We will hold a role-playing debate set in the United States in early 1965, during the Selma Campaign. In a debate, you do not know ahead of time which side of the debate you will be asked to argue.
You must prepare to argue BOTH of these positions, as though you are a black person living in 1965:
Position #1) As a people, we should commit to nonviolence as we struggle for our rights within the U.S. Doing so will help lead to positive change.
Position #2) As a people, we should commit to the principle of self-defense. It would help lead to positive change.
Step 1: Submit Your Written Arguments (20 Points)
What to do:
Make sure you’ve submitted the notes up through Notes #16 before you start preparing for the Debate. Spend some time reviewing your notes, and the resources at the end of this document if your notes don’t feel like enough.
Think of who your 1965 characters are. It is fine (and logical) that you imagine a different character for each position. Think of how old your character is in 1965, and then use your notes to understand what that person had lived through and witnessed.
Compose at least six arguments for Position #1 and at least six arguments for Position #2. For each argument, remember that is it 1965, and you do not know anything that happens after 1965. Each argument must be at least two complete sentences. Sentence fragments will NOT be graded.
It may be helpful to include a brief description of who your character is, writing in the first person.
Example: I am a 19 year old woman, attending college or I am a 65 year old man from Alabama
Each argument must be at least two complete sentences. Sentence fragments will NOT be graded.

Persuasive/Argumentative Essay
Here we go, folks— Essay Cycle 3, The Persuasive/Argumentative
Essay. This is our biggest essay in terms of grade weight. The rough
draft is the same: 25 assignment-weight points. The final version,
however, is worth 30% essay-weight. Like I said in the beginning of our
time together, it’s the weightiest, but you are now ready for it to be
the weightiest— you have learned a lot over the past four weeks.
This is a formulaic essay— follow the formula;
Your thesis, which will come early in your first paragraph, will need to include your issue and position, plus a brief statement of your three support points.
If you look at the “Forms & Ideas” doc, you will see how this fits
in with the form, and how it effectively becomes the template for the
rest of your essay;
An argument must have at least two sides to it— for our
purposes, you cannot argue a fact, or something that no one actually
disagrees with. I recommend picking a large issues, as I did with the
model where I picked the legalization of marijuana in Georgia;
Just as in our last essay (Compare & Contrast), you cannot use the first person point of view, nor can you use opinion words and phrases.
Arguments are stronger if something is stated as a fact and not as an
opinion, and the ultimate goal of the persuasive/argumentative essay is
to persuade or convince someone to come over to your way of thinking;
You will need to find three-five unique accredited secondary
sources for this one. You will be arguing from three support points, so
basically you will use a source for each of your supports (example: in
the model, on of my supports talked about the additional tax revenue
legalizing marijuana would bring to Georgia– my source to provide
credibility for that argument was a financial expert from a state where
marijuana is legal);
You will not be graded on what you argue, nor the side
from which you argue (provided your argument has meet the
prerequisites). You will be graded based on the five domains of the
rubric (doc also found in the \LessonsEssay Cycle 3: Argumentative EssayDr. Cattie’s Argument Cycle folder.
You can do this, and you can do it well. We are born
arguers, folks– it’s as natural to us as comparing and contrasting, as
giving examples, as walking. Follow the requirements, don’t wait until
the last second to do the work, and you will be fine.

The Trolley Problem
Here’s your first discussion assignment for this week, a fun challenge that philosophers know as “The Trolley Problem”:
Consider the following scenario, “Going Deeper: The Trolley Problem”, from Chapter 3 of your textbook:
What if you could save five lives in a way that results in the death of a single person? If the overall consequences were the same, would it matter if you were intentionally harming that person or not? This problem is raised by the philosopher Philippa Foot (2002c) in her famous “trolley problem.”
Imagine that you are standing next to a railroad track, and a runaway train is careening down the track. In the path of the train are five workers (let’s suppose they cannot escape the path of the train; perhaps they are in the middle of a long, narrow bridge high above a ravine). You know that if the train continues on its path, it will certainly kill those five workers.
However, you see that there is a sidetrack, and on the sidetrack is a single worker. Let’s also suppose that you know that if the train goes onto the sidetrack, that single worker will be killed.
As it happens, you are standing next to a lever that can send the train onto the sidetrack. Therefore, you are faced with a decision: to pull the lever and send the train to the sidetrack, killing the one worker but sparing the five, or do nothing and allow the train to continue on its course, killing the five workers. [There is an interactive illustration of this in your textbook, so be sure to take a look.] Ask yourself, should you pull the lever?
Now consider this slight variation, also from your textbook:
Instead of standing next to a lever that can switch the train to another track, you are standing on a bridge overlooking the track, and next to you is a very large man (think someone the size of an NFL lineman – someone who is just big, not necessarily obese or otherwise unhealthy). He’s leaning precariously over the railing such that barely a push would send him over the railing and onto the tracks. Let’s suppose that he’s large enough to stop the train, thus sparing the five workers, but his own life will be lost. Let’s also suppose that you aren’t large enough to stop the train, so it would do no good to throw yourself over. Ask yourself, should you throw the large man over the bridge?
A. Write:
What would a utilitarian say is the right action in each of the cases? Give the reasoning by referring to Chapter 3 of the textbook, especially John Stuart Mill’s arguments found in this week’s reading, and be as precise as you can. Do you agree with that? Why or why not?
Do you find yourself agreeing with the utilitarian about the answer to the first scenario but not the second one? If so, explain what accounts for that difference. Does this point to objections, limitations, or flaws in the utilitarian approach? Explain.
