intersex/gender

How is knowledge about the body gendered; how does language shape this? How do ideas of sex and gender become somatic (relating to the body) facts? How do gender and identity develop? How and why has the intersex body been pathologized and medicalized in the western world? What are the causes and consequences of this? We’ve discussed how scientists are a product of culture and therefore scientific knowledge may be influenced by unconscious bias- how does this impact how the ‘social’ becomes material (aka ‘fact’)? And how does this frame the scientific and cultural narrative of the intersex body/ non cis-gender/heteronormative body?
What are your thoughts on biopower and biopolitics and how these systems intersect with human rights? Illustrate this with examples (either historical/contemporary) of laws and policies that regulate the human body and why.

Draw on the Fausto-Sterling, NPR, Gober and Tuana articles to support your response.

the ramifications of implementing ABC in the Global smartphone market, and
how you would structure the distribution of costs using ABC for Samsung.

Describe a place where you regularly purchase and/or consume food.

For essay 2, you will write an essay of at least 500 words and no more than 600 words in which you describe a place where you regularly purchase and/or consume food.

Examples of locations include H-E-B, a convenience store, a restaurant (fast food or otherwise), a farmers market, coffee shop, bar, and so on. If you work in an establishment that serves and/or sells food, you are welcome to write this from the perspective of a person working there.

Your essay should be unified with a thesis statement, which should appear near the end of the introduction paragraph. In this case, the thesis does not need to convey an argument but should present a unifying theme about the space and its purpose.
Rubric
In order to do well on this essay, you should:
Incorporate imagery and descriptive details to place the reader in the space.
Discuss the interplay between form/design and function/purpose of the space (example: the maze of the Whole Foods flagship or IKEA).
Describe the product(s) that you purchase and/or consume in that space.
Describe your observations of the space: Is it clean? Messy? Does it seem to be understaffed? Is it “user-friendly” (meaning signage and messaging are clear)? Is it warm and inviting or cold–or something else altogether?
Describe the demographics: Who else is in the space? Families with children? Or perhaps other college students? Elderly people? You get the idea.
Discuss other functions of the space. Does this space serve any other purpose, aside from being a restaurant/shop/cafe/coffee shop/bar? Is it a space to study, for instance?
Proofread carefully, eliminating all distracting errors.
Organize your ideas into coherent paragraphs and sentences.
Stay within the prescribed word count (You can go over or under by 50 words and it’s still okay, but no more than that.)
Adhere to MLA Document Design guidelines
And finally, you may use first person pronouns here!

RESOLVING ETHICAL DILEMMAS

Consider the ethical decision-making framework outlined in this week’s resources, including Figure 1.1 on page 439 of Kirst-Ashman and Hull.
Select one of the following options, and then engage in the first few steps of the ethical decision-making process, including consultation with colleagues through your response posts.
Option 1
As technology advances, so do the ways that social workers can connect with clients. Is it acceptable to look at a client’s activities on social media or seek information through an internet search? Should a social worker allow clients to contact them by text or e-mail? How does a social worker’s personal social media presence influence the worker/client relationship?
Option 2
Consider the presence of dual relationships in social work practice. What are examples of nonharmful and harmful dual relationships between clients and workers? How do social workers determine if dual relationships are harmful to a client?
Option 3
Your Instructor will post a social work ethical dilemma related to a current event.

Post a response to the following:
Describe a specific ethical dilemma based on one of the options above.
Describe the ethical issues in the option chosen.
Identify specific values or ethical standards that apply.
Identify who is likely to be affected by the ethical dilemma.
Describe potential courses of action.
Examine reasons in favor of or opposed to the course of action.Post a response to the following:

Intercultural miscommunication in The Spirit Catches you and you Fall Down

In the last section of the class we examined intercultural challenges. This assignment requires you to apply your knowledge to an encounter involving intercultural miscommunication described in The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down. Fadiman illustrates how Lia Lee’s family, and various healthcare professionals, encountered numerous verbal and nonverbal instances of miscommunication during Lia’s illness.
Select and analyze one of the cultural misunderstandings described in The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down.
Address the following areas. Please number each section of your response accordingly:
1. Briefly describe the context – the individuals involved and the general topic of the misunderstanding.
2. Describe the experience of Person A in the situation, using “I” to represent that person’s thoughts. Emphasize how they were acting in an appropriate way for their culture. Provide as much detail as needed to present the event clearly.
3. Describe the same misunderstanding from Person B’s (the other person’s) perspective, using “I” to represent that person’s thoughts, with an emphasis on how that person was acting appropriately for their culture.
4. Discuss critically some of the ways in which the two people were perceiving the situation differently, based on their cultural experiences. How did cultural differences contribute to the misunderstanding? How might a knowledge of cultural differences allow us to assess the event overall?
5. Discuss how you can apply the lessons learned from analyzing this misunderstanding to your own responsibilities as an intercultural communicator, and to any possible future interactions you may have within the area of intercultural communication.
This assignment should be five to seven pages in length, double-spaced. Please upload a Word document (see syllabus for format requirements). Please be sure to discuss relevant course concepts from Ting-Toomey & Chung (e.g. values and value patterns – Ch. 3; identity – Ch. 4; language – Ch. 6; nonverbal communication – Ch. 7; perception and biases – Ch. 8; etc.) throughout the paper.
Please cite Ting-Toomey & Chung (2022) and Fadiman (2012) in your paper. Include page numbers. In the last section of the class we examined intercultural challenges.
