What do the selection criteria predict about an ability to successfully navigate hostage negotiations?

After reading the articles, respond to the following:

1. There are four historical events that informed the NYPD’s decision to create a unit that is specifically designed to address hostage scenarios. They are in the posted power point. List the four events, and provide a brief description of each event.

2. The mission of the HNT is unique in that its focus is on de-escalation; to save as many lives as possible at the scene of a hostage situation or a barricaded person (including the life of the hostage-taker). Part of this mission is avoiding use of force. Citing from the readings as appropriate, explain the selection criteria for who can be on the NYPD’s HNT. Why do these criteria exist? That is, what do the selection criteria predict about an ability to successfully navigate hostage negotiations? What personality traits might be a good screen-in for assignment as a negotiator?

3. When negotiators are deployed, they are responding to a scene that is already-in-progress. HNT is the negotiation side of the response, while Emergency Services Unit (ESU) personnel are also deployed to the scene as the tactical side of the response. Sometimes, there can be friction when the mission of the tactical side (looking to breech the door and make a tactical entry) conflicts with the mission of the negotiation side (taking a “time is your friend” approach). HNT’s mission is to preserve life; and letting “time be your friend” helps this mission. Why do negotiators want to take time at a scene? As opposed to making a tactical entry, why do negotiators prefer a “Talk To Me” approach of letting the negotiation take as long as it needs to?

What is the solution to our problems” we should draw from both psychology and theology/spirituality, rather than just one worldview perspective?

The Learn materials discussed the value of integrating psychology and our Christian faith in counseling. When you think of the area of human services counseling, per se, what do you think are the most important points made in the lecture that would encourage you to look for ways to use both psychology and theology/Christian spirituality in your human services counseling? Even if you work in a secular setting (such as a community mental health center) how can you utilize some of the elements of a “Christian” counseling approach (as defined in the lecture) in all human services counseling settings?
Put another way, how could you argue that in answering the question “what is the solution to our problems” we should draw from both psychology and theology/spirituality, rather than just one worldview perspective? In your answer, demonstrate that you are reflecting on solid concepts from the lectures; cite the lectures correctly as directed in the Discussion Assignment Instructions document.

Is speciesism the same as racism in the morally relevant sense?

Peter Singer introduces us to the concept of speciesism in
his All Animals are Equal. He says,

Racists violate the principle of
equality by giving greater weight to the interests of members of their own race
when there is a clash between their interests and the interests of those of
another race. Similarly the speciesist
allows the interests of his own species to override the greater interests of
members of other species. The pattern is the same in each case. (508)

Is speciesism the same as racism in the morally relevant
sense? Explain the role sentience plays
in his argument. Explain what role the
principle of equality plays in this argument.
Present and evaluate one of the objections to his argument that he
presents in his paper. Is Singer’s
response to that objection sufficient? Given Singer’s argument, how can anyone continue
to justify eating factory farmed meat?
Are they simply immoral hypocrites? How can one internalize the fact that Singer
is most likely right and yet still eat factory farmed meat? What is the requirement to acknowledge and
adopt sound philosophical arguments into one’s world view? Isn’t the acknowledgement and adoption of
claims that you know (or believe) to be true necessary in order to preserve an
internally consistent sense of self? Explain
why or why not.
