Week 3 Around the Web with Cognitive Psychology
100 Possible Points
This assignment is intended to enhance your ability to make connections between the course readings and “real-life” situations and the everyday occurrence of cognitive processes as depicted in popular media and professional research sources. This is your opportunity to express your thoughts succinctly and coherently. Be creative, but ensure that the reader is able to discern that you can critique the article/media source in a scholarly way that is related to course material. This is a great launching point as you begin brainstorming for the Week 7 Creative Project.
Assignment For this assignment, you are tasked with identifying a research article or reliable, popular media source (news segment, blog article, etc.) that focuses on a topic related to cognitive psychology, cognitive neuroscience, of a specific process or function we have addressed in the first three weeks of the course.
Upon identifying your select media option, you will draft a 5 to 6-page reflection paper, summarizing the media sources’ topic, and its relevance to our understanding of cognition and learning. Any topic discussed in our readings is fair game but needs to be clearly depicted in the source you chose.
In your submission, please be sure to clearly address the following topics:
Briefly describe the article/media source you selected (e.g. its plot, characters, themes, etc.).
This description does not need to be lengthy (the entire plot or process explained does not need to be explained; hit the high points).
Rather, the summary should be sufficient to demonstrate that you reviewed the article/media source and can convey the most relevant aspects as they relate to cognitive psychology.
Describe the cognitive psychology concept.
What does it mean in relation to your article/media source?
How do you see it displayed in the article/media source you chose?
What new information have you learned about cognitive psychology and how it is portrayed in the public eye?
Does the information portrayed in the article have broader implications for the field of cognitive psychology as it is presented?
Why or why not, and what might the effects be with changes or remaining the same?
Close your work with a brief, but succinct summary of the major takeaway points from your exploration around the web with cognitive psychology
Include a minimum of 5 to 6 pages, not including the required APA formatted required title and reference pages; submit APA style in-text citations throughout the work as well.
The basic parts of a paper should also be included; these are the opening, introduction section, with a precise thesis statement, the body of the paper with clear, discernable headings where appropriate, and a conclusion that restates the thesis and summarizes the major points of the entire paper.

What does the standard deviation tell you about the volatility of the data?
Assessment 3 Instructions: Applying Analytic Techniques to Business
PRINT
In the last assessment, you were asked to prepare the first part of your analytics report by creating graphs and calculating some descriptive statistics. In this assessment, you will write your 6-8 page analytics report by interpreting those graphs and statistics, and explicitly connecting those interpretations to implications in the practical business context.
The first step in creating meaningful information from raw data is to represent the data effectively in graphical format and to calculate any required statistics. The second step is interpreting and explaining those graphs and statistics in order to apply them in the business context.
In the previous assessment, you were asked to create the first part of your analytics report by preparing graphs and calculating some descriptive statistics. In this assessment, you will complete your analytics report by interpreting those graphs and statistics, and connecting those interpretations explicitly to implications in the business context.
In business and applied analytics, oftentimes you are interested in drawing conclusions about a population of interest. However, it may not be feasible or practical to gather data on the entire population. In those cases, data is gathered from a sample or subset of the population. Analyses done on the sample are then used to draw inferences regarding the overall population; this mathematic process is referred to as inferential statistics. In this assessment, we begin discussing the topics of sampling and drawing inferences.
All the inferential statistical techniques and methods covered in this course are considered parametric techniques and require certain assumptions to be used and for the results to be reliable, many of which are assumptions about an underlying distribution. Nonparametric techniques require no assumption about underlying distributions and are often used when the assumptions of parametric techniques are not met. Although these are beyond the scope of this introductory course, they are a great option for additional reading and research.
Analytics projects often result in two distinct types of reports or summaries: one tailored to the executive level, which takes the form of a presentation, and the other, a detailed analytics report, which documents an analysis so thoroughly that another analyst can reproduce the analysis exactly. Many times, the latter type is referred to by other departments or analysts wishing to conduct a similar analysis on similar data or by the same analyst who wants to repeat the analysis on a new or revised set of data. In this assessment, you will learn the essential elements that should be included in a report at this level of detail and you will create your own analytics report addressing the business problem you have been working on.
Scenario
Your supervisor has asked you to prepare a report for the quarterly company meeting. The first part of the task was to download the data and create scatterplots and histograms, and to calculate mean, median, and mode of the stock prices that you presented graphically in your report for the last assessment. This time your task is to analyze and interpret those graphical representations of the company stocks and to write a report about your findings for your supervisor.
Your Role
You are an analyst in the same business that you used for the last assessment. Your role is to turn data into meaningful information through the use of descriptive statistics and analysis.
After reviewing and integrating your instructor’s feedback on your previous assessment, complete the report as follows:
For each graph you created, write at least one paragraph interpreting the graph.
What does that graph represent?
What does the shape of the graph tell you about how the data have changed over time?
