Annotate the novel, writing questions and comments in the margins. Ideally, you should read the
novel once, and annotate the novel upon a second reading. Annotations consist of TWO PARTS:

Ironically, at a time that American managers are moving more towards more positive, employee-empowering approaches to motivation, technology has allowed for ever-closer monitoring of employee activities. In a recent article titled “Snooping Bosses,” Time magazine pulled startling data from some recent studies: nine out of ten employers observe your electronic behavior; 76% of employers watch you surf the Web; 36% track content, keystrokes, and time spent at the keyboard; and 38% hire staff to sift through your email. The article also cites more extreme examples. A new product called HyGenius can detect restaurant employee handwashing and soap usage. A security firm in California installed specialized GPS systems in company cell phones to alert the boss if workers strayed from their territories or drove too fast. And at an Ohio firm called Citywatcher, some workers volunteered to have ID chips embedded in their arms.
While these examples are somewhat extreme, technology consulting firm Gartner claims that 60% of companies will have implemented formal programs for monitoring external social media by 2015 (e.g. your personal Facebook and Twitter accounts). According to a senior VP of Gartner, “employers will continue to pursue greater visibility of social media conversations held by employees, customers and the general public when the topics are of interest to the corporation… Security organizations are beginning to see value in capturing and analyzing social media content, not just for internal security surveillance, but also to detect shifting threats that might affect the organization. These might include physical threats to facilities revealed through postings, or planned attacks by hacktivists.”
Clearly, there are powerful arguments both for and against employer monitoring of workers. Here are some of the issues to spark your thinking:
In favor of monitoring:
Increased surveillance of employees can mitigate risks for businesses.
Monitoring workers can increase productivity and decrease waste.
Against monitoring:
Employers could use even “innocent” information in an illegal/discriminatory way (e.g. membership in certain groups could lead to age or nationality discrimination)
Employers could use offhand comments unfairly (e.g. “I had a terrible day” as evidence of a bad attitude)
Workers who know they are being watched probably behave quite differently.
Personal data in the wrong hands (untrustworthy managers, or lost or stolen) could become a personal threat to employees.
The feeling of violation from being watched could hurt worker-management trust, which could undermine morale and motivation

Defining exactly what “right” and “wrong” are can be very difficult because it varies from person to person based on their personal morals, values, and how they were raised. There can be a slightly different definition of right and wrong in the business world versus peoples personal lives, but generally they do relate to one another. The course textbook mentions the term moral philosophy and defines it as “the specific principles or values people use to decide what is right and wrong” (Ferrell, 2017). The difference in moral philosophy and business ethics is that moral philosophy relates to a persons personal values, while business ethics relates to what the group as a whole considers right and wrong. With this being said, we can relate the two to a more generalized “definition” of right and wrong. Although it does have some loop holes, the Golden Rule is often referred to when deciding right versus wrong. The Golden Rule states that we should treat others how we would like to be treated. An article that I researched on this topic stated “the fact that so many diverse movements hold this principle in high regard reflects both its simplicity and the self-evidence of both its truth and worth” (Beard, 2019). As stated, the Golden Rule does have some loop holes, but generally it can be applied to business or personal situations to begin to define right versus wrong.
Another article that I researched on the topic of right versus wrong made a statement about the impacts of peoples choices that I believe ties directly in with defining right and wrong. The article stated that we should monitor the impacts of our choices and be aware of its actual effect versus its desired effect (Dolan, 2021). I believe that this can also play a huge role in defining right and wrong. If you make a decision in your personal or business life that may have had a negative and unintended effect, then doing the “right” thing would be to change your course of action to fix what may have been broken. Overall, right and wrong are sculpted by how society as a whole defines the two and accepts or denies certain things. A verse from the Bible states “so whoever knows the right thing to do and fails to do it, for him it is sin” (James 4:17, ESV). I believe that this verse is important because it explains how we should live as Christians, by doing what we know is right according to God’s word.

1) Consider the various examples of evidence that show the global climate is changing, and that humans (including their greenhouse emissions) are (at least partly) responsible for this change. The United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) issue reports detailing how climate change will affect people globally. What causes climate change? Define and explain the Greenhouse Effect. What are the consequences of climate change on the physical environment (i.e. weather, landscape) and humans from a global perspective in the long term especially with increased globalization?

2) Climate change, and the resulting rise in sea level, is likely to flood many parts of the world while generating weather extremes like extended droughts and heat waves in other places. How should the government prepare for these changes, and what kinds of climate change preparedness plans are already in place?

3) How do global trade and climate change affect each other? What are the socio-economic, political, environmental and demographic implications of industrialization and climate change, choose one of the following sectors to discuss (agriculture, transportation, energy and manufacturing)? How do these implications influence human activities?

4) Many of the world’s poorest nations contribute the least to the fossil fuel emissions deemed responsible for climate change, yet these places will bear most of the consequences due to their physical and societal vulnerabilities. Do nations whose emissions contribute the most to climate change have a moral responsibility to pay for the effects of those emissions? Explain your personal and societal ethical concerns. And if so, how would they pay, and who would determine the kinds of damages those nations should be responsible for?
