This writing piece should cover these topics:

This week we are going to be thinking about intellectual property issues and copyright. Although we touch on many learning objectives, our main focus this week is the one which asks you to
Demonstrate an understanding of ethical, legal, and social issues surrounding plagiarism, copyright, and intellectual property
Lawrence Lessig is a US academic and activist most recently, an activist for political campaign reform. However, hes also famous for his ideas about the need for reforms to copyright laws, and is the founder of Creative Commons, which offers one alternative to copyright.
In this unit, well be watching a video where he argues that the current copyright laws suppress human creativity. Well also hear from Johanna Blakley, who argues that fewer copyright restrictions help the fashion industry thrive. We will also read a graphic non-fiction piece from Duke Law’s Center for the Study of the Public Domain which explores copyright law, including fair use and copyright infringement.
Consider carefully the ideas raised in these materials. Are our current laws which apply to intellectual property appropriate and necessary? Should they be scaled back or done away with? To what degree do alternatives to copyright like Creative Commons solve any problems you perceive with IP laws?
