*this week, I want you to turn to scholarly literature and find some data methods used to combat one of your identified triggers/potential threats (OR ANTICIPATED TRIGGERS/THREATS), I want you to garner more studies on what is known about stress/risks/mental health and personal welfare in the first responder field.
You have latitude in choosing the topic of your choice (one that grabs your interest the most/one you want to empower yourself about). For some of you, this may mean reviewing the literature with a “broad brush” -so to speak. It may mean you need to research more broadly about personal well-fare, mental and physical threats. For others, you may know exactly what you want to begin to study. There are so many options. Make this project useful to you.
Here is what I want to facilitate for you this week.
1. Identify your topic
2. Use Hunter Library or Google Scholar to find empirical research (studies). Chose at least one related article and summarize what you learned from the research. On the Hunter Library Link you can select “peer-review” and full-text articles.
Here is a tip, you are paying for the use of access to journal articles via WCU Hunter Library, You may use Google Scholar and find a great article only to learn you have to pay for it. Start with Hunter Library; here is the link.
https://www.wcu.edu/hunter-library/index.aspx (Links to an external site.)
The above url is Hunter Library. It may take a little time in the learning curve, but it will be worth it.
3. Include your article with your submission.
4. Summarize the article within two pages (what did you learn, what is useful etc). Now, if you say nothing was useful, you did not “learn a thing”– then that is on you, right? You should have chosen a different article when you knew it was a dud! Avoid that situation, it will not result in high marks. you may have to read several to find a useful article.
5. Remember to write in third person, cite your sources using APA (intext citations and a reference page). Writing in the third person means eliminating “you” “I” “we” etc. I gave some of you a break who wrote what was considered a plagiarised paper, so if it happens this week it will result in a failing grade.
6. Have a good time learning!
Let me know if you have questions. Please do not wait until the last minute. That always shows.
Best,
Dr. Briggs
