The haves and the have nots have been woven into American society for centuries and philanthropy has been the fabric in creating classism in America. Do philanthropic dollars create classism and dictate how the other half lives? The history of classism in philanthropy shows that the top percentage of Americans dictate how money is allocated to help those who are less fortunate but rather than assisting with economic and social change, their lack of research in areas to fund is causing more damage. The basis for this discussion is the U.S. Supreme Court case of Burwell v. Hobby Lobby Stores, Inc.

This case is about a business’ leadership making real business decisions about employer-provided employee health care benefits. This decision violated a government mandate that private for-profit businesses provide certain types of birth control benefits. The company, Hobby Lobby Stores, Inc., took a stand against the government’s position, based on the business ownership’s religious beliefs, raising a Constitutional question under the First Amendment.

In addition to the Hobby Lobby case itself, please consider, in particular, the Horwitz article listed in your Required Readings, as well as other research on the subject, to inform your own thoughts on the following points. and discuss in a narrative post.

What are the constitutional implications on business exemplified by this case? How was the 1st Amendment involved? How was the government violating Hobby Lobby’s 1st Amendment right, according to the U.S. Supreme Court?
Hobby Lobby Stores. Inc. is a family owned business, described as “closely held.” What does this mean, i.e., what is a closely held corporation? Did this make a difference in the court’s consideration of Hobby Lobby’s 1st Amendment religious freedom argument? Would the same argument work for a large publicly held corporation like IBM? Should it? Why or why not? What are the social and political interests in play that the Court endeavored to balance in the legal setting?
Should a business be able to invoke the 1st Amendment protection at all on the basis of the business owner(s)’ personal beliefs as human beings? Why or why not? If the business is a separate person, as the Court has held in finding that the business has an independent Constitutional right, how can this “corporate person,” as an entity, manifest an independent religious belief? (For this question you might want to also take a look at the Supreme Court’s opinion in the Citizens United case.)

On page 320 and 421of the textbook, you are introduced to The Global Reporting Initiative (GRI). While European companies have embraced sustainability reporting much quicker than companies based in the USA, most public companies are now reporting in some way, shape or form, how they treat the planet, people and profits.
The GRI has decommissioned the Sustainability Data of Reports. You have to research (google it) a company you are interest in and find the GRI sustainability report. Read the report of at least one company and identify at least ten metrics used in reporting the entities responsibilities to Planet, Profit and People. What are they measuring? Do you think there is any “green washing” of data in the reports?
Write up your observations of your search and identify and define what you found. Add your voice and your opinion on the subject of sustainability and the ethics of sustainable reporting.
Requirement 1: Search for a GRI report on sustainability reporting for a US public company of your choice using Google. Read the report.
Requirement 2. Find at least 10 metrics that they report on that pertain to People, Planet and Profits. Identify and define what the metric measures and what was reported.

Earlier this year, on the weekend of my 20th birthday, my little cousin was shot and killed by her friend. It was really hard for my family and I since she did not have life insurance. So unfortunately, I had to work double my usual hours at work during finals week to contribute to her funeral. This was not the first, but the fifth death I have dealt with during my time at Xavier. It is so hard for me to admit, but it was easier to say bye to my uncles, aunt, and cousins than it was for Nariah. I am 10 years older than my sister and 19 years older than my brother, so Nariah was the closest thing I had to a sister close enough in age to give me comfort and advice. She was going to graduate high school this past May, and attend Xavier with me to follow my footsteps in becoming an attorney. For days, I could not even believe that she was actually gone, and sat in my dorm crying all day. I could not bathe, I could barely eat unless I binged and ate too much. All I did every day was go to work, do delivery services like DoorDash and Postmates for extra money, handle everything that needed to be done for my resident assistant position, and try to hold myself together. Thankfully, I reached out to one of my managers in housing and she brought me to the counseling center at Xavier. I met with her two to three times a week, let my family and friends know how I felt to share the burden of grievance, pushed myself to study for my finals, and found small things in life I was grateful for. Day by day, I progressed and allowed myself to express my emotions and cry when I needed to. I ended up working hard enough to contribute to Nariah’s celebration of life and ended the semester meeting my academic goals. I am much stronger than I was before
and am capable of thriving because I now know the value in reaching out and allowing myself to get help when I am in need.
