Even though Binti takes place far in the future, there are still conflicts and problems similar to those in our time. However, I would argue that one of the key intentions of the novel is to suggest different approaches to addressing/solving those problems. In my reading, Binti suggests that many of the standard or traditional ways of dealing with serious social issues are not productive; rather, the novel suggests that–in order to make social progress–people must think differently, feel differently, act/behave differently, and even (in the extreme) to become something altogether different. According to the novel, the old ways are failing and we must respond with new ways of thinking, feeling, acting, and being.
In this essay, I want you to explore the lessons that Binti is trying to teach us about how to approach long-standing social problems. In doing so, your essay should respond to two related sets of questions:
According to the novel, what do we need to change about who we are and how we relate to the world if we want to make that world a better place? What do we need to do differently?
How can you apply at least one of the lessons from Binti to a social issue that seems urgent in our own world? How might Binti guide us to think about differently or act differently in relation to a social issue that is important to you?
This means that you will do two different (but related) things in this paper:
You will analyze the novel Binti and show the reader how it teaches us lessons about how to make the world more just.
You will apply at least one of those lessons from Binti to an issue in our own world that matters to you. You will describe this issue in some detail (including why it is serious and difficult to solve) and will then apply the lesson(s) from Binti. In discussing this issue, you may choose to use one or more outside sources (though this is not required).
REQUIREMENTS
Quotations and Sources. In your essay, you will need to include 4-5 quotations (no more than that without my permission). At least three of these quotations must be from Binti. You may choose to quote from an outside source (but it is not required). You must cite all of these quotations accurately in MLA style and include an MLA-formatted Works Cited page.
Thesis and Body Paragraphs. This is a thesis-driven essay, so a strong thesis is essential. Your body paragraphs should demonstrate clear grasp of PIE paragraphing strategy and quote sandwiches.

An important part of any organization’s priorities, as well as an important category of B Corp Certification, is the consideration of added value for customers. In this assignment, you will apply what you have learned about customer expectations and consider how it can be applied to your course project, which is due in Module Seven.
Prompt
You work in the operations department at NationaliTeas, a large international corporation that manufactures and sells tea worldwide. Based on customer feedback and a push to work toward B Corp Certification, the board of directors is looking for new initiative ideas that would increase value to customers. Examples include offering product guarantees, seeking product quality certifications, monitoring customer satisfaction, and so on. You have been asked to outline two customer-focused initiatives that can be evaluated by impacted teams for feasibility.

This research paper is an analysis of an artwork or architectural structure that is an example of either appropriation, transculturation or reuse, and guided by an argument.
Recall from the lecture videos and the assigned academic essay by Ashley and Plesch that these terms refer to different processes. Loosely defined, they are:
1. “Appropriation” is the process of taking a well-known image/artwork holistically and using it in a new way as part of a new form. The original meaning/associations
still exist and are, in fact, lending the new form its meaning. An example of this from our textbook would be Andy Warhol’s Marilyn Monroe screenprints (1967), figure
3.18, or the example of my neighborhood Greek restaurant taking the Roman Doric order for its entryway and sign.
2. “Transculturation” is the process of merging and creating a new form from two distinct cultures/sources. The original meaning of each is lost (and sometimes cannot
even be detected) because the new form becomes an original in itself. Most examples of this can be found in places with a colonial history. An example of this is the
Mexican muralism movement we examined. Pre-colombian cultures painted murals, and Hispanic colonizers adapted this practice to teach Christianity, then muralism
developed into the artistic style of the independent Mexican nation, with an aesthetic that spread around the world.
3. “Reuse” or “Recycling” is the process of transforming cultural artifacts as raw material into new cultural forms. The original artifact is simply used as an existing
material, and it properties are recycled and reused into something that has a new function and form. An example of this from our textbook is El Anatsui’s Sasa (2004),
figure 3.34, or “spolia,” bits of architectural recycling done in the Roman and Medieval periods.

In interviews, one of the questions most often asked is also one that is surprisingly difficult for people to answer articulately: “So, tell me a little bit about yourself.” For your first speech in CIS 110, you will be telling us all a little bit about yourself by delivering a self-introduction speech. This speech will be more personal and less formal than an interview response, but you will still want to think about what you want your audience to know about you.

In this journal assignment, you will consider how myth influences the lives of people in modern times. Keep in mind that myth began with oral storytelling and then evolved into other forms of literature such as poetry and drama.
As children, the first stories we heard were told to us, and most of those stories were fairy tales, which are closely related to myth. These tales had many repetitive aspects—think of “Goldilocks and the Three Bears.” You also learned songs (which are poetry set to music) with repetitive lyrics. Authors such as Dr. Seuss use repetition extensively. Myths were originally told with such repetitive aspects because this made them easy to remember.

For this journal assignment, choose a tale that you heard as child and, after giving a brief summary of the story, reflect on the following questions:

How has the “moral of the story” in these tales affected society as a whole? (Think of the princess who needs to be saved and the qualities of the prince who saves her.)
How does hearing a story differ from reading it? (Consider voice inflection and, in the case of totally oral traditions, how the tale might change according to the teller.)