For each statistic you calculated, spend at least one sentence explaining what the statistic represents.
What does the mean tell you?
What does it imply if the median is different from the mean?
What does the standard deviation tell you about the volatility of the data?
Write a new conclusions section in which you explain how these interpretations can be used in the company:
What are some trends about which company leaders should be aware?
How might the information you have provided be used to inform business decisions?
How will you connect those interpretations explicitly to implications for the practical business context?
Create a 6–8 page report containing:
An APA-formatted title page.
A one-page introduction of your chosen company that you created in your previous assessment.
A section labeled “Graphical Representations of Data” that includes the four graphs you created as well as your interpretations of each graph.
A section labeled “Descriptive Statistics” with the statistics you calculated as well as your interpretations of the statistics.
A one-page conclusion in which you describe the potential business applications of the data and your interpretations.
An APA-formatted references page. Remember to cite the source of your financial data.
Example Assessment: You may use the following to give you an idea of what a Proficient or higher rating on the scoring guide would look like:
Assessment 3 Example [PDF].
Additional Requirements
Include APA-formatted in-text citations where appropriate.
Follow the typical double-spaced analytics report format.
Make sure your written communication is free of errors that detract from the overall message.
Evaluation
By successfully completing this assignment, you will demonstrate your proficiency in the following course competencies through corresponding scoring guide criteria:
Competency 3: Apply data analytic techniques to make inferences about a business need.
Interpret four different graphical representations of data.
Interpret descriptive statistics for two different variables.
Competency 4: Present the results of data analysis in clear and meaningful ways to multiple stakeholders.
Explain the business applications from the interpretations of the data.
Correctly format citations and references using current APA style.
Write content clearly and logically, with correct use of grammar, punctuation, and mechanics.
Note: Faculty may use the Writing Feedback Tool when grading this assessment. The Writing Feedback Tool is designed to provide you with guidance and resources to develop your writing based on five core skills. You will find writing feedback in the Scoring Guide for the assessment, once your work has been evaluated.
Identify a policy decision-maker who has some influence over the social problem you have identified.
Assignment Content
Policy advocacy is a key part of being a social worker. To get involved with policy advocacy, it is important to know who influences and determines the policies in your state or community. In this assignment you will prepare a communication to a policy-maker who determines policy related the social problem you identified in Week 2 to begin the policy advocacy process.
Research the social issue in your community, as well as related policies. Gather data to include in your communication.
Part 1: Policy Advocacy Communication
Identify a policy decision-maker who has some influence over the social problem you have identified. This person can be a decision-maker at the local, state, or national level. For example, a social problem that is related to the local educational system might be discussed with a school board member. A concern about funding for education might be addressed to a state representative.
If you had an opportunity to speak with this leader (in person or via email/phone/letter), what message would you share? What concerns do you have about the social issue, and do you have any proposed solutions to this problem? Time spent with this leader would likely be brief, so being concise will be important.
Determine the best way to communicate with this individual. Some examples include writing an email or a formal letter, or drafting a short speech that would be delivered in person.
Write a 700- to 1,050-word communication to the policy decision-maker in which you:
Identify the policy decision-maker. Include their name, title, contact information (email or phone number). Describe the level of influence they have over the social issue and what impact they have to make changes.
Introduce the social problem by discussing data from your community, and include the related policy (or policies). Use scholarly resources for this section of the paper.
Describe the potential solutions you would recommend to facilitate change in this area. What might this cost – either monetary or workforce power – be to the policy-maker or other stakeholders? Who would benefit most if this investment was made?
Part 2: Reflection
Write a 175- to 350-word reflection on your experience writing this communication in which you:
Summarize the response you would anticipate if you had the opportunity to share this message with the decision-maker.
How does communicating with decision-makers in this way contribute to the social work profession?
You can include Parts 1 and 2 in the same document.
Format your assignment according to APA guidelines.

What specific connection(s) does the article draw between your chosen health or relationship trend/issue and a trend/issue related to the larger world?
Explore the connections that exist between trends and issues that affect school-age children. To begin this assignment, choose one specific trend/issue relating to children’s health or children’s family/peer relationships. It can be one that you studied in this course (i.e. obesity, autism, ADHD, nontraditional family structures, parental relations, etc.), or it can be another children’s health or relationship trend/issue of interest to you. Locate a recent article or research study that draws a connection between your chosen health or relationship trend/issue and the larger world as it affects children, specifically technology/media influences or issues related to child poverty. After you have chosen the article, write a 3- to 4-page summary and analysis of the article that includes responses to the following questions:
What specific connection(s) does the article draw between your chosen health or relationship trend/issue and a trend/issue related to the larger world? Provide a brief summary.
Do these findings surprise you? Do they confirm what you already suspected? Explain.
