What communication skills would you like to learn or improve on in order to create a supportive communication climate?

Communication Climate
Communication is the grease which makes relationships in organizations run smoothly, and by extension, directly affects the effectiveness of the organization itself. Communication climate refers to the mood or tone of interpersonal communications and determines in great part how people feel about each other and how they carry out their work activities. Thus, communication climate has a great deal of influence over the organizational climate or general atmosphere of the work environment. Read the following blog about what it is like to work in a defensive climate:
Dukes, A.J. (2012). Defensive v Supportive Climates in the Workplace. Retrieved from http://scom320class.blogspot.com/2012/07/defensive-v-supportive-climates-in.html
As you can see from this blog entry, defensive climates create a situation where employees do not raise work concerns or communicate their needs. They are careful about what they say and guard their opinions. Frequently they exhibit low motivation.
Supportive climates, on the other hand, encourage employee participation and engagement, an open exchange of information, and constructive conflict. Employees who work in supportive environments often exhibit greater organizational commitment, an attitude cited as highly desirable in Module 1.
The Communication Climate Inventory was developed as a means of measuring the degree of supportiveness and defensiveness in an organization. For this SLP, take the inventory and score your organizations communication climate using the scale below. Take the Communication Climate Inventory.

SLP Assignment
Compose a 2- to 3-page blog like the one you read for this SLP, describing the climate in your organization, department, or team. Do not use the actual name of the organization you can make up a pseudonym. Include the following in your description:
Is the climate supportive or defensive? Does this align with the results of your Communication Climate Inventory? Attach your Inventory results as an appendix. (Note: This appendix requirement will likely increase your papers Turnitin similarity score; your professor is aware of this.)
How does the communication climate affect motivation and organizational/team commitment?
How could you improve the communication climate in your organization, department, or team?
What communication skills would you like to learn or improve on in order to create a supportive communication climate?
Be sure to support your analysis with concepts and principles introduced in the background readings on communication as well as conflict and teams (if appropriate). You may also incorporate outside research to supplement the background material. Cite all sources properly.

Describe what the recommended assessment measures and the assessment process.

Read the scenario below and prepare a PowerPoint presentation that you would use to make your recommendation to Grace.
The Scenario:
Your good friend, Grace, knows that you are taking this class and has come to you hoping you can make a recommendation. Grace has recently been promoted to be a manager of a small group of bank tellers. Its very important that the tellers work together as a team. In addition, tellers are also expected to sell additional bank services to customers. For example, when making a deposit or cashing a check, tellers should ask customers if they would be interested in applying for a credit card or making an appointment to speak with a financial advisor.
Grace is concerned because she has noticed that the tellers seem to get frustrated with one another and dont seem to work well together. In addition, most of the tellers seem to struggle a lot with the sales aspect of the role.
Grace has a number of ideas related to how she might motivate her new team, but was also thinking about using some type of assessment tool to help her better understand her new team and help them better understand themselves and each other. The tellers like the idea of taking a self-assessment and sharing their results, but Grace does not know what assessment would be a good fit and would like your recommendation. Because of the limited time available, she will only be able to have the tellers take one assessment.
Your PowerPoint presentation should:
Assume that Grace is your audience.
Provide a recommendation to use one of the assessments we have studied so far in this class (i.e., StrengthsFinder, FIRO-B, People Styles, MBTI) that you believe could help Grace and her team.
Include a brief restatement of your understanding of the situation.
Explain which assessment you are recommending and why.
Describe what the recommended assessment measures and the assessment process.
Provide guidance for Grace when administering, interpreting, and using the results – linking your guidance back to Graces reasons for wanting to use an assessment (i.e., improve teamwork and improve sales).
Describe any other factors Grace should consider in using the recommended assessment.
Use the Notes section to narrate the presentation you would make to Grace. That is, write out what you would say related to each slide as you presented your recommendation. You may also choose to record audio with your slides.
IMPORTANT NOTES:
There are no right or wrong recommendations. Any of the assessments discussed in this class could be used to address at least some aspect of Graces concerns.
Be sure to cite references/sources throughout your presentation.
Next week you will post your completed presentations and discuss them in the Week 6 Discussion Board.
Requirements for this presentation:
The length of this presentation should be 10-15 slides

Discuss the characterization of the protagonist in these two stories (A dip in the pool) and (The secret life of Walter Mitty).

Discuss the characterization of the protagonist in these two stories (A dip in the pool) and (The secret life of Walter Mitty). Consider their similarities, their differences and their overall complexity. Do you find them to be sympathetic characters? Why or why not?
Note: a strong analysis requires direct quotations and citations from the original source and must go beyond naming their qualities.
I will provide you with the PDF file of the secret life of Walter Mitty but please go to the internet and search A dip in the pool. These are the 2 stories that we need.
