Understanding how to manage the operational budget to ensure the viability of the department and ultimately the financial success of the healthcare organization is a responsibility of healthcare managers. This week, you will analyze the operational budget of Sunnyside Nursing Home. Your analysis will include the impact of patient volume on revenue, staffing, and quality of care. New programs at the nursing home need a marketing plan to attract patients, as patient census and a steady volume improves the proportion of payroll costs year over year and secures jobs for the employees. You will have the opportunity to update Excel spreadsheets, fill in staffing data, and reflect on the financial outlook of Sunnyside. You will then develop a PowerPoint presentation to summarize your financial analysis and apply the concepts we have covered over this course. This Assignment will give you experience with managing a healthcare budget.
Consider the following scenario: Sunnyside Nursing Home is an independent 200-bed nursing home in a community in southern New Jersey. The average daily census for the nursing home was 140 in 2015, 2016, and the first half of 2017. In late 2016, the nursing home became licensed to provide in-patient hospice services, which has been quite successful. In 2017, the nursing home started marketing their hospice services, with an average census of 10 patients and, in July 2017, finally saw an exponential increase in hospice utilization.
The Assignment is composed of two parts, and both must be submitted. Be sure to submit the PowerPoint presentation as the first part and then upload the Excel spreadsheet as the second part of the Assignment.

Throughout the course of the semester students will practice the following 3 listening and reflection exercises provided and journal about their experience. Journals should be a minimum of 3 pages and should also address how listening and communication skills discussed in class could be applied to their scenarios.

As a trusted person to help you practice your listening skills. After a conversation with this person, summarize what you believe you heard and reflect feelings you heard. Ask the person for their responses in how well you heard what they were trying to communicate. Then reflect on your experience such as what was distracting to you, were you thinking about something else while they were talking, were you worried about your response, etc. What habits do you think would help you be a better listener?
Listen to a song you like 3 – 4 times, each time try focusing on one particular instrument. At the end of the exercise, reflect on your experience. Were you able to stay focused, were you able to avoid distractions, what kind of thoughts were on your mind, how were you able to overcome distractions?
Find a friend or family member to engage in conversation with. Ask that person to tell you about something going on in their life while you practicing listening for a minimum of 3 minutes without interruption and without distractions such as music, phones, etc. Reflect on what it was like to stay tuned in, how long did the 3 minutes seem, where you suppressing things, you wanted to say, did you find yourself wanting to give advice, what were any “consequences” of being focused for that long (i.e. missed phone calls, low frustration tolerance, boredom, etc.

The paper must be in APA format. No abstract needed. It must be a minimum 4 page paper, it must be 4 pages of content. You must also include a summary/conclusion and reflection page in addition to the 4 pages of content. Focus the interview on the use and value of project measures and metrics beyond the triple constraints. The interview should focus on what metrics are typically used by the company in their project monitoring, quality plan, customer satisfaction, and alignment to business goals and strategy. Also, explore the success – or lack of success – that has been experienced by the company in using these metrics, and any areas for potential improvement.

Because it can take a good deal of time to find a willing interviewee and schedule this interview, an early start to the assignment is advised. Students are also advised to plan for the interview in advance with some prepared questions to take full advantage of the time they provide.

Students will write an APA-formatted 6 to 8 page paper, plus title page, abstract, and references page(s).
