HPM Peer Critique
Objectives
Peer critique is a vital skill for working within teams. Specific to policy, peer critique’s allow you to identify well-developed and articulated opinions and the ability to produce effective dialogue.
Objective(s):
Understand the skills required for peer review in scholarly writing and advocacy efforts.
Understand and apply peer review as an essential part of the writing process and advocacy efforts.
Apply concepts learned and demonstrate the peer review process in the HPM Critique Assignment.
Relationship to Learning Outcomes
As future Advanced Practice DNP leaders and Nurse Scientists, you will be working in collaborative teams where peer review is a part of the workplace environment. In this assignment, we are utilizing peer review to develop your ability to provide useful feedback. This is also an opportunity for you to receive feedback on your own draft, which should help you refine your own policy memo prior to submitting the final draft.
Assignment Rationale
Now that the HPM drafts are in, you will review a peer’s submission. This review will be done by a Peer Review Table, which is commonly used when you have a manuscript that has been accepted for publication. Once accepted, the journal’s editor will return your paper with a table that has the first column completed. You will then have the opportunity to review each of those suggestions. You will then provide a justification of why you did or did not agree with those comments. If you agreed, you would then show how you made the appropriate changes. We are going to mimic that process.
Peer Review Overview
The peer review process is not just a requirement in this course. Throughout this program and in your professional career, peer review is an essential part of the writing process that all successful writers engage in at some point. This practice is an integral part of refining scholarly writing to become an effective writer in your academic and professional fields.
The process of producing academic and professional writing involves the following three steps: drafting, revising, and editing. Peer review is most helpful after a completed draft is produced and there is still time to make substantial changes. As a writer you can learn from peer-reviewers areas of strength in your paper, parts that need clarification, gaps in logic, or unanswered questions. The purpose of peer review is to help determine which parts of your paper are effective, and which are unclear, incomplete, or unconvincing.
Active engagement in the peer review process is an opportunity for you to learn how to write for an audience and prepare you for work in the professional world. The quality of your ideas and your work will be judged by how well you can communicate in writing to diverse audiences and stakeholders. Thorough participation in this peer review assignment will help you and your peer shape your written language for effective communication with readers. You will gain the skill to construct a convincing argument by anticipating and answering counter-arguments that readers might pose. This is an important skill when enacting aggregate and systems-level change. Objectives

3. You will also complete the first column of the Peer Review Table with at least five suggestions. Please note: You are responsible for both editing your peer’s paper and completing the table.
4. Once your peer review is complete, it is to be uploaded to the HPM Drafts and Critiques Discussion Board.
Rubric
Brain Disorder (Alzheimer Disease)
General Instructions
You will write a paper on a brain disorder
Format requirements
• Minimum Length: 5 pages, not including the title page, references, or any figures/tables/appendices you wish to include
• Maximum Length: 7 pages, not including the title page, references, or any figures/tables/appendices you wish to include
• Spacing: double-spaced
• Font size: 12-point font, Times New Roman
• Margins: 1-inch margins left, right, top and bottom
• Formatting and citation style: APA 7th Edition (you should include a cover page
1. Introduction and Epidemiology: Please introduce your topic area and discuss, for the disorder, its prevalence (US, Worldwide or other – be specific) and incidence, and any relevant variation in prevalence and incidence (e.g., gender and age differences).
2. Symptoms: What are the primary symptoms of the disorder? Don’t just list them – explain them. How is the disorder diagnosed? Who makes the diagnosis?
3. Etiology: What is the current thinking about the disorder’s etiology (cause), particularly with respect to the brain? Is there a genetic component? Are there interesting environmental components or gene x environment interactions?
4. Cognitive Neuroscience Findings: What are some relevant cognitive neuroscience findings for the disorder? Cognitive neuroscience in this sense is broadly defined to include any field of study combining mind/behaviour and brain. You will lose points if you only discuss neuroscience findings or if you only discuss cognitive findings. Relevance includes application to the etiology of the disorder, its diagnosis, or its treatment. It could also be how the disorder has changed our understanding of Cognitive Neuroscience, or a combination of these meanings. Findings that count would include EEG, MEG, fMRI, TMS, PET or other imaging strategies, or traditional lesion type approaches (e.g., neuropsychology).
