Creating the thesis statement:
Is your argument focused and meaningful in a way that it also offers a clear-cut, but debatable point of view, which a reader might either agree or disagree with? Avoid claims that are too obvious to the readersoffer them a new idea! Remember, a thesis also serves as a map for your essay, providing a promise of subtopics you will discuss in your body paragraphs in the order in which they appear in your essay.
Sample thesis statement: In The Midnights Shadow, Charles Bellingham begins as a lonely, self-loathing candle maker, but after he meets Miss Charmaine, begins working for the king, and takes an understudy, he transforms into a confident man who sees the townspeople and the kingdom as a friendly and prosperous community.
Developing the body paragraphs:
The way you present your supporting evidence is just as important as the evidence itself. When you create a body paragraph with the goal of supporting a claim in your thesis, you want to include a balance of research and/or examples with original material. In other words, original material refers to discussions you develop that help explain the connection between your research and/or examples and your thesis claim. You dont want to assume that your research and/or examples are enough to prove your thesisyou want to inform your reader how and why cited material serves the purpose you intend.
Therefore, begin each body paragraph with a topic sentence that affirms your opinion. A topic sentence for the first body paragraph in a paper with the thesis from above might say, Miss Charmaine, ever so charming in her ways, bumps into a scowling Mr. Bellingham, only to annoy him further, but as he slowly raises his gaze to evaluate the source of this unpleasantry, he is rather surprised to see a such a lovely creature affectionately maintaining his stare, eliciting an intrigue that serves as the first defining moment in Charles positive transformation. Next, follow up the topic sentence with more about this scene that serves as the defining moment. Then, spend significant time explaining how the events you just discussed prove your thesis. Finally, end the paragraph with a concluding sentence that synthesizes your efforts.
Compiling the conclusion:
Lastly, compile a conclusion paragraph that summarizes your findings in a new manner, using fresh language and perspective. Make sure to work in a restatement of your thesis statement (but not a repetitive version) as well as any other relevant ideas you present in the essay. You want your conclusion to read like new information but without actually presenting new arguments. In sum, synthesize instead of summarize.

Case 3
Date: June 22, 2005. A 27-year-old man is brought into a New York City emergency room with a 101-degree fever, and what he believes is chickenpox (Varicella). After a brief examination, the 35-year-old physician is puzzled because the pox does not appear to be typical of the varicella-zoster virus. Worried, he calls in another physician for her opinion. She takes one look at the patient, determines he has small pox, and immediately orders him to be quarantined. She notifies the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and asks them what should be done. While doing background on the patient, he tells the physicians that he is a flight attendant and that he has flown to Orlando, FL, Los Angeles, CA, Chicago, IL, and Seattle, WA in the past few weeks while working. Though he is given excellent treatment, and had been in perfect health a few days earlier, the patient dies 7 hours after admittance to the hospital.
The CDC decides that mandatory small pox vaccines will be administered to all workers in the NYC hospital, and to all patients who were in the ER. His co-workers are all given mandatory vaccines as well, as are all people living in his apartment complex. They also ship stored quantities of the vaccine to all of the cities where the man had flown to for work. The vaccines are offered to citizens of these cities. Finally, all people, along with their families who had been on the man’s flights in the weeks preceding the appearance of the disease are forced to receive the vaccine. The flight attendant was most likely given small pox by a bio terrorist who flew on his plane sometime during the past week and a half. The terrorist would have been contagious but would not have shown symptoms. Virtually every person the man came into contact with would have gotten the virus.
Is it ethical for the CDC to force people to get the vaccine?

Explain how the Courts Address or Respect Our Rights as Citizens – Outline. In Part I this week, choose a case from your state (FLORIDA) that involves civil rights or civil liberties that wound its way up to the United States Supreme Court. If your state does not have a case that ended up in the United States Supreme Court, choose a civil rights case from another state that ended up in the Supreme Court of the United States.
Here is a brief description of civil rights and civil liberties: Civil rights refers to equal social opportunities under the law. It gives you these freedoms such as the right to vote, the right to public education, or a fair trial, among other things, regardless of your wealth or race. Civil liberties mean freedom of religion, equal treatment and due process under the law, and the right to privacy.
You should be able to go online and look up your state (FLORIDA) and famous cases that ended up in the Supreme Court. For example, Brown v Board of Education (1951) started in Topeka, Kansas and ended up in the Supreme Court of the United States. Another example would be Calvary Chapel Dayton Valley v Steve Sisolak, Governor of Nevada (2020) that started in Nevada and ended up the United States Supreme Court.
Research your court case and write an outline of the case that you will be using to prepare a presentation, which will either be a narrated PowerPoint, a Kaltura Video, or some other format as approved by your instructor. Be sure to verify the presentation format with your instructor before starting work on this assignment.