What are the implications of these findings for practice in schools, homes, youth programs, etc.? Identify and describe at least two specific implications including at least one for professionals who work with school-age children in a setting of your choice.
Do you think further research is needed? If so, why, and what kind? If not, why not?
Explain how can fake and unsafe goods be sold on Amazon?
Watch this video about a WSJ investigation into unsafe products being sold on Amazon. Read the following two articles about how the U.S. is cracking down on counterfeit goods being sold online and how Amzaon is attempting to deal with the problem and respond after thinking about the following questions. You do not need to answer each question. You should provide a solid answer but leave some topics for others in the class to address.
Why doesn’t Amazon have the same financial incentive to keep counterfeit or unsafe goods off of its site in the same way that traditional bricks and mortar stores might?
What’s the difference between goods that are “Sold by Amazon” and those that are “Fullfilled by Amazon”? Does one provide more protection to consumers than the other? Why?
How is Amazon attempting to keep counterfeit goods off of its site? Do you think this will be effective? Why or why not?
How do you propose we balance our free market desire to provide consumers with as most choice as possible with our desire to protect intellectual property and to keep consumers safe?
How do you think the average consumer feels about buying counterfeit goods? Do they worry about the impact of intellectual property infringement or do they just want a cheap substitute?
REQUIRED: respond to one classmate’s post that has a different opinion than yours about any aspect of the “fake goods” debate. You will need to post your response first and then wait until after your classmates post to answer this part .
What led to your current perspective and direction?
RESPOND TO EACH DISCUSSION BOARD POST and ANSWER THE DISCUSSION BOARD QUESTION IN 1/2
PAGE
DISCUSSION BOARD QUESTION: Now that you have completed a series of assignments that have led you into the active project planning and development stage for your project, briefly describe your proposed solution to address the problem, issue, suggestion, initiative, or educational need and how it has changed since you first envisioned it. What led to your current perspective and direction? ***PLEASE NOTE THAT THE CAPSTONE TOPIC IS Handwashing: Soap and Water VS Antibacterial Foam, using them in a hospital-like setting to prevent infections
1. A cost we came up with was the cost of having a specific person that is responsible for the training and education process to help aid in the diabetes training. Additionally, the quality aspect is that there would be a higher patient outcome. When all nurses are properly educated, then they can properly educate the patient. Patient education is an important aspect of the nursing process. “There is also compelling evidence about the value of being sufficiently informed; a patient’s misunderstanding of a condition and its care can result in non-compliance to a doctor’s recommendations, significantly and adversely affecting outcomes” (2016). Lastly, the clinical aspect would be less patient numbers. This is because we currently see a high number from patient with diabetic issues that are preventable. When the numbers dissipate from preventable measures being taken, then our time and resources will go to those who need it most.
2. My capstone project is a virtual diabetes support group meeting that includes diabetes education.
One financial aspect that my preceptor and I identified from my capstone project are improved diabetes management behaviors can decrease the direct medical costs associated with diabetes. Diabetes education can also help to reduce the indirect costs related to diabetes, such as lost productivity due to the disease. In 2017, the American Diabetes Association (ADA) reported direct medical costs were over 7 billion dollars in GA. Another 3.1 billion dollars were spent on the indirect costs in GA. A quality initative for diabetes would be a plan to have preventive tests done, such as annual foot and eye exams or Hgb A1C every 3 months. A clinical aspect are the symptoms from hyperglycemia in diabetes: polydipsia, polyphagia, and polyuria. After DSME, patients understand how to use meal planning, medication, and exercise to manage hyperglycemia and symptoms.
3. Quality and finances go together because quality is increasingly linked to a hospital’s financial health, adverse outcomes related to inadequate staffing will have a growing impact on a hospital’s bottom line. The most direct example of the quality–finance link can be seen in the Center for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) Inpatient Prospective Payment System rules, which state that hospitals will no longer be reimbursed for any patient care needed because of a hospital-acquired condition. Many of these events directly related to EBP or influenced by nursing care. Many studies have shown that hospital-acquired events like postoperative infections, CAUTI’s, pneumonia, and pressure ulcers as well as CLABSI’s were preventable conditions that could be reduced with increased nurse staffing and following the EBP for these concerns (Serafim, Dell’Acqua, Castro, Spiri, & Nunes, 2017). Nursing is the single most important factor involved in patient satisfaction in every part of the hospital. My proposal to adequately provide cardiac patients and staff with the Pre-Stress test education and the importance of withholding caffeine and beta-blockers for an accurate diagnostic reliable test result. Many insurance companies will only pay for one per calendar year, whether normal or abnormal. This is the importance of adhering to proper test preparations for not only patient safety but the quality of patient outcomes. By not adhering to the education of patients and staff the results we obtain if not accurate could very easily cause patient harm and even death. The stress test not only shows if chest pain is reproducible but if there are any ischemic changes and can provide the likelihood of major cardiac events in the future.
