2. REQUIREMENT:

b. Write an argumentative essay IAW ST 22-2 that takes a clear position answering the question in paragraph 1. Support the position with a persuasive argument. Apply sound reasoning and support the points with properly cited facts. Use the articles as reference, provided separately: “A New Generation of Unrestricted Warfare,” “Army Futures Command reflects on three years of modernization leadership,” and “Getting Gerasimov Right.” This assessment requires you to apply critical thinking skills and effective writing skills. Key elements will include an introductory paragraph, a main body, and a conclusion. The essay must include both citations and a bibliography. See ST 22-2 and use the Army writing style. If you find the three articles are not sufficient to support your argument for the C170A essay, you are permitted to use additional reliable sources for reference IAW ST 22-2, Appendix A.
c. It is helpful to review the C121 Critical Thinking, C171 Effective Writing, and C172 Writing Workshops lessons. To further assist in writing the essay, the C170 Argumentative Essay Development Student Guide is provided (separate file). While the Student Guide is not mandatory, it can provide help in writing the thesis statement, introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion. The Argument Analysis Checklist (AAC), covered in the C172 lesson, is another helpful tool when editing your written argument. The Student Guide and AAC are not required, but they are provided for your assistance if desired.

d. Upload the essay and a completed CGSC Form 1009W onto the Blackboard.
e. Double-space the essay with one-inch margins all around (top, bottom, left, and right) in Arial font, size 12-pitch. Indent new paragraphs five spaces. The essay should be three-to-five typed pages, approximately 750 – 1,250 words. The pages used for the cover page, end notes, and bibliography do not count as pages against the page limit of the essay. Do not exceed five pages for the essay itself. Footnotes at the bottom of the page do add to the pages of the essay, so use end notes instead of footnotes if needed to avoid exceeding the five-page limit.

INTRODUCTION (15 points):
Please include:
· A title page with a creative title: Be sure to include a stand-­‐alone cover page
· Your full name that matches the one on GS (This is important, especially for grading)
· Date
· Course/Quarter
Provide an introductory paragraph to catch the attention of the reader on behalf of your topic, then introduce your sub-topic. Introductory paragraphs often contain dramatic and general statements about the topic and why you chose your sub-topic. You can end your introduction leading into your thesis statement.

THESIS STATEMENT(15 points):
Every paper you write should have a main point, a main idea, or central message. The argument(s) you make in your paper should reflect this main idea. The sentence that captures your position on this main idea is what we call a thesis statement.
· Address a clear thesis that you will support in the following body paragraphs with factual information and/or research based evidence.
Example: For the topic of nutrition and subtopic of the ketogenic diet
The ketogenic diet can help some people lose weight and obtain healthier lifestyles.
TOPIC AND SUBTOPIC (20 points):
Instructions: Look at the syllabus and the chapter topics for each week; there are 11 topics total. Find a chapter topic that sparks your interest and then from that umbrella topic, pick a subtopic that you wish to elaborate on!
· Give a more in depth explanation of your topic/ Introduce sub-topic (sub-topic is the focal point of your paper)
· You may explain how the sub-topic relates to business, social, political or health trends by presenting facts that demonstrate the scope of depth of problem/sub-topic.

Example: Topic → subtopic; Nutrition → Ketogenic diet
→ Your subtopic of Nutrition could be the Ketogenic diet because it focuses on only intaking fats and little to no carbohydrates. You would then describe the benefits/consequences of this diet and how this relates to nutrition as a whole.

^^^^^These 3 sections should be brief/short compared to the section of body paragraphs, which should make up the bulk of your essay and where you will dive into the research!
BODY PARAGRAPHS (15 points):
Ideally, you would Include anywhere from 6-8 paragraphs that support your thesis (the amount of paragraphs can very, just make sure you do not have page-long paragraphs – these are too long)
Each paragraph should support and strengthen your argument – present and analyze the research!!
Back-up your thesis statement with relevant and factual statements preferably from sources no older than 3-5 years.
These paragraphs should thoroughly support your argument/thesis/research question.

COUNTER ARGUMENT (15 points):
Present 1-2 possible counter arguments that oppose your ideas/thesis. Explain why they are counter arguments and rebuttal them to demonstrate your idea as superior.
Providing a counter argument makes your argument STRONGER, as it gives you the chance to respond to your reader’s objections before they have finished reading. It also shows that you are a reasonable person who has considered both sides of the debate. Both of these make an essay more persuasive.
CONCLUSION (5 points):
Tie in your paper by summarizing your thesis. You can use your introduction as a guide. Be sure to include how your body paragraphs support your argument and briefly restate the counter argument. Conclude with an overarching statement as to why your subtopic and topic are important. Leave readers with something to think about!

BIBLIOGRAPHY (10 points):
· On a separate page, provide a list of references in the form of a bibliography. List references in APA format alphabetically by author’s last name.
Must have a minimum of 5 sources
Ideally, all sources should be written within the last 3-5 years
