Ivy League admission
I moved to the us a couple of years ago to pursue a higher education. I left my family (that raised me) and friends behind. I am from a single mother family, with low-income. I have an older sister that has a baby. I watch my niece sometimes and try to be a good example for her. My mother has alwas worked hard (day and night – nurse) to support our family, and she has always wanted and encouraged us to go for higher education because this will allow us to be stable in life financially and avoid us to be victims of a system where they abuse illiterate women. I am from Haiti.
I finished highschool in 2016, but I could not go to school because my mother could not afford my tuition. I have learned spanish in 2018. But, during this time I stayed at home, I mostly tutored the young kids of elementary school in my neighborhood to help them pass their classes, do their schoolwork.
Even though my sister is older than me, she counts on me. My mother, my little cousins and aunt, they all count on me. I would love to change my own reality and theirs. I am currently the first person in my family to be studying abroad, and I don’t want this experience to benefit myself only, but both my family and community as well.
I came here for a better education. I am a first generation student. And, few people in my country are educated, especially women. I want to be part of a growing generation where most of us are educated as this might trigger more positive and sustainable collaboration for change.
In the US, i attend a community college, and I will graduate in May. The new environment was a little strange to me as I was from a different culture. But, thinking of all the years I could not attend school, I did want to make the most out of this experience. The English was a little challenging, and this caused me to be scared to ask question in class. I got involved in clubs such as LGBT and straight alliance, Elite which is an anti human trafficking club. I was able to raise my voice again those social injustices/issues with these clubs. I want us to embrace diversity and respect each other’s choices and opinions. I was nominated as a Student Lead who is responsible of some new students and report concerns to my supperiors (dean). As a lead student, I guide students througout the college, help them navigate and locate the available resources, inform them about the extracurricular activities, where they can find scholarships, how to balance the classes when doing a schedule for the semester, where to go when they need something, and I listen to any possible concern they may have and work along my superiors to make a change. I have volunteered with lgbt organization outside of the college (still through my club membership). With the elite, we organized march against human trafficking on campus to raise awareness. I am an international student ambassador on campus. I am a tutor for spanish and french. I also help my peers in some basics college algebra exercises, chemistry, and statistics very often on campus. I have made new friends from my jobs and the clubs.
Last year, I participated in the Dance Spring concert of the college. Since i left high school, I have not been on a stage. and I was able to do one of the thing I love the most , dancing.
My intended major is psychology. I would love to establish a mental health institution in my hometown, and advocate for women emancipation and elimination of child labor.
PS: I don’t want to be the international student with lot of problems, but a growing world-class woman that has the capacity to transform things and that is ready to transfer to big league. my gpa is around 3.5, and I know lot of students with higher gpa will be competing.
