Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS) can be
a devastating diagnosis for many people to be diagnosed with. Doctors identify
AIDS as having a CD4 count of fewer than 200 cells per cubic millimeter. Also,
they may diagnose AIDS if a person has characteristic opportunistic infections,
associated types of cancer, or both (Felman, 2020). Understandably, this
diagnosis is feared among Americans and people around the world. To have AIDS,
many times a person seeks medical attention when signs and symptoms of flu-like
illness display in their bodies such as:

Fever

Chills

Rash

Night
sweats

Muscle
aches

Sore
throat

Fatigue

Swollen
lymph nodes

Mouth
ulcers (HIV.gov, 2020).
These clinical manifestations
can be frightening for anyone to experience and seeking medical help is
essential in these situations. An estimated 1.2 million people in the United
Statesa had HIV at the end of 2018, the most recent
year for which this information is available. Of those people, about 14%, or 1
in 7, did not know they had HIV (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention,
2021). Characteristic finding to patients with AIDS may differ from patients
but the clinical manifestations will be similar upon initial diagnosis.
The symptomology the patient would exhibit are
several. Not everyone will have the same symptoms equally but they will vary on
the stage they are currently in. There are three stages of human
immunodeficiency virus (HIV) that the patient may exhibit.

Acute
HIV infection

Clinical
latency, where the virus multiplies, but at very low levels. People may not
feel sick at this time.

AIDS,
when the patient is HIV positive and is not on treatment, eventually the virus
will weaken the bodys immune system (et al, 2021).
These symptoms may complicate daily living and
relationships in various ways. First, complications of daily living may include
simple every day tasks that AIDS patient will voice they can not do. For
example, an AIDS patient will have an immunocompromised immune system; thus,
everyday chores such as cleaning their home, office, or coming in contact with
outside germs in grocery stores, shopping malls, or stores may be a difficult
task. AIDS patient may also express concern coming into contact with people who
may be sick with a cold or flu because of their weakened immune system.
Relationships may also be difficult with AIDS patients. They may find some
people may not be accepting of AIDS and will chose not to date these patients.
There are some social media pages for AIDS support groups and dating with AIDS.
These social media sites may be beneficial for patients to get to know other
patients with AIDS and develop a relationship if they choose to do so.
In summation, it is every nurses duty and
responsibility to appropriately and safely care for their patients. If the
patient voices their concerns to the nurse, the nurse must seek help or
assistance from ancillary staff in the hospital such as social workers or case
managers to assist these patients. Some may fear going to their place of
employment out of fear of people discovering they have AIDS. These patients
should have support when going out to the workplace.

opportunistic infections. Can you name some opportunistic infections, and the
pathology process with them for immunocompromised patients?

This chapter concentrates on the political history of the new nation as it enlarged its boundaries and solidified its independence. Starting with George Washingtons inauguration, the chapter explains how the founding fathers believed that the preservation of liberty and freedom for the republic relied on the success of the American experiment in self-government. Contrasting views as to how America should develop economically and how its government should operate emerged with the formation of Americas first political parties in the early 1790s.