In one or two paragraphs, provide a general overview of the case that serves as a snapshot of what the case is about and how it ended up in your state high court. Your court case outline should include:

The length of your outline will vary. Usually an outline is anywhere from 1-3 pages long. Make sure to write full sentences to explain your case. It is a concise list to be used as a reference for you during the presentation.
Using the outline, you will be describing the court case in your presentation and the scenario around the court case. The use of Wikipedia as a primary source of information is to be avoided – it is not a reliable source of information.
Search for an example of a case outline in the Internet. Without going into much detail at this state, each of the items listed above has a subject sentence with 3-6 bullet points that can help you expand on the topic.

I want you to identify an actual case where an organization/leader has experienced difficulties due to how he/she/they have handled issues related to diversity (e.g., NFL, FoxNews, etc.). Once you have selected your topic, you will author a 12-15 page case study that contains the following characteristics/components:
Your proposal must have 15-20 sources from relevant academic journals. Each journal article must be from 2005-current, and each source must be cited appropriately (using APA, 6th ed.) within the text and within the references. In short, when you watch a film or read a book and you ask yourself, “I wonder what that means” or “I wonder why that’s in there,” you’re identifying something in the work which could potentially have “multiple possible meanings.” Literary critics will sometimes call a work or aspect of a work “multivalent” – which simply means it has many potential meanings.
This is key: Where you identify something in a play we read that isn’t obvious – that when you ask what it means, you can imagine more than one possible interpretation – you have identified an interpretive problem. Learning how to articulate an interpretive question or problem about a play or poem or story is the first step to writing an interesting interpretive argument about it.
For example, take a familiar story like “Little Red Riding Hood.” She encounters a wolf in the woods. You could leave it at that. But you could also ask what the wolf symbolizes. Once you ask that question, you can see that there could be lots of potential answers. The wolf could represent the fear of nature (specifically of the woods). It could represent the child’s primordial fear of being eaten (lots of stories express that fear – think “Hansel and Gretel”). Or, as many people have suggested, it could represent more specifically the threat to young girls, especially the threat of male (sexual) predators.
NOTE what I did there: I identified something in the story that I thought was interesting problem or question, something people could disagree about when they discussed its meaning. NOW, let’s say I choose to argue the last option – the wolf is symbolic of a sexual threat. As an interpretive thesis, what does it do? It attempts to answer or solve the interpretive question or problem I raised.

A strong essay must have a clear and coherent argumentative thesis – a statement making an interpretive claim and reasons in support of that claim – that governs all that the essay includes. That means first, that your essay will be making an interpretive claim about the play, and second, that every paragraph in the essay will refer directly to that central claim.
In focusing on developing their theses, students should definitely avoid plot summary: assume your reader knows the events and characters of A Midsummer Night’s Dream or Twelfth Night. MOST IMPORTANTLY, any compelling and persuasive argument will be supported from start to finish with textual evidenceilluminating quotations introduced by and followed-up with analysis of their specific language.

How to Write a Paragraph with a Passage as Its Focus – the PIE Rule
1) PREPARE the reader: Articulate what you think an important concern of the play is and explain that the passage you propose to examine will illuminate that concern. You need to contextualize the passage by explaining who is speaking and in what situation.
2) INSERT the quotation into your paragraph, making sure its syntax coheres with your own and that when coupled to your prose, it works grammatically as a complete clause or sentence. (If you read it out loud as part of the paragraph, does it sound right to your ear?) Dont quote incomplete sentences unless you complete them; dont leave out crucial parts of a quote that make it hard to say who is doing something or what someone is doing.
3) EXPLAIN what’s happening in the quotation that you think is significant. Offer a few interpretive sentences about the passage you just quoted, paying close attention to its images, its phrasing, and its specific word choices. Explain how it illuminates the concept you articulated in your first sentence.
