Breaching Assignment: In sociology, a breaching experiment is an experiment that seeks to examine people’s reactions to violations of commonly accepted social rules or norms. The original experiment was developed by sociologist Harold Garfinkel as a planned and deliberate break of a commonly accepted social norm. The researcher or the student, after performing the break, observes and records the reactions of the people who witnessed the break. The reaction to the breach is the crucial point of the experiment. If a breach is done correctly and the social norm is compromised, the reaction that people exhibit is the mechanism by which they try to make sense of the odd behavior or how they combat the behavior. Lighthearted breaches can induce laughter, confusion, and curiosity. More serious breaches can actually cause anxiety and anger. It is important to not confuse breaching experiments with crimes. Although they both work under the concept of breaking social norms, proper breaches are harmless and generally good-natured. They are commonly aimed at etiquette norms concerning how one should act in public. Rule of thumb, don’t do anything stupid.
For this assignment, you will perform a breaching experiment or set of breaching experiments. You are now able to go out in public and perform your breaches if you were so inclined. But please be considerate of other people who might wish to practice social distancing. If you do not want to do your breach in public with strangers… which in my opinion is the most fun, you can perform your breach(es) on those you live with (family, roommates, etc…). You will need to pay careful attention to how people act and react to your experiments. You will then write a 2.5 to 3 page double-spaced (11 or 12 point font) paper explaining what you did—what was the breach, when did you do it, where did you do it, and who was involved (friends, roommates, family); how it violates a social norm or norms; and what were the reactions you received. You will then critically analyze and describe why you think people reacted the way they did based on the readings and lectures and incorporating terms and concepts covered to connect to course material. This assignment will be submitted online through GeorgiaView.

What additional information should you obtain about the pain the patient is experiencing?
A 52-year-old male patient who is a house painter presents to the office reporting chronic fatigue and “mild” chest pain. When he is painting, chest pain is relieved after taking a break. He reports that the pain usually lasts 5 minutes or less and occasionally spreads to his left arm before subsiding. The patient was last seen 3 years ago by you, and you recommended diet changes to manage mild hyperlipidemia, but the patient has gained 30 pounds since that time. The patient’s medical history includes anxiety, vasectomy, cholecystectomy, and mild hyperlipidemia. The patient does not smoke or use other tobacco or nicotine products. The patient cares for his wife, who has multiple sclerosis and requires 24-hour care. His daughter and grandson also live with the patient. His daughter assists with the care of his wife, and his job is the major source of income for the family. The initial vital signs are: blood pressure 158/78, heart rate 87, respiratory rate 20, and body mass index 32. As part of the diagnostic work-up, an ECG, lipid levels, cardiac enzymes, and C-reactive protein (CRP) are ordered. The patient reports that he does not have time to “be sick” and says that he needs to take care of everything during this visit so he can return to work and care for his wife. Discuss the following:
What additional information should you obtain about the pain the patient is experiencing?
What additional physical assessment needs to be performed with this patient?
What considerations are important to remember if the patient’s CRP level is elevated?
What differential diagnoses should be considered for the patient?
What patient teaching will be incorporated into the visit to modify the patient’s risk factors?
How will you respond to the patient’s statement that he does not have time to “be sick” and needs to take care of everything during this visit?
