response essay

For the Response Essay, consider the identity of the very old man. Who is he? Is he an angel? Is he a lost sailor? Is he perhaps something that no one has identified in the story? Is he simply an old man with enormous wings?
What is your interpretation of this story? What do you believe Gabriel Garcia Marquez is attempting to communicate? Use examples from the story to support your claims and observations.

What roles do they perform in how males view manhood?

In Hossein’s Kite Runner, Hassan’s fate is obvious. Why? What has he done—what reasons are revealed—that inevitably result in the way society views him? One might argue that he has violated several of the social standards that define a rigidly prescribed sense of “manhood.” If so, what are they, and why do they result in the cruelty this character experiences? How does Amir’s guilt speak to his own betrayal of the masculine code? What role do fathers play? And why does the role of father—in this novel and beyond—seem to be so complicated? How does Emerson’s position on non-conformity speak to what happens in this novel? Is this Emersonian concept, one which was intended to be empowering, actually impossible to attain—at least without punishment?
Additionally, looking at the idea of masculinity, what is the true definition? Is it inevitably toxic? Looking at the two articles by Williams, do movements like #MeToo and Time’s Up signal a shift in the global power structure that has historically been centered on male supremacy? Are “being a man” and outwardly demonstrating “masculinity” concepts that inevitably endanger women? How does Newsom’s documentary speak to the need for change? What does Newsome reveal about how difficult the call to “Be a man!” actually is? Add Fight Club to this argument: What does maleness have to do with fighting? And why must men, according to the film, fight? In that same regard, how does the Emersonian notion of being “whole” play into this? How do those interviewed in Newsom’s documentary speak to the issues that Fight Club and Emerson bring to light? Blend into the argument the pain expressed from the males seeking answers in Claudine. Why is their struggle the same as the other films and essays—yet distinctly different?
How do all the examinations we’ve examined around “being man” speak to the world we live in today? Has anything changed? Are things better? Worse? Is the idea of “man” changing? Or is everyone just afraid of being “cancelled” and, as such, the history that has formed maleness and manhood will continue as it always has?
Make sure to include:
Throughout your essay’s argument, look at how the female characters are portrayed in the films, articles, and the novel. What roles do they perform in how males view manhood? Do they aid them or distract? Are they friend or foe? Consider the herd mentality/deindividuation and intersectionality: how do these sociological lenses alter the way we conceptualize the social call to “Be a man”?
Throughout your essay, determine what commentary the books and films make on manhood, and in what ways do these artistic interpretations define, alter, or shape the lives of the characters who are portrayed as irrevocably damaged.
Paper should weave source discussions that we have uncovered while researching these texts and films, including any laws, cultural considerations, statistics, and sociological/psychological/philosophical principles discussed.
Throughout the work, feel free to introduce any films or literature we have examined this semester that will support your argument.
Secondary sources—sources assigned/viewed this summer but not listed above—are required (at least six).
Paper must have quotes documented and cited throughout that support the writer’s argument.
Do not forget that the paper must conform to MLA’s or APA’s documentation style.
This paper cannot be less than seven FULL pages or more than ten (this does not include a title page or Works Cited/References page).
NOTE:
The design and development, the order and weight of the argument, is up to you, the literary critic. Keep in mind that everything listed above must be included, but the development and presentation of the material is the writer’s choice.
As writer, decide what the main focus will be for your paper. If, for example, Emerson or Fight Club or Claudine or toxic masculinity or religion or language is what you feel should be primary, just shift the perspective. Ultimately, everything must be addressed, but you decide what the essay will concentrate on—what the thesis will use as its primary source.
Do not attempt to simply answer the questions. The paper must introduce, defend, and conclude. There are a lot of questions above, but they will not and should not receive the same weight for our paper development. Our papers must develop an essay that has an introduction, a controlling thesis, defending body paragraphs with transition, and a conclusion.
Be aware:
Any paper suspected of plagiarism will result in an automatic F and be forwarded to the Division Dean. Papers that rate over 50% on SafeAssign will be thoroughly vetted
Unless the paper is well-documented and has appropriate citations throughout, any Safe Assign above 50% should not be submitted

What are the three biggest takeaways for your firm from this simulation?

From the due date assigned through the end of the week complete the team presentation as described below under team expectations and post by the end of the week.
By the due date assigned post individual investments.
Individual Investment Expectations
Each of the investors has $1,000,000 to invest. They will spend all, part, or none of their stake in your company based on your presentation—not necessarily on how you performed in the past, but on your potential to earn them money in the future. You cannot invest in your own company.
As an investor, you must post your “purchases” by the due date assigned along with the reasons why you are investing in the firm or firms you have chosen. You do not have to spend all your money but you must post an explanation as to why in this Discussion Area. Your instructor will add up the investments for each team and post them on the end of the week.
Team Expectations
Company Presentation to Potential Shareholders
By the due date assigned your company is to prepare a presentation for potential shareholders (the shareholders are the individual students in the class who are not managers in your company) and post the presentation to the Discussion Area.
Note: Presentations are best done using Microsoft PowerPoint but can also be done using Microsoft Word. Twenty percent will be deducted if your post is not a formal Microsoft PowerPoint or Microsoft Word presentation.
The company presentation is a brief review of the financial performance of your company during the time your team ran the company plus projections for the performance of your company for three years in the future (just like your three-year plans).
Start with the following charts:
Trends in the company’s total annual revenues
Trends in the company’s annual earnings per share (EPS)
Trends in the company’s annual return on equity (ROE) investment
Trends in the company’s annual credit rating
Trends in the company’s year-end stock price
Trends in the company’s annual image rating
As you know, when you launch the Decisions and Reports program, there is a performance summary containing bar graphs showing your company’s performance on each of the above six performance indicators. To create charts showing your company’s trends for these six indicators, simply click the Copy to Clipboard button under each of the bar graphs for the final year of the simulation and paste the graph on a Microsoft PowerPoint slide (or you can paste the six bar graphs in a Microsoft Word document).
Additionally, include the following slides:
A slide describing the strategic vision of the company.
One or more slides providing a discussion of a comparison of the firm’s stock price, EPS, ROE, price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio, income statement, balance sheet, and cash flow statement to a real-world sneaker company (Nike, Adidas, and so on).
A set of slides detailing the lessons learned about crafting a winning strategy and what the managers of a company should or should not do for the company to be financially and competitively successful in a head-to-head battle against shrewdly managed rival companies. Include the following information in this set of slides:
What was your team’s initial strategy, and how did it evolve over the course of the simulation?
What major change in the strategic approach would you make if you were able to replay the simulation? Why?
What information did you not have that you thought was the biggest limitation on your ability to make better decisions? Why?
What are the three biggest takeaways for your firm from this simulation? Why are they important?

Write a three-page essay convincing your reader about a debatable topic.

Write a three-page essay convincing your reader about a debatable topic. It’s best to avoid topics that everyone argues about all the time, and find something that you can advocate for or against, that is important to you. Choose a topic about which you care, and to which you can bring a new perspective. Search the Library resources and find information to support your point of view. Use an in-text citation to give credit within your essay to the source of the information. Include a “Works Cited” page at the end of your paper (page 4), and list the information about the Library source. Try to prove your point using your own knowledge, and knowledge you gained from reading materials from the Library.

Three full pages, double-spaced, one-inch margins on both sides, Times New Roman 12-point font. Your name and “Argumentative Essay” go in the upper left-hand corner.
