Do you believe a firm must have a firm grasp of the concepts of differential cost, opportunity cost and sunk cost to be effective in making business decisions? Week 12: The Future of Biomanufacturing
For Week 12 please pick a topic related to the future of biotech that you would like to share and discuss. As usual you should have your initial post by Saturday of this week (earlier is always helpful) so that other can review your post and contribute.
Introduction
What do you think is the future of the business of biotechnology? In Week 12 it is your chance to lead the class discussion. During the first 12 weeks we discuss traditional and current processes used in the biotechnology industry. Through your readings and research you will have been exposed to many new ideas from which you can discern trends in the industry. What is the next big thing – it is going to be a geographical area, a new type of technology, a new manufacturing process, a new business model, or any combination of these? It is your chance to tell the rest of the class what you think is the most exciting development to watch for in the future business of biotechnology.

Each student in the class will identify a relevant discussion topic. Post your discussion topic in the discussion area as early as possible this week, 12. If you need some ideas here are some recent articles about current trends:

You may need to think about a first and second choice for your discussion because your topic should not overlap with any previously posted topic.
Please use the following guidelines in preparing and posting your discussion topic:

Background: what is the topic you have chosen? Provide some brief background information on it.

To familiarize everyone with case studies (the final assignment next week is a case study), we are going to practice with an older case study, looking at growth options for an Indian CRO. If this is your first time looking at a case study, I would suggest looking through some of the resources listed for the week 12 assignment (look under Content -> Assignments for Week 12 Case Study).
For this discussion please read the Biocon case study in this week’s readings and write your brief (<500 words) thoughts on the following questions: What are the advantages and disadvantages of starting and operating a pharmaceutical firm in India? Is the Indian CRO market attractive? What is the best way for Biocon India Group to expand, and what factors should it consider? You are welcome to use additional references for the discussion this week, but please note that for the written case study next week you should focus on the material included in the case study and exhibits and on the application of ideas from the class, and you do not need to use references beyond the case study. You must start a thread before you can read and reply to other threads

Research Project
Learning objectives:
be able to apply a global computable general equilibrium models to examine the impact of a trade policy and analyze the results;
be able to discuss the economic implications of several current issues in trade policy and relate them to the theories and models learned;
be able to think critically about the assumptions, methods and policy recommendations of current research, in order to justify decisions or identify areas for possible improvement
You are expected to simulate the impacts of some trade related agreement or trade related issue using a computable general equilibrium model.
Steps for the project: ( you just need to write a paper, the steps can help you understand how to write the paper better)
1. Use assignment 1 to help you examine the data of your country of interest and their trading partners. (I will update the file of instruction for assignment1, you don’t need to do it but it can help you to understand this paper better)
2. Decide on your aggregation and develop your mapping file. (I also upload the aggregation and instruction for mapping file and you can have a look)
3. Analyse the results and start to build tables for your report. Again some of the activities we will do in lectures will guide you as to what to look for in the results.
9. Run some sensitivity analysis simulations based on your analysis (don’t try to do everything, just pick something you think might matter and are interested in).
10. Write a draft of your report. Your report should contain: an introduction, literature review/background to the question/country (short), a brief description of the model used(GTAP model), a description of the scenarios and closure, an analysis of the results, a limitations and/or sensitivity analysis section, and conclusions. Appendicies can be used to include information on your data (usually on your aggregation) or other information you want to include that does not fit into the page limit.