5. Treatment and Course: How is the disorder treated medically and/or psychologically? Concentrate on the best practice, or standard of care, even if that standard is not adequate. If the usual treatments for the disorder are ineffective, are any new treatments on the horizon that are informed by Cognitive Neuroscience? Alternative approaches should only be considered if you can tie them logically to the underlying neuroscience of the disorder. What age is the disorder usually diagnosed? What is the disease progression, if any? What is the outcome, with or without treatment?
Please use these exact five headings (without the colon) in the order listed here. You will lose points for not including these exact headings.

TOPIC: Reaction Paper: Ancient Versus Medieval Sources of Metaphysics
Following the procedure and format of Reaction Paper 1, write an evaluative comparison of the general metaphysical views of ancient sources with medieval sources as particularly represented by Augustine, Anselm, and Aquinas. Note that the reaction paper could mean a philosophical reflection, a summary of topics taken, and a personal evaluation on what was covered from Unit V-IX. Kindly recheck the criteria for assessing a reaction paper in the syllabus and course expectation as posted at the Content Board.
You must build your essay through the following points:
1. After reading the article “Medieval Philosophy” from the web, Stanford Encyclopedia of philosophy and reviewing what we have learned from the ancient (Greek) sources of metaphysics (Summary and Reflections), explain the sharp contrast between the Ancient/Greek philosophy with Medieval Philosophy in general.
2. Compare the views and methods used by the Greeks thinkers (Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle) with the Medieval thinkers (Augustine, Anselm, and Aquinas) regarding their view on reality, nature and existence of God, immortality of soul, human nature, etc. Review the content of Augustine’s Confession, Anselm’s Proslogion, and Aquinas’ Summa Theologica as excerpted in the textbook.
3. Evaluate by stating in your own words the positive and negative views which you discovered from both Greek and medieval metaphysics. Which of the two metaphysical sources would modern culture prefer to take as a good standpoint for explaining issues regarding nature of reality, human nature, existence of God, problem of evil, etc.?
Benchmark – Middle Childhood Development Interview
For this assignment, you will find and watch an interview of a parent with a child who has a disability or special needs. As an example, watch “Parent of Child with Autism Interview,” by Moni U, located on YouTube (2017): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NfMWrlDZdI0. Include the link to the video you found, when you submit your assignment.
Next, write a 1,200-1,500-word paper, include additional questions you would have asked in a “Q and A” format and conclude with a summary analyzing theory and concepts from Chapters 11-13.
Your paper should follow the outline below:
Cover Page
Paragraph #1: Introduction: Describe middle and late childhood, the background of the disability or special need, and statistics of children affected by this disability, along with a purpose, and thesis.
Paragraph #2: Type of Disability: (Using Chapter 12)
Paragraphs #3-5: Analysis of the Interview: Did the interviewer ask for the background of the interviewee and their child including demographics (e.g., age, ethnicity). What additional questions would you have asked?
Paragraph #6: Piaget’s Theory of Cognitive Development: Discuss which stage of development the child falls under. Offer specific examples.
Paragraph #7: Processes of Development: Discuss the cognitive, biological, psychological, and social factors to be considered. Was the child on track with their milestones? What impact did this have on the child socially and on the family?
Paragraph #8: Resources: What local community resources does the family have for support? What kind of faith-based support does the family have or how has their worldview been impacted by their current situation.
Paragraph #9: Conclusion
Note: American Psychological Association (APA) ethical guidelines indicate that interviewees have the right to refuse to answer any question posed to them by an interviewer. Please ensure that your interviewees are aware of this, and do not force them to answer when the opportunity to reply has been refused. Notate refusal to answer and move on with the interview.
Include at least four scholarly sources. Your textbook may count as one of these. A Sample Outline has also been provided as an additional resource.
