1. Critically examine TWO television characters that portray child behavior that could be considered abnormal. Provide details about the behavior of interest, including how other characters react to it, whether it strikes you as normal behavior being pathologized, or abnormal behavior being normalized. 3. Describe the positive or negative qualities of the portrayals of these children/characters. Say whether stereotypes about abnormal behavior are being used deliberately by the producers or writers and what effect, if any, they are pursuing.
You must include the following indicators of abnormality and discuss every single one of them.
1. Subjective distress: If people suffer or experience psychological pain we are inclined to consider this indicative of abnormality; however, although subjective distress is an element of abnormality in many cases, it is neither a sufficient condition nor even a necessary condition for us to consider something as abnormal.
2. Maladaptiveness: Any behavior that is maladaptive for the individual or toward society (e.g., anorexia); starving oneself is maladaptive.
3. Statistical deviance: The word abnormal literally means “away from the normal.” Also, just because something is statistically common or uncommon does not reflect abnormality (e.g., having an intellectual disability, although statistically rare, represents a deviation from the normal).
4. Violation of the standards of society: All cultures have rules. Some of these are formalized as laws. Others form the norms and moral standards that we are taught to follow. When people fail to follow the conventional social and moral rules of their cultural group, we may consider their behavior (e.g., the Amish of Pennsylvania not driving a car or watching television).
5. Social discomfort: Not all rules are explicit, and not all rules bother us when they are violated. However, when someone breaks a social rule and then those around this individual experience a sense of discomfort or unease (e.g., you are sitting in an almost empty bus and then someone comes and sits directly next to you).
6. Irrationality and unpredictability: People are expected to behave in socially acceptable ways and abide by social rules. For example, if someone next to you started screaming and yelling obscenities at nothing, this behavior would be viewed as unpredictable, disorganized, and irrational.
7. Dangerousness: This represents someone who is clearly a danger to himself or to another person.

Media have a profound influence on shaping the ways in which we see ourselves and others and how we interact with others. Sometimes the representations of individuals and groups are accurate, but more often than not, the representations aren’t fully accurate and may, in fact, be based more on stereotypes than reality. The lens through which each of us views ourselves and each other is based on our position and privilege or conversely, our lack of privilege in society and because of various aspects of identity – race, gender expression, age, income, ability, disability, chronic illness, religion, etc. Given that media consumption is the number one leisure activity and that media have such a profound impact on us as individuals in society, this assignment will provide you with an opportunity:

analyze and discuss the relationship between media consumption and leisure.

Purpose: The purpose of this assignment is to practice understanding a point of view different from your own. When we are able to approach knowledge with the humility to wonder, “What if I’m wrong?” we are better equipped to hold our beliefs with greater complexity, compassion, and empathy.
Instructions: Revisit your “Here I Stand” selfie video transcript. Read the section where you anticipate the objections to your own point of view. In this assignment, write – as best you can – a passionate “Here They Stand” script for the other side. Give every effort to making the opposing view as strong and supported as possible. Use the three criteria of justification (experience, testimony, logic) to take as strong an opposite view as possible.
Be very careful not to create a “straw man” argument. A straw man is an intentionally misleading or misrepresented depiction of another argument. For example, if I disagree with evolution, a straw man argument is that evolutionists “believe that we evolved from monkeys” (no evolutionist ever made such a claim). Instead, be rigorous – do your best – and give as strong an argument for your opposition as possible. Write between 600-800 words, and cite your sources.

For this assignment, students are required to demonstrate their knowledge of DSM-5 criteria and their ability to collect, consolidate, and critically analyze information about a “celebrity patient” in order to formalize a report of the patient’s diagnosis and treatment recommendations. Students are to choose a person of distinguished status (e.g., a celebrity) whom they believe has/had one or more clinical disorder(s). It is recommended that you choose someone who may be personally intriguing to you in order to enhance your interest in this assignment. For ethical reasons, students may NOT choose themselves, a friend, family member, or anyone else that the student is personally familiar with or a member of the local community. Given that this is a learning exercise and diagnosing persons can be a most sensitive matter, and that information about “famous people” is accessible in the media, etc., students should limit their assessments to “celebrities” or like distinguished persons. Moreover, students are REQUIRED to list a disclaimer at the top of their report, for ethical reasons, indicating that “this report is fictional, that the evaluation conducted never actually occurred, and that you are not formally or professionally qualified to conduct such a psychological evaluation.”
After selecting a “celebrity,” students are required to research background information about that person (e.g., family, social history, occupational history, clinical/medical history, etc.) from as many resources (e.g., biographies, newspapers, popular magazines, websites, etc.) as possible in order to substantiate the diagnosis and treatment recommendations that you will make about the celebrity. Admittedly, students may need to supplement the information researched with their own speculations and commentary (i.e., your discussion of their presenting symptoms, reason for referral, and current behavioral observations will likely be information that you will make up BUT which should be congruent with your diagnosis) about the celebrity, however documented information should be the primary resource where possible (i.e., background information, etc.). Students are required to submit a “report” to the instructor as if the student is the clinician diagnosing the “celebrity.” The report should include the following information:
Reason for the referral (i.e., why are they coming to see you? What is the problem(s)? This can be made up but should be congruent with their diagnosis);
History of the presenting complaint (How long has the person had this problem(s); How is it currently affecting the patient’s life?);
Relevant family, social, and/or psychiatric history that has contributed to his/her condition (Only include history relevant to the person’s condition; autobiographical information that has no bearing on the person’s psychiatric history or current condition(s) should NOT be included);
Clinical impression and diagnosis according to the DSM-5 criteria; and
Treatment recommendations based on your diagnosis and the patient’s history. Specifically, you should comment (1) which professional(s) you would refer to for treatment (e.g., psychologist, psychiatrist, etc.), (2) describe (based on research evidence you will need to find/provide) how the professional(s) would proceed in order to build/enhance a therapeutic relationship with the client(s) and evidence for its importance, and (3) what specific therapy(s) the professional should apply to treat the person?
To assist and guide students with the organization and content of the report to be submitted, an example/template report students should adhere to in format and organization can be found below (note – this template does not include citations and references — which are expected/required in the assignment).
Students should write their report in the first-person (i.e., as if you are the clinician/diagnostician and actually conducted the evaluation), but they should (1) cite the resources they used in the text/body of your report (i.e., so the instructor knows where you obtained the information you used) and (2) list the reference for each citation on a “References” page attached to your report. Citations and references should conform to APA-style, 7th edition.
