This weeks assignment of reviewing, reading and learning of the important aspects in research ethics was very beneficial and helpful! I really enjoyed reading about the various history topics and evolvement of ethics over time. I would say that learning of the history of ethics impacted my view by expanding it and heightened my thoughts regards different views. Learning to appreciate and then implement different view of ethics, values and morals in our daily practice is so important. I would say the most beneficial and impactful topic I enjoyed reading about was The Nuremberg Code (of 1947), in regards to respectful practices and medical ethics overall. According to further research, it is known that the importance of nurse involvement in informed consent (also known as IC in research) is pivotal. The key parts of IC are tied to patient education, advocating for our patients as well as quality time spent with patient/being available for questions, and finally ethical adherence to standards (Regan, 2018). I feel as though this made a significant mark in history, showing how people should not be treated! What these people (prisoners) endured was cruelty at its finest, and is such a learning opportunity for us future practitioners now. In regards to voluntary consent, we understand this now as absolutely necessary-but unfortunately only due to the sacrifices that people like this had to make for the greater good!
After reviewing and considering the studies chosen for my PICOT questions I strongly feel as though the researcher adequately consider and then protect human rights. It was very evident to me in all of my studies actually, that careful consideration and precaution was utilized in obtaining consent from the patients. Furthermore, in most of my studies I read that not only was effective and sufficient explanation given to patients prior to participating, but also extensive explanation to the patients about the study, its purposes etc. This was very beneficial to the study in that it allowed the reader to see the study as non-bias, fair and equal.
Great week overall, and honestly very helpful!
