Year 11 Engineering Studies – Assessment Task 2

Design Brief: (COMPLETED IN-CLASS)
An Engineering Company has contracted you and your partners to design a Ship Crane as shown below, that operates using ONE hydraulic system. Part of your preliminary investigation is to design and test a working model of your design and this will be the scope of this Engineering Report. The crane must be free-standing and not anchored or fixed to the deck of the ship.
The working model needs to fulfill the following criteria:
Lift an object of 100 g using a simple hook.
The device’s hook must start at a height of 135 mm from the table.
The object must be lifted vertically at a distance of 120 mm.
The object must be lifted from a point at least 200 mm away from the pivot point.
The robotic arm must be made of Craft Sticks, Plastic Straws, Masking Tape, Pipe-cleaners and ONE hydraulic system.
The hydraulic system must be made from TWO different-sized syringes and clear tubing.

The mechanical advantage of the whole system, using the maximum weight achieved.
The velocity ratio of the whole system.
The efficiency of the system.
The moment of your system is at maximum height with a weight of 100g, work out the effort required.
What input force would be required if the mass was 550g? Do this calculation backwards through the whole system using Moments and Pascal’s Principle.
Engineering Reports – A general format
Engineering reports provide engineers with a means of communicating the results of their work to colleagues, clients, supervisors, and the general public.
The format may vary depending on the type of report, but generally engineering reports are written in the third person and may contain the following sections:
Title page
The title page gives the title of the report, identifies the writer or writers, their company or organisation and the publication date.
Abstract (2 paragraphs max)
The abstract is a concise summary of the content and purpose of the main report. Its purpose is to provide enough information for readers to decide if the report is relevant for their needs.
A brief conclusion and/or recommendation is generally included in the abstract.
Introduction (2 pages including diagrams max)
The introduction provides the subject, purpose, and scope of the report and its plan of development.
The introduction may also contain theoretical or historical background material based on research of technical literature and other appropriate areas.
Methodology or procedure (2-4 pages including images and diagrams)
The methodology or procedure section gives a detailed account of the steps taken to accomplish the work described in the study or investigation.
In reports of experimental investigations eg. preliminary testing.
5. Results (2-4 pages including images and diagrams)
The results section describes the outcomes of the project or investigation, including the behaviour of the model during testing.
This section of the reports normally contains figures and tables, as well as a description of the results or findings.
Calculations and drawings are usually shown in an appendix at the end of the report, but referenced in this section.
5. Conclusions (1 page of writing including diagrams)
The conclusions are the deductions or inferences drawn from the factual evidence of the report.
Conclusions generally report on the design alternative found to be the best overall and make any further comment that seems appropriate regarding the result.
6. Recommendations ( 1-2 pages including diagrams)
The recommendations section states a recommended course of action based upon the conclusions. This would usually include modifications to the original design or an alternative design would be illustrated.
An explanation of the reasons for the changes and the expected outcome would also be included.
7. Acknowledgements (1 paragraph)
The acknowledgements section recognises those people and organisations who have made significant contributions to the project.
8. Bibliography and/or References (1 page)
The bibliography lists the books, journals articles and other references used in the preparation of the report. In technical reports, a list of cited works is usually headed ‘References’.
9. Appendix (4-6 pages)
The appendix is where all referenced calculations and drawings are located for readers who wish to see technical details related to the study or report.
