century history? What changed as a result? Why did the Revolution occur when and where it did? How did the Soviet system change under Stalin?
4.) What factors led to the emergence of Fascism, Nazism and Communism in Europe during the 1920s and 1930s? How were the programs and goals of the Nazis, Fascists, and Communists similar or different?
