What is the value, if any, of a college education in a democracy?

English Composition II
Response Essay
Rationale
The purpose of a response is to enter into a conversation with texts or authors about which you have become knowledgeable. This is an opportunity for you to explain to your reader what you think about a proposed issue or argument.
You can approach the response in a number of ways—agreeing, disagreeing, or both—but you should consider that this assignment will build on the summary and rhetorical analysis skills that you developed in previous assignments.
In this paper, you will present a claim about the topic below; you will present reasons and evidence for your claim, and explain your claim’s relationship to the author(s)’s argument(s) with whom you’ve decided to interact.
The Topic
Your essay will pose some answer to this question: What is the value, if any, of a college education in a democracy?
You will present an original argument; your argument, evidence, and rebuttals will be comprised of any of the readings 1-8 in the module “Reading and Understanding Arguments”, the Readings in Democracy from the “Begin Here” module, or the Achenbach and Cohen articles from “Responding to Arguments” module. A minimum of two sources is required.
You are not required to use the articles you used for your academic precis or CCRA, though you may find it more convenient to do so. If you do choose to write a response to the articles you used for your previous assignments, you may use some elements of the summary or analysis you wrote to help introduce the article to your reader, but it should be well adapted to this project, rather than copied and pasted wholesale into your paper.
How do I respond?
While the choice of how you respond to your chosen essay is fully your own, I expect that you will use the conventions of responding to conversations that you read about the “Responding to Arguments” module.
You should also consider what we have learned about strong thesis statements and paragraphs organized by topic sentences.
Remember that you are writing to your own audience, so you should give them context of your argument before/as you articulate your thesis statement. Give them a “So what?”—why is does this topic matter? Why should they invest in reading through your argument?
You are required to incorporate material from the articles to which you are responding. You are welcome to incorporate other secondary research into this essay if you find it will help you make an effective argument, but it is not required for this paper.
Avoid logical fallacies (discussed in Module 8), or use logical fallacies in other arguments as a way “in” to the conversation.
Guidelines
Aim for a length of 1000-1200 words, double-spaced, TNR 12-point font. Any paper that falls below 1000 words will not be eligible for a B or an A grade. (Your Works Cited page is not included in the word count.)
Your essay should have an effective introduction that includes a clear thesis statement, as well as an effective conclusion that leaves the reader with a strong final impression of your argument.
Organize your essay clearly, and around topic sentences directly related to your thesis, so that it flows smoothly from one paragraph to the next.
Make sure your reader understands the difference between your words and ideas and those presented in the texts you choose to write about.
Use the MLA online handbook to help you properly cite, summarize, paraphrase, and quote the texts you choose to write about.
A minimum of two sources are required for this paper and they should come from readings you’ve been assigned in previous modules (see above).
Format
Your essay should adhere to MLA manuscript format. Any texts or other sources that you quote, summarize, or paraphrase should be cited.

What combination of at least 3 advertising appeals might be used in these campaigns?

Who are the target audiences of these campaigns?
What message strategy would you suggest for reaching these audiences? What would your message theme be? Why?
What combination of at least 3 advertising appeals might be used in these campaigns? Why do you think these would be the most effective?
Are there any advertising appeals that marketers implementing these campaigns should probably avoid? If so, which ones? If not, why not?
Given the target audiences, what recommendations would you make for spokespeople for these ads? Why?
Be sure that, in addition to answering the questions above, you fulfill the requirements outlined in the Syllabus and Rubric:
Make ties between what we are learning and (1) the real-world application of marketing and (2) marketing’s impact on society
Be sure to use correct terminology from class
Attempt not only to speak into the ether but to write in a way that fosters conversation
Adhere to the rules of grammar, punctuation, spelling, and capitalization).
Finally: Please make sure that your posts do not violate the Course’s Rules of Engagement (see the Syllabus). I am aware that people have differing opinions on Covid-19 and the vaccines. However:
I have chosen these articles to help you translate what you’re learning via the lens of a current event.
You will soon graduate from college; you should be able to have polite and professional conversations with people who see the world differently from you.
These posts are not about your personal opinions or beliefs; they are about how well you can utilize what you’ve learned to assess a given topic.
To that end, please attempt to stick to the content of the course as much as possible and always be respectful of other people. Students that make offensive, derogatory, or inflammatory posts will be removed from their group, forfeiting the Discussion points, and might be removed from the class completely.

Describe the social, behavioral, and cultural factors associated with this public health issue.

Overview
The final project for this course is the creation of an analysis and recommendations paper. Contemporary public health issues addressed by the social and
behavioral sciences include the prevention and treatment of alcohol and drug abuse, tobacco control, injury control, mental health, domestic violence, prevention of sexually transmitted diseases and HIV, adolescent health, communications, and grassroots political and community organizing. Effective solutions to widespread public health problems require the ability to plan, implement, and administer programs that take into account the actual factors that influence individual behaviors and reduce existing disparities. Both quantitative and qualitative research is used to inform program planning and evaluation.
For this project, you will analyze a public health issue that affects a community or population of your choice. You will also analyze the social and behavioral factors associated with the issue and make recommendations for specific changes in social and behavioral factors that will help improve the issue. You will use social or behavioral theories, concepts, or models to substantiate your claims.
The project is divided into four milestones, which will be submitted at various points throughout the course to scaffold learning and ensure quality final submissions. These milestones will be submitted in Modules One, Two, Four, and Five. The final project submission occurs in Module Seven.

Milestones
Milestone One: Topic Approval and Draft of Introduction
In Module One, you will submit your final project topic for approval and include a draft of the introduction portion of the final project (Section I). This assignment should contain an overview of the public health issue and target population you will be addressing in your final project. You should frame the impact that your selected public health issue had (or is having) on your target populations at a national and/or international level. At least two sources should be used for this assignment. This milestone provides the foundation for your entire final project. With future milestones, you will build upon the work you submit in this milestone. This milestone is graded with the Milestone One Rubric.
Milestone Two: Draft of Analysis
In Module Two, you will submit a draft of the analysis portion of the final project (Section II). This milestone requires you to expand your understanding of the public health issue you have chosen for your final project. You will demonstrate your deepened understanding of the issue by considering the cultural factors, local initiatives, state initiatives, and healthcare disparities associated with your topic. The milestone will help you establish a strong background of the issue so you can assess the theoretical framework that you will use as the basis for the rest of your final project work. It will also help you prepare for Milestone Three. This milestone is graded with the Milestone Two Rubric.
Milestone Three: Draft of Theoretical Support
In Module Four, you will submit a draft of the theoretical support portion of the final project (Section III). This assignment builds on the work you did in Milestone Two, as you will choose the theoretical framework you will use to guide the recommendations and reflection sections of the final project. In this milestone, you will determine and justify a factor to be considered for your analysis and recommendations. You will rationalize your choice by pulling in other research and support. In addition, you will address both the strengths and limitations of your chosen theory as it pertains to the issue you chose. This milestone is graded with the Milestone Three Rubric.
Milestone Four: Draft of Recommendations and Reflection
In Module Five, you will submit your draft of the recommendations and reflection portions of the final project (Sections IV and V). This assignment allows you to advocate for the health disparities you discovered in your analysis by providing a potential solution for the issue you discovered. The recommendations you put forth in this milestone will be substantiated with solid evidence. This milestone is graded with the Milestone Four Rubric.
Final Project Submission: Analysis and Recommendations Paper
In Module Seven, you will submit your final project. It should be a complete, polished artifact containing all of the critical elements of the final product. It should reflect the incorporation of feedback gained throughout the course. This submission is graded using the Final Project Rubric.
